Telecommunications Planning : Innovations in Pricing, Network Design and Management

Focuses on the latest methodological developments in three key areas---pricing of telecommunications services, network design, and resource allocation. These three elements are most relevant to current telecommunications planning. The first five chapters cover global deregulation of the telecommunications industry, effective pricing and revenue management, as well as an understanding of competitive pressures are key factors that will improve revenue in telecommunications companies. These chapters present some novel ideas related to pricing (including auction-based pricing of network bandwidth) and modeling competition in the industry. The next seven chapters outline what successful telecommunications companies of the future will need to do in order to minimize their costs and still meet customer expectations. In this context the optimal design/provisioning of telecommunication networks plays an important role. These chapters focus on network design for a wide range of technologies including SONET, SDH, WDM, and MPLS. They include the latest research developments related to the modeling and solving of network design problems. The final six chapters provide insightful solutions to several resource allocation problems. Day-to-day management/control of telecommunications networks is dependant upon the optimal allocation of resources.

Technology-oriented customer touchpoints in context of services in retailing : A differentiated analysis on social presence and privacy calculus

Addresses the topic of technology use along different touchpoints in context of different services in retailing, both in offline and online retail, with a total of eight essays. In particular, the interaction of technology use and the frontline employee is also considered and a special focus is placed on aspects of data disclosure by customers. In this context, the essays concentrate in varying degrees on the social interaction between customer, frontline employee and a service-technology, as well as on the balancing of benefits and risks for the customer in a possible disclosure of personal information.

Teamwork for Innovation in Sub-Saharan Africa

Whereas most insights concerning the dynamics of work groups come from North American or Western European environments, Hannah Titilayo Seriki concentrates on teams operating within the complex societal context of sub-Saharan Africa. The author develops a multi-level theory of African teams’ innovative performance and regards the team as a sub-system of the organisation, which is subjected to societal influences. She compares the insights gained from case studies in Nigeria and in South Africa with findings from two Germanic European cases. The results of her study imply that managers can actively and consciously influence the way their organisations pass on societal forces to their sub-units. Distinct differences between European and African cases are found, especially in the areas of team leadership and motivation.

Teaching Writing in Chinese Speaking Areas

One of the most civilized nations in history, China has a long-standing writing tradition and many Chinese texts have become world treasures. However, the way the Chinese teach writing in various countries in contemporary times is little known to the outside world, especially in Western countries. Undoubtedly, the Chinese have had an established traditional method of writing instruction. However, recent social and political developments have created the perception amongst both practitioners and researchers of a need for change. Teaching Tolerance in a Globalized World

Identifies factors and conditions that can help schools and education systems promote tolerance in a globalized world. The IEA’s International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS) is a comparative research program designed to investigate the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens, and provides a wealth of data permitting not only comparison between countries but also comparisons between schools within countries, and students within countries. Advanced analytical methods provide insights into relationships between students’ attitudes towards cultural diversity and the characteristics of the students themselves, their families, their teachers and school principals. The world-wide reform movement has now been in process for thirty years and it is therefore perhaps an appropriate point to consider its implications for the work of teachers thus far and to ponder on the future. Tall buildings : Structural systems and aerodynamic form

The structural challenges of building 800 metres into the sky are substantial, and include several factors which do not affect low-rise construction. This book focusses on these areas specifically to provide the architectural and structural knowledge which must be taken into account in order to design tall buildings successfully. In presenting examples of steel, reinforced concrete, and composite structural systems for such buildings, it is shown that wind load has a very important effect on the architectural and structural design. The aerodynamic approach to tall buildings is considered in this context, as is earthquake induced lateral loading.

Surveying Climate-Relevant Behavior : Measurements, Obstacles, and Implications
