Stroke Prevention in Clinical Practice

Comprised of short chapters written in a succinct and bulleted style, with clear diagrams and figures to illustrate where appropriate, Stroke Prevention in Clinical Practice is ideal for the busy doctor looking for a comprehensive pocket-sized guide to the everyday management of transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs) and strokes. Strokes are the major cause of disability in the UK, and also the third biggest killer, but awareness and active intervention can prevent the dangers of strokes especially in high-risk groups. By starting with an explanation of TIAs, which so often preceed strokes, this work aims to make more physicians aware of the treatment regimens necessary to manage TIAs. It is vital to be aware of the early signs of TIAs, and be able to recognise them as soon as possible since a considerable amount of stroke prevention treatment stems from knowing the warning signs and taking action. This book discusses how to accurately diagnose the leading causes of strokes, and offers comprehensive treatment advice to avoid future recurrences, with all chapters written by leading experts in the field.

Spatial Cognition IV Reasoning, Action, Interaction ; International Spatial Cognition 2004, Frauenchiemsee, Germany, October 11-13, 2004, Revised Selected Papers

Dedicated to basic research in spatial cognition. Spatial cognition is a field that investigates the connection between the physical spatial world and the mental world. Philosophers and researchers have p- posed various views concerning the relation between the physical and the mental worlds: Plato considered pure concepts of thought as separate from their physical manifestations while Aristotle considered the physical and the mental realms as two aspects of the same substance. Descartes, a dualist, discussed the interaction between body and soul through an interface organ and thus introduced a functional view that presented a challenge for the natural sciences and the humanities. In modern psych- ogy, the relation between the physical and the cognitive space has been investigated using thorough experiments, and in artificial intelligence we have seen views as diverse as ‘problems can be solved on a representation of the world’ and ‘a representation of the world is not necessary.

Software Engineering Techniques Applied to Agricultural Systems : An Object-Oriented and UML Approach

The book is divided in two parts: The first part presents concepts of the object-oriented paradigm and the UML notation of these concepts, and the second part provides a number of examples of applications that use the material presented in the first part. The examples presented illustrate the techniques discussed, focusing on how to construct better models using objects and UML diagrams. More advanced concepts such as distributed systems and examples of how to build these systems are presented in the last chapter of the book. The book presents a step-by-step approach for modeling agricultural systems, starting with a conceptual diagram representing elements of the system and their relationships. Furthermore, diagrams such as sequential and collaboration diagrams are used to explain the dynamic and static aspects of the software system.

Software Engineering 2 : Specification of Systems and Languages

volume 2 covers the basic principles and techniques of specifying systems and languages. It deals with modelling the semiotics (pragmatics, semantics and syntax of systems and languages), modelling spatial and simple temporal phenomena, and such specialized topics as modularity (incl. UML class diagrams), Petri nets, live sequence charts, statecharts, and temporal logics, including the duration calculus. Finally, the book presents techniques for interpreter and compiler development of functional, imperative, modular and parallel programming languages.

Shear Localization in Granular Bodies with Micro-Polar Hypoplasticity

This book presents numerical simulations of shear localization in granular materials using a hypoplastic constitutive model enhanced by a characteristic length of the micro-structure in the form of a mean grain diameter. Due to the presence of the characteristic length, the boundary value problems are well-posed, the numerical results are mesh-independent (load-displacement diagrams, spacing and thickness of shear zones), and a deterministic size effect related to the ratio between a mean grain diameter and specimen size is captured.

Scenarios : Models, transformations and tools ; International Workshop, Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, September 7-12, 2003, Revised Selected Papers

Visual notations and languages continue to play a pivotal role ˆ in the design of complex software systems. In many cases visual notations are used to - scribe usage or interaction scenarios of software systems or their components. While representing scenarios using a visual notation is not the only possibility, a vast majority of scenario description languages is visual. Scenarios are used in telecommunications as Message Sequence Charts, in object-oriented system design as Sequence Diagrams, in reverse engineering as execution traces, and in requirements engineering as, for example, Use Case Maps or Life Sequence Charts. These techniques are used to capture requirements, to capture use cases in system documentation, to specify test cases, or to visualize runs of existing systems. They are often employed to represent concurrent systems that int- act via message passing or method invocation.

Quality Assurance for Chemistry and Environmental Science : Metrology from pH Measurement to Nuclear Waste Disposal

This book provides a basic overview over the relevant metrological concepts like traceability, ISO uncertainties or cause-and-effect diagrams. The applications described in great detail range from progression-of-error type evaluation of the measurement uncertainty budget to complex applications like pH measurement or speciation calculations for aqueous solutions. The consequences of a measurement uncertainty concept for chemical data are outlined for geochemical modeling applied to transport in the subsurface and to nuclear waste disposal. Special sections deal with the deficits of existing thermodynamic data for these applications and with the current position of chemical metrology in respect to other quality assurance measures, e.g. ISO 900x, GLP, European and U.S.-American standards.
