Recent Advances in Evolutionary Computation for Combinatorial Optimization
The application of metaheuristics to combinatorial optimisation is an active field in which new theoretical developments, new algorithmic models, and new application areas are continuously emerging. This volume presents recent advances in the area of metaheuristic combinatorial optimisation, with a special focus on evolutionary computation methods. Moreover, it addresses local search methods and hybrid approaches. In this sense, the book includes cutting-edge theoretical, methodological, algorithmic and applied developments in the field, from respected experts and with a sound perspective.

Privacy in statistical databases is a discipline whose purpose is to provide - lutions to the con?ict between the increasing social, political and economical demand of accurate information, and the legal and ethical obligation to protect the privacy of the individuals and enterprises to which statistical data refer. Beyond law and ethics, there are also practical reasons for statistical agencies and data collectors to invest in this topic: if individual and corporate respondents feel their privacy guaranteed, they are likely to provide more accurate responses.

Problem Solving in Mathematics Education

Practice and Theory of Automated Timetabling V ; 5th International Conference, PATAT 2004, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, August 18-20, 2004, Revised Selected Papers
This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the Sixth Int- national Conference on the Practice and Theory of Automated Timetabling (PATAT) which was organized in Brno, Czech Republic, from August 30 to September 1 of 2006. The PATAT conferences, which are held every 2 years, bring together - searchers and practitioners from across the broad spectrum of inter-disciplinary research activity in search methodologies for automated timetable generation. This includes university timetabling, school timetabling, personnel rostering, transportation timetabling, sports scheduling. The programme of the 2006 c- ference featured 70 presentations which represented the state of the art in au- mated timetabling: there were four plenary papers, 17 full papers, 41 extended abstracts, and eight system demonstrations. After the conference, all authors were invited to submit their papers to a second round of rigorous refereeing for this volume of selected revised papers. We are pleased to have accepted 25 - pers for this volume. This ?gure represents the highest number of acceptances in a PATAT post-proceedings volume and is a testament to the high standards of the papers that were submitted. The organization of the book is structured around particular problem areas.
Planning Demand-Driven Disassembly for Remanufacturing
Ian M. Langella examines the planning of disassembly for remanufacturing of used products, yielding components which are reassembled into “as good as new” items. Through a thorough analysis of the underlying planning problem, fundamental insights are attained and heuristic solution methods are developed and tested. Although the heuristics exhibit good performance, they remain simple enough to be applied to industrial-sized problems. The author considers both settings where yields are deterministic and stochastic and where the amount of returned products is constrained.

Optimisation, Econometric and Financial Analysis
Advanced computational methods are often employed for the solution of modelling and decision-making problems. This book addresses issues associated with the interface of computing, optimisation, econometrics and financial modelling. Emphasis is given to computational optimisation methods and techniques. The first part of the book addresses optimisation problems and decision modelling, with special attention to applications of supply chain and worst-case modelling as well as advances in the methodological aspects of optimisation techniques. The second part of the book is devoted to optimisation heuristics, filtering, signal extraction and various time series models.
Operational Freight Carrier Planning : Basic Concepts, Optimization Models and Advanced Memetic Algorithms
Represents the compilation of several research approaches on opera tional freight carrier planning carried out at the Chair of Logistics, University of Bremen. It took nearly three years from the first ideas to the final version, now in your hands. During this time, several persons helped me all the time to keep on going and to re-start when I got stuck in a dead end or when I could not see the wood for the trees. I am deeply indebted to them for their encouragement and comments. Prof. Dr. Herbert Kopfer, holder of the Chair of Logistics, introduced me into the field of operational transport planning. Multiobjective Optimization : Interactive and Evolutionary Approaches
Multiobjective optimization deals with solving problems having not only one, but multiple, often conflicting, criteria. Such problems can arise in practically every field of science, engineering and business, and the need for efficient and reliable solution methods is increasing. The task is challenging due to the fact that, instead of a single optimal solution, multiobjective optimization results in a number of solutions with different trade-offs among criteria, also known as Pareto optimal or efficient solutions. Hence, a decision maker is needed to provide additional preference information and to identify the most satisfactory solution. Depending on the paradigm used, such information may be introduced before, during, or after the optimization process. Clearly, research and application in multiobjective optimization involve expertise in optimization as well as in decision support.
