Young People's Views of Government, Peaceful Coexistence, and Diversity in Five Latin American Countries : IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study 2016 Latin American Report

Presents findings from the five Latin American countries that participated in the second cycle of the IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS 2016). ICCS 2016 investigated the ways in which a range of countries are preparing their young people to undertake their roles as citizens during the second decade of the 21st century. The study also responded to new challenges in civic and citizenship education, and its findings allow robust comparisons of lower-secondary students’ attitudes to and perceptions of a wide range of aspects related to civics and citizenship.The results presented in this report come mainly from data collected via a regional Latin American student questionnaire. Data from the international part of the study (test and questionnaire) were used to review the extent to which region-specific perceptions relate to other factors such as students’ level of civic knowledge and students’ socioeconomic and educational contexts.

Young People's Perceptions of Europe in a Time of Change : IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study 2016 European Report

The IEA’s International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) investigates the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens in a range of countries in the second decade of the 21st century. ICCS 2016 is the second cycle of a study initiated in 2009.This report from ICCS focuses on data collected in the 15 countries that participated in the study’s 2016 European regional questionnaire. It reveals lower secondary school students’ views on European identity, their perceptions of freedom of movement and immigration, and their opinions of Europe and its future.

Young Adults and Active Citizenship : Towards Social Inclusion through Adult Education

This book sheds light on a range of complex interdependencies between adult education, young adults in vulnerable situations and active citizenship. Adult education has been increasingly recognized as a means to engage and re-engage young adults and facilitate their life chances and social inclusion thus contributing to an active citizenship within their societal contexts. Why care for Nature? : In search of an ethical framework for environmental responsibility and education

this book, resulting from a comprehensive inquiry into the ethical and politico-philosophical dimensions of environmental education. Two sources of inspiration and responsibility are discussed in particular. First, as citizens of a civil society, inspiration stems from our commitment to the continuation of the collective practices in which we are already engaged. Second, inspiration emerges from our sensual-aesthetic acquaintanceship with the natural surroundings in the course of our everyday activities. This study concludes that there is insufficient room for these sources of inspiration and responsibility within the prevailing framework of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

The impact of leadership behavioral integrity and trust on the employees’ organizational trust : Empirical Evidence from the private health sector in Syria

Examines the effect of leader trust and leader behavioral integrity on the employee’s organization trust. Based on the assumption that there is a direct link between leader trust and leader behavioral integrity (Independent Variables), on organization trust (Dependent Variable), we have examined the relationship between these variables. The research methodology applies a deductive quantitative approach that collects quantifiable data by using survey instrument. Sampling strategy included interviewing employees across different hospitals which makes up 84.37% of the data, and from an online form that was shared on social media platforms making 15.62% of the data.

The German Chambers of Commerce and Industry : Self-governance, Service, the General Representation of Interests and the Dual System of Professional Education

Examines a particular factor in the enduring international success of German companies. Beyond industrial specialization, peaceful labor relations, local financial markets and the “miracle of the Mittelstand”, it focuses on a characteristic aspect of governance within the German economy: The Chambers of commerce and industry. Important characteristics of the Chamber system are emphasized - including obligatory membership for firms as well as participatory rules of their self-administration.

Teaching Tolerance in a Globalized World

Identifies factors and conditions that can help schools and education systems promote tolerance in a globalized world. The IEA’s International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS) is a comparative research program designed to investigate the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens, and provides a wealth of data permitting not only comparison between countries but also comparisons between schools within countries, and students within countries. Advanced analytical methods provide insights into relationships between students’ attitudes towards cultural diversity and the characteristics of the students themselves, their families, their teachers and school principals. The rich diversity of educational and cultural contexts in the 38 countries who participated in ICCS 2009 are also acknowledged and addressed.

Solidarity in Europe : Citizens' Responses in Times of Crisis

Provides evidence-based knowledge on European solidarity and citizen responses in times of crisis. Does the crisis of European integration translate into a crisis of European solidarity, and if yes, what are the manifestations at the level of individual citizens? How strongly is solidarity rooted at the individual level, both in terms of attitudes and practices? And which driving factors and mechanisms contribute to the reproduction and/or corrosion of solidarity in times of crisis? Using findings from the EU Horizon 2020 funded research project “European paths to transnational solidarity at times of crisis: Conditions, forms, role-models and policy responses” (TransSOL), the books addresses these questions and provides cross-national comparisons of eight European countries – Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, and the UK. It will appeal to students, scholars and policymakers interested in the Eurocrisis, politics and sociology.

Self-Employment Activities of Women and Minorities : Their Success or Failure in Relation to Social Citizenship Policies

The discussion on new forms of non-privileged self-employment of women and minorities is usually divided into separate discourses on women’s opportunities on the one hand and ethnic business on the other. The focus in the discussion about the special resources of migrant entrepreneurship has been above all on the assumed collective traditions of ethnic business and not on the individual emancipative resources of the self-employed. This book has brought the two discourses together. While women and migrants are most vulnerable to social exclusion on the labour market, at the same time they are subjects of unrecognized resources for self-employment that have to be taken into account under the special conditions of social citizenship policies in the European Union.

Pufendorf's international political and legal thought

Analyses Samuel Pufendorf's understanding of the international legal order and how it was shaped by his reflections on topics that are conventionally distinguished from international law in academic study, namely religious toleration and theology. The first and second sections examine the post-Westphalian system in the Holy Roman Empire and the importance of keeping the promises made between states. The third section takes up the theological dimension of Pufendorf's thinking in Jus feciale divinum (1695) and the covenant or federal theology it involves. Parallels are consequently drawn between Pufendorf's arguments on covenants with treaties in international law. The concluding section studies these aspects in further detail and shows the extent to which Pufendorf's conception of international law reflects the pattern of his theology

Performing Citizenship : Bodies, Agencies, Limitations

Neo-Liberalism, State Power and Global Governance

Part One explores the pattern of national differences in the exercise of state power in a variety of industrialized and developing economies, despite the pressure to converge towards the dominant neo-liberal paradigm. Part Two analyses a variety of trans-national policy prescriptions for neo-liberalism and state power. Part Three explores whether the governance of labour markets is a special case in the global economy. Part Four sets out the need for institutional reform of the neo-liberal order in trade and finance. The volume concludes that there is the prospect of a more plural approach to state power and global governance, and one that recognizes the importance of the public domain of citizenship for delivering the global public goods of security, prosperity and environmental sustainability in the twenty-first century.
