Le complicazioni neurologiche in oncologia = Neurological complications in oncology
This volume, both necessary and new in the panorama of Italian medical literature, acknowledges this and presents an updated and complete review of the pathologies of the central and peripheral nervous system associated with tumors and their treatment. The purpose of the volume is to present an integrated approach between specialists that must see the neurologist and the oncologist in dialogue, and able to develop a new super-specialized clinical capacity in neuro-oncology. Many experts have contributed to its preparation by sharing knowledge on topics ranging from metastatic complications, to those of surgical cancer therapy, radio- and chemo-therapy, paraneoplastic syndromes, pain therapy, delirium and the affective alterations associated with the disease. The book is aimed in particular at neurologists, oncologists, palliative care practitioners and surgeons, but it is certainly useful for general practitioners and all operators who are daily involved in the demanding work of taking care of cancer patients.

Landscapes, Genomics and Transgenic Conifers
What is the future of genetically modified (or transgenic) conifer plantations? The content of this edited volume Landscapes, Genomics and Transgenic Conifers addresses this question directly - and indirectly - using language drawn from policy, forest history, genomics, metabolism, pollen dispersal and gene flow, landscape ecology, evolution, economics, technology transfer and regulatory oversight. Although the book takes its title from a Nicholas School Leadership forum held November 17-19, 2004 at Duke University, its de novo contents move past the forum’s deliberations. The result is a trans-disciplinary book composed of 14 chapters written by a total of 31 authors working in North America, South America, Europe and Africa.

Lake Taihu, China : Dynamics and Environmental Change
There are many shallow lakes in the world. Many of them play an important socio-economic role as contributors to the drinking water supply, in flood attenuation, fisheries and recreation activities. Because of the current anthropogenic changes in the environment, such lakes rapidly respond to eutrophication and swamping. It is often hard to address these issues because many changes in the ecosystems of shallow lakes are associated with little studied physical processes. This interaction between the aquatic biota and the physical and chemical environment increases the complexity of shallow lake ecosystems. Lake Taihu, located in the delta of Yangtze River, is a typical large, shallow eutrophic lake with area of 2338 km2 and maximum depth of less than 3m . This book provides basic data on various aspects of this lake and summarizes research work on the interaction between its ecology and physical limnology. It will be a reference for teachers and students of freshwater ecology and biology, the aquatic environment in general, and, most strikingly, for all those interested in physical limnology.

Multiple sclerosis is one of the most frequent causes of chronic disability in young adults. It mainly affects individuals between 20 and 50 years of age, with a peak of incidence around the age of 30. This disease is characterized by the presence of demyelinating lesions of an inflammatory nature disseminated in the central nervous system. The different localization of these lesions is at the basis of the variability of clinical symptoms which can be characterized by motor, sensory, neurovegetative and cognitive disorders. The latter concern about half of the patients affected by this pathology and have a significant impact on the personal, family and work situation of these patients.

Deals with restorative cosmetology. This is understood through the eyes of the doctor specializing in phytotherapy. Three main aspects are discussed: the diagnosis of disturbance of the skin and integuments, external treatment with natural substances, as well as oral treatment (internal treatment). Oral cosmetology has no official recognition, yet the effects of plant extracts on the condition of the skin and integuments are well known. After an introduction to the physiology of the skin, the dosage and the phenomena of skin deterioration, the author discusses different types of treatment depending on the extracts used while explaining their mode of action. This work was written by a doctor, Doctor Paul Goetz, teacher in clinical phytotherapy, and a pharmacist, Doctor Christian Busser, pharmaceutical and scientific advisor, doctor in ethnology and ethnopharmacologist.

Low back pain is one of the main reasons for consultation, whether in general or specialized medicine. It poses a real public health problem. This "back pain", which can despair patients and doctors by its sometimes rebellious character, explains the multiplicity of examinations sometimes practiced and the treatments implemented. This work is a collection of the most recent developments in terms of physiopathological knowledge of disc involvement, clinical examination and the place of surgery and in particular disc prostheses. An update concerns the indications and contributions of additional examinations; some formidable diagnostic traps are mentioned. Medical treatments such as infiltrations, manipulations, the benefit of restraints and the provision of acupuncture are being developed. Also discussed are the latest scientific data on isokinetic evaluation and retraining, as well as the role of sports activity as a factor in the prevention or aggravation of low back pain. Finally, the medico-legal aspect is dealt with in the context of work accidents, and the assessment after trauma. This book is the result of the collaboration and experience of undisputed specialists in this field.

More specialized aspects are discussed in a second part of the book concerning the future of medical treatment (biology, gene therapy) and certain complex problems of surgical techniques. The points of controversy concerning the total knee replacement are discussed in the last part of the book, of interest to physicians and surgeons.

The notable recent cognitive advances in the field of cytogenetics and molecular genetics have made it possible to identify chromosomal anomalies and gene mutations responsible for numerous male infertility, which were completely ignored until recently. The fact is not without relevance, if the principle is valid that the recognition of the causes of a disease is also the first and necessary approach towards its correct therapy. With this publication, the authors wanted to offer specialists working in the field of assisted reproduction an update on this complex subject, dealing with both genetic causes in male infertility and infertility in genetic diseases.
La disprassia in età evolutiva : Criteri di valutazione ed intervento = Dyspraxia in developmental age : Evaluation criteria and intervention
As clinical and rehabilitation practice shows, children with dyspraxia are unable to plan and organize an action plan; they cannot control what they are doing during an action; therefore, they cannot do something, but we could also admit that they cannot yet do something; that is, they have not yet learned to perform functions. Functions and actions, however, can be learned and performed with the help of targeted exercises performed consistently. It is, however, essential to recognize the difficulties children with dyspraxia face when faced with new, unusual tasks. The author proposes an assessment and intervention model that takes into account etiological and neuropsychological hypotheses, emphasizing the need to proceed with an analysis on multiple levels: perceptual, motor, and representational. Particular importance is given to early diagnosis and intervention to define and implement appropriate treatment plans. The work concludes with the analysis and description of clinical cases related to some specific forms of dyspraxia: verbal dyspraxia and dysgraphia.
L’esprit de l’aiguille : L’apport du Yi Jing à la pratique de l’acupuncture = The Spirit of the Needle: The contribution of the Yi Jing to the practice of acupuncture
Acupuncture deciphers and heals human beings in all their mutations. The symbolism of Yi Jing joins the humanism of this Traditional Medicine for a dynamic reading of the changes and transformations at work in human beings. The double reflection generates a global vision of the human being and the approach to patients is changed. After an approach to the state of mind, encountered in these two fields, the author sets out to find the oldest roots of the notions of Yin and Yang. This original book is intended for any practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine curious to broaden their field of investigation. Dr M. Vinogradoff has been practicing acupuncture for 25 years. He is a member of the French Acupuncture Association, the French Acupuncture College and the Ricci Institute. After having published the complete translation of Yi Jing, in 2006 he published a novel, the action of which is set in Ancient China.
Issues of Decapod Crustacean Biology
This volume presents the proceedings of the eighth Colloquium Crustacea Decapoda Mediterranea, which was held at the Ionian University on Corfu Island, Greece, from 2 to 6 September 2002, and reflects recent advancements in decapod crustacean research. The meeting is the oldest European carcinological event, organized regularly at 3-year intervals since 1972. Although focused on the Mediterranean Sea, worldwide contributions provided a forum for fruitful contact and scientific exchange.
