This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the 46th International Conference on Objects, Components, Models and Patterns, TOOLS EUROPE 2008, held in Zurich, Switzerland, in June/July 2008.TOOLS played a major role in the spread of object-oriented and component technologies. It has now broadened its scope beyond the original topics of object technology and component-based development to encompass all modern, practical approaches to software development.
New Trends of Surgery for Cerebral Stroke and its Perioperative Management
In July 2004 specialists in neurosurgery, neuroradiology, neurology and neurointensive care discussed recent trends at the 2nd Swiss Japanese Joint Conference on Cerebral Stroke Surgery, held in Zurich, Switzerland. New concepts were worked out during the conference and are published in this volume. The book starts with the topic intracranial aneurysms, discussing microsurgical and endovascular treatment modalities, as well as new surgical approaches. Further chapters deal with the management of unruptured aneurysms and with subarachnoid hemorrhage. Practical guidelines for vasospasm treatment are given. Together with contributions about arteriovenous malformations and fistulas, cerebral revascularization techniques and surgery related to the intracranial venous system a comprehensive overview about stroke surgery is given with an interdisciplinary approach. The book will be of interest for all specialists involved in therapy of cerebrovascular disease.
Mathematical Survey Lectures 1943-2004
This collection traces the career of Beno Eckmann, whose work ranges across a broad spectrum of mathematical concepts from topology and differential geometry through homological algebra to group theory. One of our most influential living mathematicians, Eckmann has been associated for nearly his entire professional life with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH), as student, lecturer, professor, and professor emeritus.
Intrusion and Malware Detection and Vulnerability Assessment 2nd International Conference, DIMVA 2005, Vienna, Austria, July 7-8, 2005, Proceedings
Represents an increase of approximately 25% compared with the n- ber of submissions last year. All submissions were carefully reviewed by at least three Program Committee members or external experts according to the cri- ria of scienti?c novelty, importance to the ?eld, and technical quality. The ?nal selection took place at a meeting held on March 18, 2005, in Zurich, Switz- land. Fourteen full papers were selected for presentation and publication in the conference proceedings. In addition, three papers were selected for presentation in the industry track of the conference. The program featured both theoretical and practical research results, which were grouped into six sessions. Philip Att?eld from the Northwest Security Institute gave the opening keynote speech. The slides presented by the authors are available on the DIMVA 2005 Web site at http://www.dimva.org/dimva2005 We sincerely thank all those who submitted papers as well as the Program Committee members and the external reviewers for their valuable contributions.

The annual workshop on hybrid systems attracts researchers from academia and industry interested in modeling, analysis, and implemen- tion of dynamic and reactive systems involving both discrete and continuous - haviors. This year's HSCC was technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Control Systems Society. The program consisted of 3 invited talks and 40 regular papers selected from 91 regular submissions. The program covered topics such as tools for analysis and verification, control and optimization, modeling, engineering applications, and emerging directions in programming language support and implementation. We would like to thank the Program Committee members and reviewers for an excellent job of evaluating the submissions and participating in the online Program Committee discussions.
European Metropolitan Housing Markets
This book provides a comprehensive analysis of housing theory and policy with a focus on metropolitan regions. The results are based on case studies of twelve European metropolitan regions, including expert panels organized in each. Using an approach from the field of industrial economics, the analysis is divided into the three related stages "structure", "conduct" and "performance." The essential idea is that the structure of a market, defined by market conditions, market growth, forms of competition and control, influences the economic behavior of both companies and households. The effects of this behavior can be observed in the development of prices; exchanged, constructed and maintained housing quantities; location patterns and choice of space.

Building from waste : Recovered materials in architecture and construction
"Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover" is the sustainable guideline that has replaced the "Take, Make, Waste" attitude of the industrial age. Based on their background at the ETH Zurich and the Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore, the authors provide both a conceptual and practical look into materials and products which use waste as a renewable resource. It looks into innovative concepts of how materials usually regarded as waste can be processed into new construction elements. The products are organized along the manufacturing processes: densified, reconfigured, transformed, designed and cultivated materials.

This book contains the written contributions to the Third International Sym- sium on Biomedical Simulation (ISBMS), which was held in Zurich, Switzerland, on July 10-11, 2006. The manuscripts are organized around three thematic sections which cover several of the major aspects of our rapidly growing ?eld: anatomical modeling and tissue properties, simulation of biophysical processes, as well as systems and applications. The symposium provided an international forum for researchers interested in using biomedical simulation technology for the improvement of patient care. It was held in the spirit and continuation of the symposia on Surgical Simulation and Soft Tissue Modeling (IS4TM) organized in 2003 by INRIA, and on Medical Simulation (ISMS) in 2004 by CIMIT.
Beyond bending : Reimagining compression shells
The examination of old construction principles in combination with the development of new digital graphic construction methods leads to unusual ways in the design of self-supporting structures. Based on its Armadillo Vault, which was awarded at the Venice Biennale 2016, the Block Research Group of ETH Zurich describes development processes and visions of resource-saving, refined load-bearing structures without steel. The intensive examination of principles is fundamental.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Algorithms in Bioinformatics, WABI 2006, held in Zurich, Switzerland in September 2006 in the course of the ALGO 2006 conference meetings. The 36 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 100 submissions. All current issues of algorithms in bioinformatics are addressed, ranging from mathematical tools to experimental studies of approximation algorithms and reports on significant computational analyses. Numerous biological problems are dealt with, including genetic mapping, sequence alignment and sequence analysis, phylogeny, comparative genomics, and protein structure. For the first time also machine-learning approaches along with combinatorial optimization are covered.
