Mathematical Methods for Robust and Nonlinear Control : EPSRC Summer School

The underlying theory on which much modern robust and nonlinear control is based can often be dif?cult for the student to grasp. In particular, the mathematical - pects can be problematic for students from a standard engineering background. The EPSRC sponsored Summer School which was held in Leicester in September 2006 attempted to “?ll the gap” in students’ appreciation the theory relevant to several important areas of control. This book is a collection of lecture notes which were p- sented at that workshop and consists of, broadly, two parts. The ?rst nine chapters are devoted to the theory behind several areas of robust and nonlinear control and are aimed at introducing fundamental concepts to the reader. The last six chapters contain detailed case studies which aim to demonstrate the use and effectiveness of these modern techniques in real engineering applications. It is hoped that this book will provide a useful introduction to many of the more common robust and nonlinear control techniques and serve as a valuable reference for the more adept practitioner.

Mathematical Events of the Twentieth Century

Russian mathematics (later Soviet mathematics, and Russian mathematics once again) occupies a special place in twentieth-century mathematics. In addition to its well-known achievements, Russian mathematics established a unique style of research based on the existence of prominent mathematical schools. These schools were headed by recognized leaders, who became famous due to their talents and outstanding contributions to science. The present collection is intended primarily to gather in one book the t- timonies of the participants in the development of mathematics over the past century. In their articles the authors have expressed their own points of view on the events that took place. The editors have not felt that they had a right to make any changes, other than stylistic ones, or to add any of their own commentary to the text. Naturally, the points of view of the authors should not be construed as those of the editors. The list of mathematicians invited to participate in the present edition was quite long.

Mathematical Epidemiology

Based on lecture notes of two summer schools with a mixed audience from mathematical sciences, epidemiology and public health, this volume offers a comprehensive introduction to basic ideas and techniques in modeling infectious diseases, for the comparison of strategies to plan for an anticipated epidemic or pandemic, and to deal with a disease outbreak in real time. It covers detailed case studies for diseases including pandemic influenza, West Nile virus, and childhood diseases. Models for other diseases including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, fox rabies, and sexually transmitted infections are included as applications. Its chapters are coherent and complementary independent units. In order to accustom students to look at the current literature and to experience different perspectives, no attempt has been made to achieve united writing style or unified notation.

“Materials for springs” is basically intended for engineers related to spring materials and technologies who graduated from metallurgical or mechanical engineering courses in technical high school, or in other higher engineering schools, as well as those who are related to the purchase or sales of spring materials. Lifelong Learning, Participation and Equity

In many countries, schools, universities and other traditional learning institutions are not providing for the educational needs of all members of the community. In many communities, particularly in regional, rural and disadvantaged areas, there are only limited options for people to undertake learning. Limited participation in learning has the danger of reinforcing people’s alienation from mainstream education and from participation and inclusion in social institutions and economic and community life more generally. This book addresses the challenge of identifying effective ways of accommodating the learning needs of all people and in so doing achieving the goals of lifelong learning for all.

Lifelong Learning : Interpretations of an Education Policy in Europe

In Europe, the idea of Lifelong Learning has developed from an education policy to the most important pedagogic paradigm. The concept was created as an answer to the international education crisis, diagnozed by Philip H. Coombs in 1967. Since the European Year of Lifelong Learning in 1996, it has been regarded as an alternative to deal with the rapid social, political and economic changes of the modern world. Andrea Óhidy shows the genesis of the concept and its development towards a pedagogic paradigm. Life Skills Education for Youth : Critical Perspectives

Lectures on Quantum Gravity

A primary goal was to foster interaction and communication between participants from different cultures, both in the layman’s sense of the term and in terms of approaches to quantum gravity. We hope that the links formed by students and the school will persist throughout their professional lives, continuing to promote interaction and the essential exchange of ideas that drives research forward. This volume contains improved and updated versions of the lectures given at the School. It has been prepared both as a reminder for the participants, and so that these pedagogical introductions can be made available to others who were unable to attend. Lectures on Probability Theory and Statistics : Ecole d'Eté de Probabilités de Saint-Flour XXXIII - 2003

Contains two of the three lectures that were given at the 33rd Probability Summer School in Saint-Flour (July 6-23, 2003). Amir Dembo’s course is devoted to recent studies of the fractal nature of random sets, focusing on some fine properties of the sample path of random walk and Brownian motion. In particular, the cover time for Markov chains, the dimension of discrete limsup random fractals, the multi-scale truncated second moment and the Ciesielski-Taylor identities are explored. Tadahisa Funaki’s course reviews recent developments of the mathematical theory on stochastic interface models, mostly on the so-called nabla varphi interface model. The results are formulated as classical limit theorems in probability theory, and the text serves with good applications of basic probability techniques.

Jets From Young Stars III : Numerical MHD and Instabilities

This volume contains the lecture notes of the Third JETSET School on Jets from Young Stars focussing on Numerical MHD and Instabilities. The introductory lectures presented here cover the basic concepts of the numerical methods for the integration of hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic equations and of the applications of these methods to the treatment of the instabilities relevant for the physics of stellar jets. The first part of the book contains an introduction to the finite difference and finite volume methods for computing the solutions of hyperbolic partial differential equations and a discussion of approximate Riemann solvers for both hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic problems. The second part is devoted to the discussion of some of the main instability processes that may take place in stellar jets, namely: the Kelvin-Helmholtz, the radiative shock, the pressure driven and the thermal instabilities.

Jacopo da Firenze’s Tractatus Algorismi and Early Italian Abbacus Culture

In the city republics of Renaissance Italy, it was a common practice among the merchant class to send sons for a two-year course of study at an "abbacus school", where they learned practical, mostly commercial mathematics, known as abbaco. From this school institution, several hundred manuscripts survive, all in Italian, often containing not only what the masters needed in their teaching but also algebra or other advanced mathematical material. A signal feature of the book by Jens Høyrup is the first translation of one of these abbacus manuscripts into English.
