VizSEC 2007 ; Proceedings of the Workshop on Visualization for Computer Security

Networked computers are ubiquitous, and are subject to attack, misuse, and abuse. One method to counteracting this cyber threat is to provide security analysts with better tools to discover patterns, detect anomalies, identify correlations, and communicate their findings. Visualization for computer security (VizSec) researchers and developers are doing just that. VizSec is about putting robust information visualization tools into the hands of human analysts to take advantage of the power of the human perceptual and cognitive processes in solving computer security problems.

Unique Environmentalism : A Comparative Perspective

This book explains and demonstrates how the Norwegian case of environmentalism is unique. The two connected anomalies of an inclusive and state friendly society and a strong orientation and commitment to local communities make the case stand apart from mainstream international definitions of environmentalism. The authors study a specific political culture with a rather unique combination of state structure and civil society of which organized environmentalism is an important part. The political culture influences organizational form and organizational ideology as well as the way these organistions are linked to and interact with the goverment.

Thermal Decomposition of Solids and Melts : New Thermochemical Approach to the Mechanism, Kinetics and Methodology

Thermal Decomposition of Solids and Melts describes the results of investigations into the mechanisms and kinetics involved in the thermal decomposition of solid and liquid substances via thermochemical analysis (TA). The main features of these thermal decomposition reactions are explained within and the observed anomalies are interpreted. New methods of TA measurement and calculation have been developed, which permit the precision and accuracy of determination of kinetic parameters to be increased substantially. Reliable kinetic characteristics have been obtained and the decomposition mechanisms for several substances have been interpreted.

The Physics of Structural Phase Transitions

This book is divided into two parts. The first part includes such topics as the Landau theory of phase transitions, statistics, correlations, and the mean-field approximation, pseudospins and their collective motion, soft lattice modes, condensates and their nonlinear growth, and lattice imperfections and their role in phase transitions of real crystals. The second part discusses experimental studies of modulated crystals using X-ray diffraction, neutron inelastic scattering, light scattering, dielectric measurements, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. While the presence of modulated structures in the critical region is not particularly suggested in the published results of these studies, it is notable that most observed anomalies indicate evidence for pinned pseudospin condensates.

The Molecular Mechanisms of Axenfeld-Rieger Syndrome

Annotation The Molecular Mechanisms of Axenfeld-Rieger Syndrome describes the current research and clinical findings of the heterogeneous disorder termed Axenfeld-Rieger Syndrome (ARS). The book provides an in-depth analysis of this phenotypic diverse disorder and is designed to detail the current molecular and biochemical research involved in studying genetic defects. This book brings together the complete analysis of a human genetic defect using humans, mouse and chick epigenetic and genetic studies, combined with cell culture and in vitro analyses. It is a comprehensive study of a unique set of genes and their mutant activities. A molecular basis for the genetic and phenotypic anomalies observed in ARS patients is provided, with especially detailed descriptions of eye, tooth, and heart development.

Sustainable Living with Environmental Risks

Modern economic development has accelerated environmental pollution, caused loss of natural habitats, and modified landscapes. These environmental changes have impacted natural systems: water and heat circulation, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity. These changes in natural systems degrade ecosystem services and subsequently increase environmental risks for humans. Environmental risks, therefore, are not only human health risks by pollution, climatic anomalies, and natural disasters, but also degradation of ecosystem services on which most people are relying for their lives. We cannot entirely eliminate the risks, because it is not possible to attain zero impact on the environment, but we need to find a mechanism that minimizes environmental risks for human sustainably. This is the idea of the interdisciplinary framework of “environmental risk management” theory, which advocates harmony between economic development and environmental conservation.

Stock Market Anomalies : The Latin American Evidence

Interest in the Latin American emerging markets (LAEM) has increased considerably in recent years. It is often claimed that they have to pay a price for being too different from developed markets, i.e. for having weak institutions, failed macroeconomic programs, political instability. The book explores three sets of questions : What are the investment laws in the LAEM and how do they compare to those of developed countries? / How heterogeneous are the implicit trading costs in the LAEM and which factors are responsible for the heterogeneity?/ How does the predictability of stock returns in the LAEM differ from those documented for developed markets?

Pediatric Uroradiology

Describes in detail all aspects of pediatric uroradiology. While it is written primarily from the point of view of the radiologist, it includes essential information for the pediatrician, pediatric surgeon, and urologist. It is specifically designed to aid the clinician in decisions on imaging management. The newest techniques and the changing relevance of imaging and interventional procedures are presented, and the diverse problems associated with the changing anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology from the newborn period to adulthood are explained. The whole spectrum of imaging features of agenesis, anomalies, dysplasia, parenchymal diseases, neoplastic diseases, stone disease, renal vascular hypertension, renal failure, renal transplantation, and genitourinary trauma is covered. Individual chapters are devoted to vesicoureteric reflux, urinary tract infection, upper urinary tract dilatation, voiding dysfunction, and neurogenic bladder.

Pediatric Dentistry

Provides dental practitioners and students with all the knowledge required in order to treat optimally the oral conditions encountered in children and adolescents and to offer appropriate guidance on subsequent oral health self-care. The use of sedation and anesthesia is then discussed, followed by detailed information on such key topics as tooth eruption and shedding, preventive and interceptive orthodontics, and control of dental caries. Restoration procedures and pulp treatment necessitated by dental caries, trauma and/or developmental anomalies are clearly described, with reference to relevant advances in dental technology and materials. Subsequent chapters focus on conditions compromising dental or general oral health in the pediatric age group, such as periodontal diseases, dental wear, dental anomalies, TMJ disorders, and soft tissue lesions.

Neonatal Cranial Ultrasonography

It provides important information on brain maturation in the (preterm) neonate and enables the detection of frequently occurring brain anomalies in both preterm and full term neonates. Furthermore, it can be repeated as often as is necessary. In this edition of Neonatal Cranial Ultrasonography, the focus is on the basics of the technique, from patient preparation through to screening strategies and the classification of abnormalities. Many new ultrasound images have been included to reflect the improvements in image quality since the first edition. Essential information is provided about both the procedure itself and the normal ultrasound anatomy. Standard technique using the anterior fontanelle as the acoustic window is described and illustrated, but emphasis is also placed on the value of supplementary acoustic windows.
