HEXAVOID Parametric design and Fabrication workshop by MAGLAB

HEXAVOID Parametric design and Fabrication workshop 2017 "HEXAVOID" parametric strategies in Architecture – Materials and Fabrication Workshop. MORE THAN 65 WORKING HOURS / 23 AMAZING WORKHOLIC STUDENTS - 2800 folded unit. 45 Square Meter. Parametric design, Art and digital Fabrication Workshop “HEXAVOID 2017” In the intensive 7 days’ full time Workshop; we focused exclusively on introducing Morphogenesis, evolving strategies in architecture, Pattern finding and optimizing complex geometry in conjunction with economic efficiency, environmental impact. Participants experimented with new techniques, strategies using 3ds max and Rhino understanding of all stages from parametric design to digital manufacturing.

During the processes of the workshop, the participants started the experiments with 3dsmax, after they started to explore the capacity of the using different scripting strategies with 3ds max until they arrived to final design throughout many experiments and after many experimental prototypes and tests we decided to generate the final real scale installation by unfolding the final units using Rhino.

Within the studied evolving systems, whether Digital or physical, a base structural principle becomes the foundation for intelligent pattern generation. The result may not be read as typical or predictable, but offers an optimized solution capable of adaptation and growth.

Piece of art and architecture, rather than simply playing with digital tools or mimic the form of such systems, this approach to real scale fabrication uses foundational principles as a means of developing new, informed patterns of connection and territory. By establishing a set of foundational principles through digital mediums such as 3ds max and rhino scripting, the result is a capable design of reading and responding to the influence of relational fields between these forces, creating not a fixed form of art, but rather an adaptive, differentiated system.

Challenged by the time of the workshop (7 intensive days) and the number of the units, students worked for the final real scale installation, where real-life issues like project budget and team work and the advantage of using advanced design tools and strategies were tackled.

Impressive light 3D Projection Mapping created by the students Interstices in a synaptic space. By colorful lights and optical illusions and misleading sounds the audience and the jury board were carried away into an animated adventure.

Connecting logical and emotional, individuals and society, art and audience, proffessores and students, architecture and animation etc. We were aiming to draw from contemporary visionary art and architecture, sacred geometry, even physics and chemistry to turn the studied installation on the celling into a vibrant, endlessly beautiful scenery of our symbolic dialogue.

Integrating the celling's architectural characteristics into our artwork is also a key element in the concept adding an extra value to this conversation between artist, the professors, audience and students, the university and its students.
