Mouse Models of Human Blood Cancers : Basic Research and Pre-clinical Applications

Although it remains an open question among some people whether mice and humans are similar in disease development, the laboratory mouse has emerged as the preeminent animal model for human diseases. This is underscored by the recently completed mouse and human genome projects, which have revealed that mice and humans share the vast majority of their genes, and thus get many of the same diseases, and for the same reasons. Emphasizing why mouse models are valuable in vivo systems for understanding disease mechanisms and developing therapeutic strategies for human blood cancers, "Mouse Models of Human Blood Cancers: Basic Research and Pre-clinical Applications," edited by Shaoguang Li, aims on presenting thorough analyses of the pathological features and the molecular bases of several major types of blood cancer and to describe translational research using mouse cancer models.

Motivic Homotopy Theory : Lectures at a Summer School in Nordfjordeid, Norway, August 2002

This book is based on lectures given at a summer school held in Nordfjordeid on the Norwegian west coast in August 2002. In the little town with the sp- tacular surroundings where Sophus Lie was born in 1842, the municipality, in collaboration with the mathematics departments at the universities, has established the “Sophus Lie conference center”. The purpose is to help or- nizing conferences and summer schools at a local boarding school during its summer vacation, and the algebraists and algebraic geometers in Norway had already organized such summer schools for a number of years. In 2002 a joint project with the algebraic topologists was proposed.

Motivational profiles in TIMSS mathematics : Exploring student clusters across aountries and time

This open access book presents a person-centered exploration of student profiles, using variables related to motivation to do school mathematics derived from the IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) data. Statistical cluster analysis is used to identify groups of students with similar motivational profiles, across grades and over time, for multiple participating countries. In this book, a person-centered analysis of distinct and meaningful motivational profiles and their differences on sociodemographic variables and mathematics performance broadens understanding about the role that motivation characteristics play in learning and achievement in mathematics.

Morphological Models of Random Structures

This book covers methods of Mathematical Morphology to model and simulate random sets and functions (scalar and multivariate). Monograph of the Urostyloidea (Ciliophora, Hypotricha)

This monograph is the second of a series treating the hypotrichs, a major part of the spirotrichous ciliates. The urostyloids are characterised by a zigzag-arrangement of the ventral cirri. Like the first part of the series, the Oxytrichidae, it summarises the morphological, morphogenetic, faunistic, and ecological data from the past 230 years, scattered in more than 1300 references from all over the world. Dichotomous keys lead to 36 genera and subgenera comprising 153 species illustrated by more than 2100 figures, including original ones. The treatise offers taxonomists, cell biologists, and ecologists a thorough and up-to-date revision because for each species a detailed list of synonyms, a discussion of the nomenclature and systematics, and an extensive description of the morphology and ecology, including almost all published faunistic records, are provided. With the monographs of the Urostyloidea and the Oxytrichidae the interested scientist can identify more than 320 species of hypotrichs, which are an important component of the eukaryotic microbial life in limnetic, marine, and terrestrial habitats.

Monetary Policy and the German Unemployment Problem in Macroeconomic Models : Theory and Evidence

Having the high unemployment in Germany in mind, this book discusses how macroeconomic theory has evolved over the past forty years. It shows that in recent years a convergence has taken place, with modern models embodying a Keynesian transmission mechanism, monetarist policy implication, and modeling techniques inspired by new classical economics and real business cycle theory. It also probes in which direction models may be extended from here. Empirically, the book uses different econometric techniques to investigate the relevance and implications of different macroeconomic theories for German data. A key question this book investigates is the role of demand and supply side conditions for the increase in the German unemployment rate. On a policy level, the book relates the implications of the different theories to the ongoing debate on the appropriate roles of demand and supply side policies for curing the German unemployment problem.

Molecular Pathology of Gynecologic Cancer

This book focuses on putting successful molecular strategies into practice for the treatment of gynecologic cancer. The volume begins with an explication of the editors’ hypothesis that cancer is mainly a disease of the cell cycle, based on the deregulation of the physiological process of cell reproduction. The following eleven chapters focus on specific issues in gynecologic cancers, including: a proposed model of ovarian serous carcinogenesis, molecular markers for ovarian epithelial cancer, an overview of the pathology of endometrial cancer, molecular genetic aspects of endometrial carcinoma and cervical cancer, a natural history of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) as it relates to cervical cancer, and hereditary issues in gynecologic cancers. The concluding chapter proposes and outlines a holistic approach to the treatment of female cancer patients.
