Vascular Surgery

Proper management of vascular diseases is dependent on public awareness and appropriate training of specialists. Tis stands true for every medical d- cipline. For vascular surgery it has an additional aspect because, besides the required above-average standard of technical dexterity, the vascular surgeon should also be well versed in a variety of subjects such as molecular biology, in the use of ultrasound and – with the introduction of endovascular techniques – a skilful operator of guidewires and laparoscopic instruments. All the ac- mulated know-how and skills required for proper management of the vascular patient demand a rapid change in the training of vascular surgeons and an - depth knowledge of the various manifestations of vascular diseases.

Vascular Interventional Radiology : Angioplasty, Stenting, Thrombolysis and Thrombectomy

Focusses on the current evidence surrounding the use of endovascular therapy. It updates and complements the earlier Medical Radiology volume on the Radiology of Peripheral Vascular Diseases. Some background information is provided on vascular biology and the facilities required for safe endovascular practice, along with guidance on consent issues. Further chapters deal with endovascular treatment in particular arterial territories, and include the evidence in favour of or against the use of specific treatments. The most up-to-date evidence surrounding endovascular aneurysm repair is discussed. There are also chapters on venous interventions, including the endovascular management of varicose veins. This book will be of value both to interventional radiologists and to vascular surgeons with an interest in endovascular techniques.

Vascular embolotherapy : A comprehensive approach ; Vol.2 : Oncology, trauma, gene therapy, vascular malformations, and neck

Endovascular embolization therapy has made remarkable progress during the past two decades, driven primarily by improvements in digital imaging, breakthroughs in microcatheter technology and coil design, and the development of new embolic materials. This is the second of two volumes that present the current state of the art in this exciting and growing field. Individual sections are devoted to vascular malformations, trauma and iatrogenic lesions, applications in oncology, indications in the head and neck region, gene therapy and pediatrics. High informational content is supplemented by detailed graphics, providing a comprehensive reference work for both experts and novices in the field.

Vascular embolotherapy : A comprehensive approach ; Vol.1 : General principles, chest, abdomen, and great vessels

Endovascular embolization therapy has made remarkable progress during the past two decades, driven primarily by improvements in digital imaging, breakthroughs in microcatheter technology and coil design, and the development of new embolic materials. This is the first of two volumes that present the current state of the art in this exciting and growing field. After an introductory section that discusses the general principles of embolization therapy, further sections are devoted to gastrointestinal, gynecological and obstetric, genitourinary, aortoiliac and bronchopulmonary applications. High informational content is supplemented by detailed graphics, providing a comprehensive reference work for both experts and novices in the field.

Thoracic Aortic Diseases

This book has been written in a clear scientific way summarising the current understanding of two major aortic complications: aneurysms and acute and chronic dissections. It is updated with the most recent basic clinical research, epidemiological findings, medical, surgical and endovascular therapies of the aorta.

Reconstructive Neurosurgery

International experts present in this volume advances in reconstructive neurosurgery focusing on the fields of neurotrauma and neurodegenerative disorders. The highlights include building an international strategy for risk reduction, documentating an multidisciplinary approach towards restoration of function in paraplegic spinal cord-injured patients, describing a new approach for statistical analysis in traumatic brain injury trials, describing blood flow changes in diffuse brain injury, discussing rehabilitation programs in Germany following acute brain injury, describing research data form Taiwan on neurotrauma, showing the neuropsychiatric effects from deep brain stimuation fro ovement disorders, difining the role played by imanging for deep brain stimulation targeting in mental illness, using radiosurgery in decompresssion in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, describing the development of radiosurgery from brain to the spine, listing new transgenic animal models of Parkinson's disease, discussing gene therapy for neuropathic pain and Parkinson's disease, and finally, discussing constrained-induced movement therapy fro stroke patients, and endovascular therapy for cerebrovenous disorders.

New Trends of Surgery for Cerebral Stroke and its Perioperative Management

In July 2004 specialists in neurosurgery, neuroradiology, neurology and neurointensive care discussed recent trends at the 2nd Swiss Japanese Joint Conference on Cerebral Stroke Surgery, held in Zurich, Switzerland. New concepts were worked out during the conference and are published in this volume. The book starts with the topic intracranial aneurysms, discussing microsurgical and endovascular treatment modalities, as well as new surgical approaches. Further chapters deal with the management of unruptured aneurysms and with subarachnoid hemorrhage. Practical guidelines for vasospasm treatment are given. Together with contributions about arteriovenous malformations and fistulas, cerebral revascularization techniques and surgery related to the intracranial venous system a comprehensive overview about stroke surgery is given with an interdisciplinary approach. The book will be of interest for all specialists involved in therapy of cerebrovascular disease.

Neurovascular Surgery : Surgical Approaches for Neurovascular Diseases

This book presents the diagnosis, investigation and treatment of neurovascular diseases, and offers expert opinions and advice on avoiding complications in neurovascular surgery. It also covers complication management and post-operative follow-up care. The book is divided in to three parts; the first part discusses common approaches in neurovascular surgery, describing the steps, indications for and limitations of the approach, as well as the associated complications and how to avoid them. The second part addresses surgical treatment based on pathology, taking the different locations of lesions into consideration. The third part focuses on the technological developments that support neurovascular surgery, which may not be available everywhere, but have been included to help vascular surgeon understand the principles.

Intracranial vascular malformations and aneurysms : From diagnostic work-up to endovascular therapy ; 1st ed.

This book describes the pathoanatomical, pathophysiological, and imaging features of vascular malformations and aneurysms of the brain and the modern, minimally invasive endovascular methods or techniques employed in their treatment. Individual chapters are devoted to venous malformations, capillary telangiectasias and cavernomas, pial arteriovenous malformations, dural arteriovenous malformations, and intracranial aneurysms. Each chapter is subdivided into four principal sections on pathology, clinical presentation, diagnostic imaging, and therapy, ensuring a standardized approach throughout. The book is richly illustrated with numerous informative CT, MR and DSA images.

Endovascular Aneurysm Repair : From Bench to Bed

Endovascular procedures have a tremendous impact upon modern patient care. This book summarizes covered stent-graft applications in the experimental and clinical settings. Excellent illustrations document the acute and chronic behavior of stent-grafts within the vascular system including diagnostic imaging, histologic work-up and schematic drawings. A large amount of experience on intravascular ultrasound-based repair of aortic pathologies is presented. Physicians interested in the endovascular field will find this book a very stimulating resource.

Advances and technical standards in neurosurgery : Vol. 32

This volume of Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery covers some important new developments in functional neurosurgery and endovascular therapy. In the Technical Standards section a variety of topics are considered, including optic pathway gliomas, pineal lesions, cavernous sinus meningiomas, and the eternal problem of minor and repetitive head injury. Endovascular treatment of a variety of lesions is now common practice, and the state of the art in endovascular treatment for acute ischemic stroke is reviewed. An appraisal of the evidence on whether there is a place for microsurgical vascular decompression for essential hypertension raises interesting questions.
