The utility maximization paradigm forms the basis of many economic, psychological, cognitive and behavioral models. Since it was first devised in the eighteenth century, numerous examples have revealed the deficiencies of the concept. This book makes a contribution to overcome those deficiencies by taking into account insensitivity of measurement threshold and context of choice. It covers classic theory as a special, context-free case and gives a systematic overview of new models of utility maximization within a context-dependent threshold as well as related preference and choice models. The second edition has been updated to include the most recent developments and a new chapter on classic and new results for infinite sets.

Revenue Management and Survival Analysis in the Automobile Industry

André Jerenz develops a price-based revenue management framework to support retailers in establishing better and more profitable pricing strategies, including assigning an initial asking price and the adjustment of price over time. For the profit maximization problem of a used car retailer, the author derives different algorithms for determining optimal strategies by applying stochastic control theory. Within the scope of the demand forecasting component, he proposes the adoption of survival analysis for estimating individual price response functions, modeled by parametric and semi-parametric survival functions. Thus, the effects of variables such as the asking price are taken into account. The evaluation of data from a case study in the German used car market reveals a significant potential for an increase in profitability and confirms the proposed price-based revenue management concept.

Pseudosolution of Linear Functional Equations : Parameters Estimation of Linear Functional Relationships

This book presents the author’s new method of two-stage maximization of likelihood function, which helps to solve a series of non-solving before the well-posed and ill-posed problems of pseudosolution computing systems of linear algebraic equations (or, in statistical terminology, parameters’ estimators of functional relationships) and linear integral equations in the presence of deterministic and random errors in the initial data. This book, for the first time, presents a solution of the problem of reciprocal influence of passive errors of regressors and of active errors of predictors by computing point estimators of functional relationships.

Classification and Modeling with Linguistic Information Granules : Advanced Approaches to Linguistic Data Mining

Many approaches have already been proposed for classification and modeling in the literature. These approaches are usually based on mathematical mod­ els. Computer systems can easily handle mathematical models even when they are complicated and nonlinear (e.g., neural networks). On the other hand, it is not always easy for human users to intuitively understand mathe­ matical models even when they are simple and linear. This is because human information processing is based mainly on linguistic knowledge while com­ puter systems are designed to handle symbolic and numerical information. A large part of our daily communication is based on words. We learn from various media such as books, newspapers, magazines, TV, and the Inter­ net through words. We also communicate with others through words. While words play a central role in human information processing, linguistic models are not often used in the fields of classification and modeling. If there is no goal other than the maximization of accuracy in classification and modeling, mathematical models may always be preferred to linguistic models. On the other hand, linguistic models may be chosen if emphasis is placed on interpretability.
