Bone disorders

• Bone is the specialized type of connective tissue that has extracellular matrix containing calcium salts. • As bone is a connective tissue, it consists of cells and matrix. • Mineralized extracellular matrix provides hardness to bones. • Bone is a living tissue that shows dynamic structural changes in response to physical stress and hormonal changes. • In addition to support and protection of vital organs, bones act as a storehouse for calcium and phosphates. • Bone also performs hematopoietic function (production of blood cells).

Bone augmentation in implant dentistry : A step-by-step guide to predictable alveolar ridge and sinus grafting

Implant dentistry has evolved tremendously over the past three decades and is rapidly progressing as new materials and protocols become available each year. With the number of advancements made in digitally based media and marketing, it is imperative that the clinician is able to separate new trends from evidence-based protocols to make sound and predictable choices for the ultimate benefit of patients. This textbook presents cases from the author's 35-year practice to show the successes and failures of various treatment approaches and protocols. Early chapters discuss the relevant biomaterials and instruments utilized for bone augmentation protocols, including barrier membranes, bone grafting materials, and growth factors. Surgical chapters dedicated to extraction socket management, alveolar ridge augmentation, and sinus grafting follow, each chapter detailing specific indications and patient selection criteria as well as step-by-step surgical procedures, aspects of postoperative treatment, and complications. The final chapter focuses on full-arch reconstruction using fully guided immediate reconstruction protocols. The author's teaching institute is credited with preparing some of the world's best clinicians, and this book will pave the way for countless more.

Bluetooth based indoor location positioning system for mobile robot navigation

Positioning objects has been an important topic since it’s needed to locate people, guide them to a certain place, and assist companies and organizations with their assets management. Great applicational opportunities emerge based on the inquiry of Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). In this research, a positioning system using Bluetooth RSSI is proposed for indoor applications. First, RSSI values are inquired multiple times and the average is taken at multiple points of different distances from the transmitters. Then the distance is determined by the variations of RSSI values respectively to distance variations. Finally, a triangulation algorithm is used to calculate the current location of the receiver.

Blind Speech Separation

This is the first book to provide a cutting edge reference to the fascinating topic of blind source separation (BSS) for convolved speech mixtures. Through contributions by the foremost experts on the subject, the book provides an up-to-date account of research findings, explains the underlying theory, and discusses potential applications. The individual chapters are designed to be tutorial in nature with specific emphasis on an in-depth treatment of state of the art techniques. Blind Speech Separation is divided into three parts:Part 1 presents overdetermined or critically determined BSS. Here the main technology is independent component analysis (ICA). ICA is a statistical method for extracting mutually independent sources from their mixtures. Part 2 addresses underdetermined BSS, where there are fewer microphones than source signals. Here, the sparseness of speech sources is very useful; we can utilize time-frequency diversity, where sources are active in different regions of the time-frequency plane.Part 3 presents monaural BSS where there is only one microphone. Here, we can separate a mixture by using the harmonicity and temporal structure of the sources. We can build a probabilistic framework by assuming a source model, and separate a mixture by maximizing the a posteriori probability of the sources.

Blind smart helmet

The Smart Helmet for the Blind is a project aimed at providing solutions for the challenges faced by blind individuals in their daily lives. The problem of detecting objects, identifying obstacles and distances, knowing the current location, and using a mobile application is a common issue for blind people. To address these problems, the Smart Helmet project was created, utilizing advanced technology and artificial intelligence to provide real-time assistance to the wearer. The helmet is connected to a Raspberry Pi 4, which processes information from the helmet's cameras and AI algorithms to analyze and predict the surrounding environment for a blind person.

Bipolar disorder

Mood" is defined as a ubiquitous and sustained feeling or emotion that dominates a person’s behavior and affects his perception. Mood disorders also known as affective disorders include unipolar and bipolar disorders. Manic-depressive disorder--more contemporarily identified as bipolar disorder (BD)--is a chronic and complex disorder of mood that is characterized by a combination of manic, hypomanic, and depressive episodes, with subsyndromal symptoms extant in between the mood episodes. It is one of the leading causes of worldwide disability and morbidity.

Bioterrorism and Infectious Agents : A New Dilemma for the 21st Century

Since the terrorist attack on the United States on September 11, 2001 and subsequent cases of anthrax in Florida and New York City, attention has been focused on the threat of b- logical warfare and bioterrorism. Biological warfare agents are de?ned as “living org- isms, whatever their nature, or infected material derived from them, which are used for h- tile purposes and intended to cause disease or death in man, animals and plants, and depend for their efforts on the ability to multiply in person, animal or plant attacked.” Biological warfare agents may be well suited for bioterrorism to create havoc and terror in a civilian population, because they are cheap and easy to obtain and dispense. Infectious or contagious diseases have played a major part in the history of warfare – deliberately or inadvertently – in restricting or assisting invading armies over the centuries. In 1346, the Tartars catapulted plaque-infected bodies into Kaffa in the Crimea to end a 3-year siege. Blankets contaminated with smallpox to infect North American Indians were used by British forces in the 18th century. More recently, the Japanese released ?eas infected with plaque in Chinese cities in the 1930s and 1940s. Biological research programs for both offensive and defensive strategies have been developed by the United States, Britain, the former Soviet Union, and Canada; several other nations are thought to have such programs.

Biotechnology for the Future

One area that has attracted much attention is the use of cell factories for the production of a wide range of chemicals. This area illustrates very well the definition of biochemical engineering , and it has therefore been chosen as the focus of this volume. The use of cell factories for production of chemicals dates back to the production of penicillin, ethanol, acetone–butanol, glycerol and further to enzymes and other antibiotics. All these products were traditionally produced by cell factories that naturally produce these compounds. With the introduction of genetic engineering it has,This volume therefore contains chapters on concepts of metabolic engineering on detailed modeling of cellular systems
