Subseafloor Biosphere Linked to Hydrothermal Systems : TAIGA Concept

This book is the comprehensive volume of the TAIGA (“a great river ” in Japanese) project. Supported by the Japanese government, the project examined the hypothesis that the subseafloor fluid advection system (subseafloor TAIGA) can be categorized into four types, TAIGAs of sulfur, hydrogen, carbon (methane), and iron, according to the most dominant reducing substance, and the chemolithoautotrophic bacteria/archaea that are inextricably associated with respective types of TAIGAs which are strongly affected by their geological background such as surrounding host rocks and tectonic settings. Sub-seafloor ecosystems are sustained by hydrothermal circulation or TAIGA that carry chemical energy to the chemosynthetic microbes living in an extreme environment.

Responsive Open Learning Environments : Outcomes of Research from the ROLE Project

This book presents the outcomes of four years of educational research in the EU-supported project called ROLE (Responsive Online Learning Environments). ROLE technology is centered around the concept of self-regulated learning that creates responsible learners, who are capable of critical thinking and able to plan their own learning processes. ROLE allows learners to independently search for appropriate learning resources and then reflect on their own learning process and progress. To accomplish this, ROLE´s main objective is to support the development of open personal learning environments (PLE's). ROLE provides a framework consisting of “enabler spaces” on the one hand and tools, content, and services on the other. Utilizing this framework, learners are invited to create their own controlled and preferred learning environments to trigger and motivate self-regulated learning.

Residual Stress and Its Effects on Fatigue and Fracture ; Proceedings of a Special Symposium held within the 16th European Conference of Fracture - ECF16, Alexandroupolis, Greece, 3-7 July, 2006

Simplified fracture mechanics based assessment methods are widely used by the industry to determine the structural integrity significance of postulated cracks, manufacturing flaws, service-induced cracking or suspected degradation of engineering components under normal and abnormal service loads. In many cases, welded joints are the regions most likely to contain original fabrication defects or cracks initiating and growing during service operation. Various procedures provide upper bound residual stress profiles for various classes of welded joints that can be used in fracture assessments, but these often give very conservative results. Recently, the option to use more realistic profiles has been adopted, but only where such profiles are based on finite element residual stress simulations supported by detailed residual stress measurements.

Recent Advances in Mechatronics

Reactive Flow, Diffusion and Transport ; From Experiments via Mathematical Modeling to Numerical Simulation and Optimization

The articles in this volume summarize the research results obtained in the former SFB 359 "Reactive Flow, Diffusion and Transport" which has been supported by the DFG over the period 1993-2004. The main subjects are physical-chemical processes sharing the difficulty of interacting diffusion, transport and reaction which cannot be considered separately. Typical examples are the chemical processes in flow reactors and in the catalytic combustion at surfaces. Further examples are models of star formation including diffusive mass transport, energy radiation and dust formation and the polluting transport in soil and waters. For these complex processes mathematical models are established and numerically simulated.

This paper reports on the experiences of integrating several Software Engineering techniques by the Rapid Prototyping group of Siemens Corporate Research. This experience was gained during our recent project that involved developing a web-based, workflow-driven information system. The techniques integrated for this project included agile and iterative processes, user centered design, requirements discovery and maturation, and test-driven development. These techniques were integrated and supported by a proprietary process entitled “Siemens Rapid Prototyping” (S-RaP), a software architecture, and project management techniques. This paper will detail the specific characteristics of S-RaP, the software architecture, and the project management techniques that supported the integration of the above listed software engineering techniques. We will also report on our experience with their effectiveness and our thoughts on future enhancements in all three areas
