Symmetry Breaking ; 2nd ed.

Presents a more detailed and thorough discussion of the mechanism of symmetry breaking in classical field theory in relation with the Noether theorem. Moreover, the link between symmetry breaking without massless Goldstone bosons in Coulomb systems and in gauge theories is made more explicit in terms of the delocalized Coulomb dynamics. Furthermore, the chapter on the Higgs mechanism has been significantly expanded with a non-perturbative treatment of the Higgs phenomenon, at the basis of the standard model of particle physics, in the local and in the Coulomb gauges.

Survie des patients atteints de cancer en France = Survival of cancer patients in France

The Francim network brings together all the French cancer registries. It has set up an observatory for cancerous pathologies in France, the purpose of which is to provide the community with epidemiological indicators useful for the knowledge and management of this pathology, in conjunction with various institutional partners. A first output of this observatory was to provide estimates of the incidence of cancer in France in 2000. Its second output is reported in this work, and concerns the survival of cancer patients, as it could be estimated. from all cancer cases recorded from 1989 to 1997 in 20 French departmental registers. To achieve these objectives, the network joined forces with the biostatistics service of the civil hospices of Lyon, which provided statistical analysis of the data collected by the various registers. The procedures that have been put in place for the different phases of this work can be implemented on a regular basis, for subsequent estimates. They also lend themselves to the implementation of more in-depth studies that are necessary for certain cancers. These so-called “population” data usefully complement the results of studies carried out in the field of clinical research. An additional tool for epidemiological cancer surveillance is therefore now available in France, thanks to the support of the National Cancer League.

Supramolecular Structure and Function 9

Biophysics offers a rational language for discussion among scientists of different disciplines. This is the general philosophy behind the organization of the Summer Schools organized by Rudjer Boškovi ? Institute, Zagreb, Croatia and the Croatian Biophysical Society from 1981 on each third year. Internationally recognized and successfully established nine international summer schools have been organized under the title «Supramolecular Structure and Function».

Stem Cells : From Hydra to Man

“Stem Cells: From Hydra to Man” illustrates that there is more than human and mouse stem cells to learn from. Reflecting an enormous growth in the knowledge of stem cells in various organisms, the book presents the conceptual language and the nature of questions, as well as a summary of the advances in our understanding of stem cells from a comparative point of view that has resulted from the development of new technology and the development of novel model organisms over the past few decades. As such this book is largely a horizon analysis of a frontier rather than a retrospective. It presents an integrative approach to animal stem cells and covers the major contributions, tools and trends in a newly emerging field: comparative stem cell biology.

Ruggiero Boscovich’s Theory of Natural Philosophy : Points, Distances, Determinations

Drawing on published works, correspondence and manuscripts, this book offers the most comprehensive reconstruction of Boscovich’s theory within its historical context. It explains the genesis and theoretical as well as epistemological underpinnings in light of the Jesuit tradition to which Boscovich belonged, and contrasts his ideas with those of Newton, Leibniz, and their legacy. Finally, it debates crucial issues in early-modern physical science such as the concept of force, the particle-like structure of matter, the idea of material points and the notion of continuity, and shares novel insights on Boscovich’s alleged influence on later developments in physics.

Risk Assessment, Modeling and Decision Support : Strategic Directions

The papers in this volume integrate results from current research efforts in earthquake engineering with research from the larger risk assessment community. The authors include risk and hazard researchers from the major U.S. hazard and earthquake centers and some from abroad as well as programmers and analysts from leading insurance and risk assessment firms. The introductory chapter provides an historical overview of the rise of risk assessment in the U.S., with particular emphasis on the role of seismic risk assessment. Four key components of risk assessment and decision support software are analyzed in detail in the remaining papers: treatment of uncertainty, loss assessment, modeling of seismic mitigation strategies, and visualization of risk and uncertainty. The volume lays out a road map for future developments in risk modeling and decision support and positions earthquake engineering research within the family of risk analysis tools and techniques.

Ribosome biogenesis : Methods and protocols

This volume provides comprehensive reviews and describes the latest techniques to study eukaryotic ribosome biogenesis. For more than 50 years ribosomes are a major research topic. Our knowledge about ribosome biogenesis and function such as transcription, mRNA modification, and translation was the sine qua non for developing the powerful RNA-based vaccines against RNA-viruses causing the world-threatening Covid-19 pandemia. The chapters in this book are organized into six parts. Part One discusses a comparative survey about the unity and diversity of ribosome biogenesis in pro- and eukaryotic cells. Part Two deals with the genomic organization of eukaryotic rDNA and the role of RNA polymerase I in ribosomal RNA transcription. Part Three explores in vitro methods to study RNA polymerase I structure and its function, and Part Four analyzes the nucleo-cytoplasmic transport of assembled ribosomes and RNP complexes. Part Five covers modifications that increase the complexity of rRNAs, and Part Six provides readers with a review of eukaryotic translation and - for the first time - describes a new method to analyze translation in vitro.
