The Once-Only Principle : The TOOP Project

This Book State-of-the-Art Survey describes and documents the developments and results of the Once-Only Principle Project (TOOP). The Once-Only Principle (OOP) is part of the seven underlying principles of the eGovernment Action Plan 2016-2020. It aims to make the government more effective and to reduce administrative burdens by asking citizens and companies to provide certain standard information to the public authorities only once. The project was horizontal and policy-driven with the aim of showing that the implementation of OOP in a cross-border and cross-sector setting is feasible. The book summarizes the results of the project from policy, organizational, architectural, and technical points of view. This book has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 737460

The Next Wave in Computing, Optimization, and Decision Technologies

The first section contains two papers on network models. The second section focuses in integer and mixed integer programming. The third section contains papers in which heuristic search and metaheuristics are applied. Three papers using stochastic modeling comprise the fourth section. In the fifth section, the unifying theme is software and modeling. The sixth section contains four papers on classification, clustering, and ranking. Each article in the volume has been carefully reviewed and revised accordingly. Computer Science and Operations Research continue to have a synergistic relationship and this book represents the results of the cross-fertilization between OR/MS and CS/AI. It is this interface of OR/CS that makes possible advances that could not have been achieved in isolation. Taken collectively, these articles are indicative of the state-of-the-art in the interface between OR/MS and CS/AI and of the high-caliber research being conducted by members of the INFORMS Computing Society.

The Missing Links in Teacher Education Design : Developing a Multi-linked Conceptual Framework

This ground-breaking, internationally oriented book brings together a number of excellent contributions on new directions in the design of teacher education programs. Moreover, the ideas are connected through a clear and stimulating conceptual framework that has the potential to guide effective innovation in the field.Teacher education program design demands a conceptualization built on strong interlinked foundations so that coursework and practice complement each another as a dynamic whole. Hoban offers an outstanding explication of exactly that through his Missing Links in Teacher Education. In so doing he offers a way of enhancing the quality of teacher education programs for those scholars passionate about, and committed to the work of teaching and learning about teaching.

The Method of Intrinsic Scaling : A Systematic Approach to Regularity for Degenerate and Singular PDEs

This set of lectures, which had its origin in a mini course delivered at the Summer Program of IMPA (Rio de Janeiro), is an introduction to intrinsic scaling, a powerful method in the analysis of degenerate and singular PDEs. In the first part, the theory is presented from scratch for the model case of the degenerate p-Laplace equation. This approach brings to light what is really essential in the method, leaving aside technical refinements needed to deal with more general equations, and is entirely self-contained. The second part deals with three applications of the theory to relevant models arising from flows in porous media and phase transitions. The aim is to convince the reader of the strength of the method as a systematic approach to regularity for this important class of equations.

The Mediterranean Sea

This volume deals with several aspects of the chemical contamination of the Mediterranean Sea and its health. After a description of the general physical and socio-economic context, exploration of processes governing the fate of chemicals, the budget of both inorganic and organic major and preoccupant contaminants and a description of new tools to study the impact of pollution on the Mediterranean Sea are discussed. The book serves as a reference source for the chemical aspects of the Mediterranean Sea for students and scientists and a practical guide for those who have professional responsibility for the management and operation of environmental impact assessment programmes.

The Mathematica GuideBook for Symbolics

"The Mathematica GuideBook for Symbolics"deals with Mathematica's symbolic mathematical capabilities. Structural and mathematical operations on single and systems of polynomials are fundamental to many symbolic calculations and they are covered in considerable detail. The solution of equations and differential equations, as well as the classical calculus operations (differentiation, integration, summation, series expansion, limits) are exhaustively treated.

The Mathematica GuideBook for Numerics

Mathematica is today's most advanced technical computing system, featuring a rich programming environment, two-and three-dimensional graphics capabilities and hundreds of sophisticated, powerful programming and mathematical functions using state-of-the-art algorithms. Combined with a user-friendly interface and a complete mathematical typesetting system, Mathematica offers an intuitive, easy-to-handle environment of great power and utility. The available types of arithmetic (machine, high-precision, and interval) are introduced, discussed, and put to use. Fundamental numerical operations, such as compiling programs, fast Fourier transforms, minimization, numerical solution of equations, ordinary/partial differential equations are analyzed in detail and are applied to a large number of examples in the main text and solutions to the exercises.

The Magnetospheric Cusps : Structure and Dynamics

This collection of papers will address the question "What is the Magnetospheric Cusp?" and what is its role in the coupling of the solar wind to the magnetosphere as well as its role in the processes of particle transport and energization within the magnetosphere. The cusps have traditionally been described as narrow funnel-shaped regions that provide a focus of the Chapman-Ferraro currents that flow on the magnetopause, a boundary between the cavity dominated by the geomagnetic field (i.e., the magnetosphere) and the external region of the interplanetary medium. Measurements from a number of recent satellite programs have shown that the cusp is not confined to a narrow region near local noon but appears to encompass a large portion of the dayside high-latitude magnetosphere and it appears that the cusp is a major source region for the production of energetic charged particles for the magnetosphere.

The Longleaf Pine Ecosystem : Ecology, Silviculture, and Restoration

The longleaf pine ecosystem, once one of the most extensive ecosystems in North America, is now among the most threatened. Over the past few centuries, land clearing, logging, fire suppression, and the encroachment of more aggressive plants have led to an overwhelming decrease in the ecosystem’s size, to approximately 2.2% of its original coverage. Despite this devastation, the range of the longleaf still extends from Virginia to Texas. Through the combined efforts of organizations such as the USDA Forest Service, the Longleaf Alliance, and the Nature Conservancy, extensive programs to conserve, restore, and manage the ecosystem are currently underway.

The Immune Synapse as a Novel Target for Therapy

The immune synapse can be compared to a molecular machine that controls T cell activation when getting in contact with an antigen-presenting cell (APC). The immune synapse is involved in the transfer of information across the T cell–APC junction. It plays an essential role in the control and nature of the immune response. In recent years several approaches have been developed to reprogram the immune response by targeting molecules involved in the immune synapse. Monoclonal antibodies, such as those targeting the lymphocyte co-receptor, costimulatory and adhesion molecules (CD3, CD4, CD40L, CTLA4-Ig, LFA-1), or altered peptide ligands have been shown capable of inducing immune tolerance in transplantation, autoimmunity and allergy. This volume discusses the progress in the field, from basic science to clinical trials, and the major mechanisms involved. It is of interest to clinicians and researchers working in this area.
