Primary Wood Processing : Principles and Practice

This book is primarily a general text covering the whole sweep of the forest industries. The over-riding emphasis is on a clear, simple interpretation of the underlying science, demonstrating how such principles apply to processing operations. The book starts by considering the broad question "what is wood?" by looking at the biology, chemistry and physics of wood structure (first 4 chapters). This sets the scene. Next key chapters examine "wood quality" – explaining how and why wood quality can be so variable and implications for processing. Finally, in a series of chapters, various "industrial processes" are reviewed and interpreted. The 2nd Edition is a total revision. A few chapters remain relatively unchanged (no change for the sake of change). Many have been totally rewritten. All chapters have been written by specialists, but the presentation targets a generalist audience.

Preventive and therapeutic role of vitamins as nutraceuticals

Provides informative coverage of recent breakthroughs in vitamins and their ability to prevent disease, manage health issues, and treat chronic illness. It describes the beneficial effects of vitamins as nutraceuticals in treating cancer, for improving the immunity of patients with HIV and AIDS, for the treatment of tuberculosis, and for the management of infectious diseases, such as viral infections, microbial infections, and COVID-19. The functional activity of vitamins in brain health and obesity management is also explored for the management, prevention, and delay of hypertension and related problems. The volume also covers vitamins that play a role in neurodegenerative diseases as well as those that can be used for weight loss and obesity, blindness and vision issues, baldness, and skincare issues.

Precoding Techniques for Digital Communication Systems

Provides a comprehensive review of precoding techniques for digital communications systems from a signal processing perspective. In the first part of the book the authors provide an overview of the principles of precoding for channels with intersymbol interference (ISI) such as Tomlinson-Harashima precoding and Trellis precoding. There is also a discussion on how the widely used OFDM systems can be treated as a special case of precoding techniques and introduce precoding schemes for OFDM systems. Further, the book provides an overview of various existing precoding techniques that reduce the interference level while keeping the receiver design simple in CDMA systems. There is also a complete chapter on the issue of precoding for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channels. The second part of the book introduces the state-of-the-art precoding techniques originating from several projects and research activities involving multiuser OFDM transmissions and ultra-wideband (UWB) radio systems.

Practical Problems in VLSI Physical Design Automation

Practical Problems in VLSI Physical Design Automation contains problems and solutions related to various well-known algorithms used in VLSI physical design automation. Dr. Lim believes that the best way to learn new algorithms is to walk through a small example by hand. This knowledge will greatly help understand, analyze, and improve some of the well-known algorithms. His vision in this book is to see the students realize that the learning curve is not so steep after all.

Poverty Reduction Policies and Practices in Developing Asia

Looks at the major policy challenges facing developing Asia and how the region sustains rapid economic growth to reduce multidimensional poverty through socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable measures. Asia is facing many challenges arising from population growth, rapid urbanization, provision of services, climate change and the need to redress declining growth after the global financial crisis. This book examines poverty and related issues and aims to advance the development of new tools and measurement of multidimensional poverty and poverty reduction policy analysis. The book covers a wide range of issues, including determinants and causes of poverty and its changes; consequences and impacts of poverty on human capital formation, growth and consumption; assessment of poverty strategies and policies; the role of government, NGOs and other institutions in poverty reduction; rural-urban migration and poverty; vulnerability to poverty; breakdown of poverty into chronic and transitory components; and a comparative study on poverty issues in Asia and other regions.

Pose based video retrieval

Pose estimation refers to computer vision techniques that detect human figures in images and video, so that one could determine, for example, where someone’s elbow, shoulder or foot show up in an image. Our application does not recognize who is in an image, it is simply estimating where key body joints are. We present a technique for estimating the spatial layout of humans in still images he position of the head, torso and arms. The theme we explore is that once a person is localized using an upper body detector, the search for their body parts can be considerably simplified using weak constraints on position and appearance arising from that detection. Our application is capable of estimating upper body pose in highly challenging uncontrolled images, without prior knowledge of background, clothing, lighting, or the location and scale of the person in the image. People are only required to be upright and seen from the front or the back (not side).

Polarization Mode Dispersion

This book contains a series of tutorial essays on polarization mode dispersion (PMD) by the leading experts in the field. It starts with an introductory review of the basic concepts and continues with more advanced topics, including a thorough review of PMD mitigation techniques. Topics covered include mathematical representation of PMD, how to properly model PMD in numerical simulations, how to accurately measure PMD and other related polarization effects, and how to infer fiber properties from polarization measurements. It includes discussions of other polarization effects such as polarization-dependent loss and the interaction of PMD with fiber nonlinearity. It additionally covers systems issues like the impact of PMD on wavelength division multiplexed systems. This book is intended for research scientists or engineers who wish to become familiar with PMD and its system impacts.
