Uncertainty in the Electric Power Industry : Methods and Models for Decision Support

Examines the uncertainties power companies are facing and develops models to describe them – including an innovative approach combining fundamental and finance models for price modeling. The optimization of generation and trading portfolios under uncertainty is discussed with particular focus on CHP and is linked to risk management. Here the concept of integral earnings at risk is developed to provide a theoretically sound combination of value at risk and profit at risk approaches, adapted to real market structures and market liquidity. Also methods for supporting long-term investment decisions are presented: technology assessment based on experience curves and operation simulation for fuel cells and a real options approach with endogenous electricity prices.

The Management of Transshipment Terminals : Decision Support for Terminal Operations in Finished Vehicle Supply Chains

Multinational companies aim at strategic competitive advantages by distributing their activities around the globe. As a result, the in dividual supply chains become longer and more complex. Next to the supply chain reliability, companies try to keep supply chains cost effi cient and responsive, i.e. warrant short order fulfillment lead times (Siirie and Wagner, 2005). The above goals dictate low inventory levels at the stages of a supply chain as well as a high frequency of transports between the partners involved. Supply Chain Requirements. Detailed performance measures for a supply chain are provided by the Supply Chain Operations Refer ence (SCOR) model (Supply-Chain Council, 2002).

Strategic Supply Chain Management in Process Industries : An Application to Specialty Chemicals Production Network Design

More and more often practitioners in process industry have to adapt their global production networks to changes in the competitive environment. A majority of the supply network design models proposed by academia does not sufficiently capture the economic and technical questions that have to be resolved. This work seeks to provide the necessary operations research decision support tools. It builds on the example of specialty chemicals industry, which faces a strong increase of competitive pressure and historically grown production networks that typically lack a coherent design strategy. Decision makers have to define a global production network re-design strategy. Therefore, the book proposes a planning process split into the two phases: global production network optimization and individual site selection.

Risk Management : With Applications from the Offshore Petroleum Industry

Risk management is a process to assist in the decision-making. The risk management process takes the potential hazards as a starting point, in order to identify suitable arrangements and measures for accident prevention and emergency response in case of an incident. Risk management is a useful approach to satisfy functional regulatory requirements to safety. Technological developments, organisational changes and increased demand for efficiency have influenced the vulnerability of our society. Thus, safety and risk management is becoming an important field. Risk Management with Applications from the Offshore Petroleum Industry presents an in-depth discussion of some fundamental principles of risk management, related to the use of expected values, uncertainty handling and risk acceptance criteria.

Risk Assessment, Modeling and Decision Support : Strategic Directions

The papers in this volume integrate results from current research efforts in earthquake engineering with research from the larger risk assessment community. The authors include risk and hazard researchers from the major U.S. hazard and earthquake centers and some from abroad as well as programmers and analysts from leading insurance and risk assessment firms. The introductory chapter provides an historical overview of the rise of risk assessment in the U.S., with particular emphasis on the role of seismic risk assessment. Four key components of risk assessment and decision support software are analyzed in detail in the remaining papers: treatment of uncertainty, loss assessment, modeling of seismic mitigation strategies, and visualization of risk and uncertainty. The volume lays out a road map for future developments in risk modeling and decision support and positions earthquake engineering research within the family of risk analysis tools and techniques.

Principles of Electronic Prescribing

Electronic prescribing (EP) is a complex discipline, the success of which relies on the successful interplay of system design, data support and clinical practice. It represents the use of electronic systems to facilitate and enhance communication of a prescription or medicine order, and improves legibility and completeness of prescriptions, improves availability of electronic decision support tools at the point of prescribing, enables a comprehensive audit trail, and reduces medication-related errors. These benefits are far-reaching in significance, both in terms of their effects on risk management and risk reduction and their financial impact. Given the likely growth of interest in electronic medicines management, this discussion of relevant design issues and their impact is timely.
