Cardiovascular Regeneration Therapies Using Tissue Engineering Approaches
The cardiovascular system transports oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body; therefore, any impediment to this system through, for example, a circulatory disorder, represents a serious threat to organs, tissues, and cells. Obstructive diseases of vessels with a diameter of more than 1 mm can be treated by conventional surgical and interventional approaches; however, blockages in small vessels with a diameter of less than 1 mm cannot be treated by conventional methods. As a consequence, therapeutic ang- genesis and vasculogenesis for the treatment of ischemic diseases have been widely studied in the last decade. These methods may contribute to the re pair of intractable cardiovascular diseases with a main vascular involvement in the body's smallest vessels. In this book, Hikaru Matsuda and I have tried to summarize recent Japanese developments in the field of cardiovascular regeneration therapies using tissue engineering.

Breast MRI : Diagnosis and Intervention
This superbly illustrated practical guide is an excellent resource on all aspects of breast MRI for practicing radiologists, oncologists, and surgeons, as well as residents and fellows. Drs. Elizabeth Morris and Laura Liberman, two experts in the field from the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, have collaborated with colleagues from their institution and selected medical centers to share their expertise. Introductory chapters are devoted to diagnosis and cover the basics of performing breast MRI exams, setting up a breast MRI program, and understanding clinical indications. Additional chapters discuss breast interventional procedures including MRI-guided needle localization, MRI-guided biopsy, and percutaneous ablation of breast cancer; MRI of breast implants.
Biliary Lithiasis : Basic Science, Current Diagnosis and Management
The book provides an overview on biliary lithiasis and all its clinical pictures, twenty years after the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The gallbladder, the main bile duct and intra-hepatic stones, in their uncomplicated and complicated forms are illustrated.
Behavioral pharmacology of the cholinergic system
The molecular genetics of the cholinergic system including both muscarinic and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, cholinesterases, acetylcholine synthesis and release have provided significant insights into potential targeting for pharmacological intervention. Cholinergic drugs are being used or evaluated for the treatment of diseases. Thus, this volume aims to broaden our understanding of the current state of cholinergic mechanisms to enable implementation of novel approaches for the development of more effective treatments.
Behavioral interventions for prevention and control of sexually transmitted diseases
Before AIDS, the role of behavioral interventions in preventing transmission of sexually transmitted diseases was acknowledged in text books and journals but rarely promoted effectively in public health practice. Informed by a comprehensive knowledge of behavioral theory, intervention methods, and affected populations, the authors of this important book examine the central role of behavioral interventions in combating STDs. The book addresses the complexities and social contexts of human behaviors which spread STDs, the cultural barriers to STD education (ranging from conservative mores to "stay out of my bedroom" libertarianism), and the sociopolitical nuances surrounding treatment.
Auriculothérapie : Acupuncture auriculaire = Auriculotherapy : Auricular acupuncture
The auricle is a privileged place to observe and treat patients reflexively. It is endowed with both a particularly rich innervation, and brief connections with the higher nervous centers. It constitutes both a reading pavilion, to observe information coming from the organs and nerve endings of the skin, and a control pavilion to help correct abnormal information. It is a lookout post, placed bypassing the brainstem, on the path connecting the organs and the brain. It thus allows a fair control and an effective intervention. In this medical treatise on Auriculotherapy, historical and scientific data, medical explanations and bibliographical references are presented.
Auditory Trauma, Protection, and Repair
Protection and Repair presents recent developments in auditory research and their potential translation to the clinical setting. In particular the authors address the major entities of peripheral auditory trauma, discuss the underlying mechanisms, the central nervous system consequences, protective interventions and finally explore the possibilities to restore cochlear morphology and function. Two themes run through the chapters in this book: cellular homeostasis and cell death. In the broadest sense, all auditory pathologies are disorders of cellular homeostasis.
Antisense RNA Design, Delivery, and Analysis
This volume gathers a variety of models, delivery systems, and approaches that can be used to assess RNA technology for exploiting antisense as a therapeutic intervention. Beginning with a section on the design of antisense technology and their delivery, the book continues by covering model systems developed to evaluate efficacy, both in vivo and in vitro, as well as methods to evaluate preclinically the toxicity associated with these new potential drugs, and intellectual property considerations. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.
Antioxidants as nutraceuticals
Provides a comprehensive overview of antioxidants and nutraceuticals, including their sources, mechanisms of action, and health benefits, this new volume first covers the basics of the types of antioxidants as nutraceuticals, including the importance of phytochemical antioxidants and their nutritional and pharmacological intervention in the treatment of disease. It discusses the natural origins of antioxidants, classification, mechanisms of action, calculation of antioxidant potential of nutraceutical substances, safety, toxicity, and their significant involvement in the prevention of many degenerative and chronic diseases.
Anthropologies of Global Maternal and Reproductive Health : From Policy Spaces to Sites of Practice
This open access edited book brings together new research on the mechanisms by which maternal and reproductive health policies are formed and implemented in diverse locales around the world, from global policy spaces to sites of practice. The authors – both internationally respected anthropologists and new voices – demonstrate the value of ethnography and the utility of reproduction as a lens through which to generate rich insights into professionals’ and lay people’s intimate encounters with policy.
Anterior knee pain and patellar instability
This multidisciplinary book reviews the diagnosis and management of anterior knee pain and patellar instability in an eminently clinical and practical manner. The book reviews the therapeutic alternatives, both surgical and non-surgical, emphasizing the considerable importance of minimal intervention and non-surgical methods. Similarly, anterior knee pain following ACL reconstruction is covered in detail.

Liberal Democracy : Prosperity through Freedom
Aims to show which factors have been decisive in the rise of successful countries. Never before have so many people been so well off. However, prosperity is not a law of nature; it has to be worked for. A liberal economy stands at the forefront of this success – not as a political system, but as a set of economic rules promoting competition, which in turn leads to innovation, research and enormous productivity.
Community-oriented policing and technological innovations
Presents new approaches and innovative challenges to address bringing technology into community-oriented policing efforts. “Community-oriented policing” is an approach that encourages police to develop and maintain personal relationships with citizens and community organizations. By developing these partnerships, the goal is to enhance trust and legitimacy of police by the community (and vice versa), and focus on engaging the community crime prevention and detection efforts for sustainable, long-term crime reduction. The contributions to this volume emphasize how technological innovations can advance community-oriented policing goals.
