This book elucidates the correlation of fatigue crack growth data to multiscale cracking, particularly to the understanding of micrographs influenced by mechanical disturbance and thermodynamic variables. Attention is given to the interpretation of test data by fatigue crack growth rate using two empirical parameters in consistence with the fracture control methodology currently used by industry.
Modelling community structure in freshwater ecosystems

Maxillofacial Imaging
Demonstrates how advanced medical imaging techniques can be successfully applied to dental and maxillofacial conditions. There is a focus on CT and MRI, but the use of all contemporary imaging techniques are illustrated including PET, PET/CT, ultrasonography, and cone beam CT. Aims to outline the set of current international knowledge on disease awareness in various neuropsychiatric conditions (hemiplegia resulting from brain damage, psychosis, dementia and mood disorders), with particular reference to anosognosia and 'insight. The comparison between different conceptualizations and the variety of clinical manifestations gives rise to a very complex picture that requires a multidimensional approach, especially as regards the diagnostic moment. To this end, the authors propose an integration of various contributions on the pathogenetic level, based on neuroanatomical evidence and supported by the most recent neuroimaging techniques. In addition, the use of a complex diagnostic battery is suggested, capable of analyzing the different aspects of the phenomenon, and distinguishing it from the psychological defensive mechanism of denial. Research in this field is also essential to promote rehabilitation and compliance with treatment, as well as the enrichment of knowledge on the processes underlying consciousness and awareness in the human being.
Hormones and the brain

Hard Disk Drive Servo Systems
The second edition of this monograph provides a systematic treatment of the design of modern hard disk drive servo systems updated with the latest research results to reflect recent improvements in spindle speed and bit density and other changes in this fast-moving field. In particular, it focuses on the applications of some newly developed results in control theory, i.e., robust and perfect tracking control and composite non-linear feedback control which are suitable for track following and seeking respectively. Emphasis is placed on hard disk drive servo systems with single- or dual-stage actuation using a voice-coil-motor actuator enhanced in the latter case by the addition of a micro-actuator providing faster responses and therefore higher bandwidth in track following. Other issues such as modeling and compensation of nonlinearities and friction in microdrives, disturbance rejection and resonance compensation are also addressed.

The focus of this book is on filtering for linear processes, and its primary goal is to design filters from a class of linear stable unbiased filters that yield an estimation error with the lowest root-mean-square (RMS) norm. Various hierarchical classes of filtering problems are defined based on the availability of statistical knowledge regarding noise, disturbances, and other uncertainties. An important characteristic of the approach employed in this work for several aspects of filter analysis and design is structural in nature, revealing an inherent freedom to incorporate other classical secondary engineering constraints—such as placement of filter poles at desired locations—in filter design. Such a structural approach requires an understanding of powerful tools that then may be used in several engineering applications besides filtering.

Ecosystem Organization of a Complex Landscape : Long-Term Research in the Bornhöved Lake District, Germany
Presents the major findings of a 12-year ecological study of the Bornhöved Lake District, situated some 30 km south of Kiel. Historically speaking, the present research scheme, like comparable long-term ecosystem studies at Göttingen, Bayreuth, München, and Berchtesgaden, has been conceived as the core of a comprehensive ecological surveillance system for Germany (Ellenberg et al. 1978). Comprising three interrelated components, namely an ecological monitoring network, comparative ecosystem research, and an environmental specimen bank, this system is intended to promote both ecological science and planning and policy. In this connection the geo- and bioscientifically based ecosystem research aims at understanding the structure and functions of systems, the natural equilibrium and stress tolerance of singular components and the entire system against changes and disturbances from within and from outside, and the relationships between diversity, productivity, and stability. Thus, ecosystem research forms the indispensable basis for the rational analysis of the comprehensive data sets made available by ecological monitoring networks and for the adequate selection of plant, animal, and soil specimens for environmental specimen banking purposes.
