Trees in Patagonia

This book is a guide to the native trees and approximately 95% of the introduced arboreal species of Argentine and Chilean Patagonia. Introductory chapters convey an overview on what is termed 'Patagonia', as well as on the geology, climate, soils, and vegetation of Southern South America. Keys based on vegetative characters and richly illustrated descriptions of more than 170 species form the core of the manual. These chapters are followed by concise entries on afforestations, urban trees, and plantations of fruit trees in climatic enclaves. Renowned experts describe the most important National Parks of both Argentine and Chilean Patagonia. The last chapter is devoted to Carl Skottsberg and his remarkable expedition through Patagonia a hundred years ago.

Tree Species Effects on Soils: Implications for Global Change; Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Trees and Soil Interactions, Implications to Global Climate Change, August 2004, Krasnoyarsk, Russia

Natural forests are expected to have high biodiversity, where the structural richness of the habitat enables complex relationships between fauna, flora, and microflora. They also provide refugia for rare plants and animals found only in natural forest types. Austria had 180 of these forest reserves up to the year 2003. Most of these forests are privately owned, and owners are compensated by the government for loss of income associated with conservation status. The Ministerial Conference for the Protection of Forest Ecosystems (MCPFE) has launched a world-wide network of protected forest areas which should cover all major forest types (MCPFE and UNECE/FAO, 2003). The sites selected for our investigation of soil conditions and communities were chosen by vegetation ecologists and soil scientists. The stands have developed under natural competition conditions with no management interventions. Our set of sites spans gradients of environmental conditions as well as species composition, providing a realistic evaluation of the interactions of biotic and abiotic factors.

Treatment of elbow lesions : New Aspects in Diagnosis and Surgical Techniques

The complexity of elbow anatomy and function often leads to an adverse response to traumatic and inflammatory conditions. For this reason, many standard orthopaedic texts advise caution regarding the surgical management of traumatic and degenerative lesions. The aim of this book is to didactically describe the different pathologies of the elbow and their surgical treatment, thus helping to reduce the incidence of complications such as stiff elbow, heterotypic bone and joint instability, and degenerative arthritis.

Treating Tumors that Move with Respiration

The first three sections address tumor motion due to respiration and tumor tracking techniques; dosimetry, radiobiology, and imaging; and fiducial placement systems. The fourth and fifth sections then discuss in depth the use of robotic radiosurgery to treat lung and abdominal tumors, respectively, and a final section explains emerging concepts and techniques. Within this framework, detailed information is provided on the technology and methodology for delivery of high doses of radiation to moving targets, radiobiological and radiological principles, and the challenges faced by clinicians performing extracranial stereotactic radiosurgery. Furthermore, there are thorough reviews of the general clinical literature on stereotactic radiation treatment of tumors of the lungs, liver, and pancreas, and the latest clinical data from clinicians conducting clinical studies using the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System.

Transmission Electron Microscopy : Physics of Image Formation

Transmission Electron Microscopy: Physics of Image Formation presents the theory of image and contrast formation, and the analytical modes in transmission electron microscopy. The principles of particle and wave optics of electrons are described. Electron-specimen interactions are discussed for evaluating the theory of scattering and phase contrast. Also discussed are the kinematical and dynamical theories of electron diffraction and their applications for crystal-structure analysis and imaging of lattices and their defects. X-ray microanalysis and electron energy-loss spectroscopy are treated as analytical methods. Specimen damage and contamination by electron irradiation limits the resolution for biological and some inorganic specimens.

Transgenic and Knockout Models of Neuropsychiatric Disorders

Neuroscientists are now establishing meaningful genotype-phenotype relationships for complex neurobehavioral and neuropsychiatric disorders and even creating animal models for these dysfunctions. These developments have made it imperative to know when such transgenic and knockout models are valid for the human disorders they represent. In Transgenic and Knockout Models of Neuropsychiatric Disorders, a panel of leading researchers comprehensively assesses how and whether the genetic abnormalities produced from these models manifest the neuropsychiatric disorders to which they correspond.

Transgenesis and the Management of Vector-Borne Disease

Parasitic, bacterial and viral agents continue to challenge the welfare of humans, livestock, wild life and plants worldwide. The public health impact and financial consequences of these diseases are particularly hard on the already overburdened economies of developing countries especially in the tropics. Many of these disease agents utilize insect hosts (vectors) to achieve their transmission to mammals. In the past, these diseases were largely controlled by insecticide-based vector reduction strategies. Now, many of these diseases have reemerged in the tropics, recolonizing their previous range, and expanding into new territories previously not considered to be endemic. Habitat change, irrigation practices, atmospheric and climate change, insecticide and drug resistance as well as increases in global tourism, human traffic and commercial activities, have driven the reemergence and spread of vector borne diseases. While these diseases can be controlled through interventions aimed at both their vertebrate and invertebrate hosts, no effective vaccines exist, and only limited therapeutic prospects are available for their control in mammalian hosts. Molecular technologies such as transgenesis, which is the subject of this book, stand to increase the toolbox and benefit disease management strategies.

Transforming Education Outcomes in Africa : Learning from Togo

Good education changes lives. It is therefore unsurprising that improved schooling plays a central part in most development strategies. At the same time, the expansion of school attainment alone is not sufficient to guarantee improved welfare. This book focuses on one country in West Africa, Togo, to explore what a country that has successfully increased enrollment rates can do to enhance learning outcomes. The authors explore different avenues for improvement, including enhancing the efficiency with which resources are used; increasing the qualifications of teachers; and through greater community involvement in school management. There is scope for improvement along all these dimensions, yet changes at the margin are insufficient to bring about the transformation needed to bring about acceptable levels of learning.

Transformations and Projections in Computer Graphics

Transformations and projections are used extensively in Computer Graphics, a field which is now a part of everyone’s lives via feature films, advertisements in the media, the screens of PDAs, mobile phones, and other vehicles and outlets. Transformations and Projections in Computer Graphics provides a thorough background in these two important topics in graphics. The book introduces perspective in an original way and discusses the mathematics of perspective in detail, yet in an accessible way. It also treats nonlinear projections in depth, including the popular fisheye, panorama, and map projections used by many professionals to enhance digital images. Only a basic knowledge of linear algebra, vectors, and matrices is required of readers, as key ideas are introduced slowly, examined and illustrated by figures and examples, and enforced through solved exercises.

Transformational Change for People and the Planet : Evaluating Environment and Development

This Open Access book deals with the pressing question of how to achieve transformational change that reconciles development with environmental sustainability. It particularly focuses on the role of evaluation in finding sustainable solutions. Environment and development are closely interlinked, as are human health and ecosystem health. The pandemic that began in 2020 demonstrated in no uncertain terms how destruction of habitats has allowed hitherto unknown pathogens spill over to humans wreaking havoc on people’s lives and livelihoods. We are already seeing the impacts of global climate change in terms of heatwaves, forest fires and increased storms.

Transendoscopic Ultrasound for Neurosurgery

Endoscopic neurosurgery has not yet reached the safety and applicability of microsurgery. Endo-neuro-sonography is a new technique aimed at making endoscopy safer by real-time imaging and navigation capacity (brain-radar). The endo-neurosonographic image is a sonographic scan at the tip of the endoscope (mini-CT) providing additional information to the endoscopic view. Endo-Neuro-Sonography is the first book on this new topic, presenting techniques and equipment, anatomical features, and the first clinical series. Schematic drawings, tables and 237 figures (122 in color) offer a precise overview of this technique. The final chapter is dealing with future concepts on minimally invasive neurosurgery and specific reference to ergonomics in neurosurgery.
