Grammatical Inference ; Algorithms and Applications : 9th International Colloquium, ICGI 2008 Saint-Malo, France, September 22-24, 2008 Proceedings
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Colloquium on Grammatical Inference, ICGI 2008, held in Saint-Malo, France, in September 2008.The 21 revised full papers and 8 revised short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 36 submissions. The topics of the papers presented vary from theoretical results of learning algorithms to innovative applications of grammatical inference, and from learning several interesting classes of formal grammars to applications to natural language processing.
Governance and performance of education systems
The proposed book is unique in that it brings together a wide range of disciplines and experience from several countries. What are possible models of governance? How do we measure their effects in terms of efficiency and equity? What type of contribution can financial and information systems make? How do we adapt the prevailing culture to the challenge of better performance? These are some of the concrete questions to which this book provides an answer.
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz : The Art of Controversies
All these perspectives (and more) are united in what this book identifies as his Art of Controversies, which might also be called an Art of Dialectical Cooperation. For it is based on the idea that knowledge production, acquisition, and evolution is not a one-man affair, but the result of the cooperation of many, coming from different perspectives; whence it follows that not only tolerance vis-à-vis the other, but also valuing the other’s contribution and integrating it – whether it stems from another age, continent, culture, discipline, religion, or individual – is indispensable. This dialectical Leibniz that emerges from the selected texts here translated, commented, and interpreted in the light of their context, isn’t for sure the familiar one. Yet, perhaps surprisingly.
Globalisation, Poverty and Conflict : A Critical 'Development' Reader
Is ‘development’ passé? Is it merely a by-product or a ‘trickle down’ effect of economic growth, spurred by globalisation? Will poverty simply diminish with increased global markets? Globalisation, Poverty and Conflict examines the inter-relationships between globalisation, poverty and conflict. It complements current debates in the field of development studies and, in an era in which development fatigue seems to have become more profound than ever before, it brings the importance of development once again to the forefront. Achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015 is a concrete target which many governments have agreed to work towards.Whether these goals can be realised is another issue. Nonetheless, the Millennium Development Goals have brought more focused attention to development in the past few years and renewed debate about the relationships between the process of globalisation and widespread poverty and the emergence of violent conflicts. The authors in this edited volume discuss these inter-related and highly controversial topical elements of development in a number of chapters organised around three sets of issues: (1) globalisation, inequality and poverty; (2) governance, civil society and poverty; and (3) resource degradation, institutions and conflict. The contributions represent current thinking on (and practice of) development policy, poverty reduction, the need for multi-level democratic institutions, and the containing and prevention of conflicts. The authors confront the predominant mainstream ideas on ‘development’ and propose alternatives.
Geometric Properties for Incomplete Data
Computer vision and image analysis require interdisciplinary collaboration between mathematics and engineering. This book addresses the area of high-accuracy measurements of length, curvature, motion parameters and other geometrical quantities from acquired image data. It is a common problem that these measurements are incomplete or noisy, such that considerable efforts are necessary to regularise the data, to fill in missing information, and to judge the accuracy and reliability of these results. This monograph brings together contributions from researchers in computer vision, engineering and mathematics who are working in this area.
Geographical Education in a Changing World : Past Experience, Current Trends and Future Challenges
The status of geography in school curricula varies across the globe. Geography, as a discrete subject, has, in some countries, established a strong position in both primary and secondary schools while in others it has a weaker position, often a component of integrated and cross-curricular arrangements. Globally, the trend is for geography's status to be challenged. A central theme of this book is the location of geography in school curricula with particular reference to centrality and marginality. A second theme relates to the subject status of geography. A third theme relates to the spirit and purpose of school geography and the traditions that underpin the subject and how these are changing. A fourth theme relates to the way geography is being seen by curriculum planners as contributing to the achievement of governmental aims for society in general. The central object of this book is the measure of geometric quantities describing N a subset of the Euclidean space (E ,), endowed with its standard scalar product. But the distance from the origin O to the closest point ofS is not, 0 since it is not invariant under translations ofS. It is important to point out that the property of being geometric depends on the chosen group. For instance, ifG is the 1 N group of projective transformations of E , then the property ofS being a circle is geometric forG but not forG , while the property of being a conic or a straight 0 1 line is geometric for bothG andG . This point of view may be generalized to any 0 1 subsetS of any vector space E endowed with a groupG acting on it.
Generalized Convexity, Generalized Monotonicity and Applications ; Proceedings of the 7th International Symposium on Generalized Convexity and Generalized Monotonicity
This volume contains a collection of refereed articles on generalized convexity and generalized monotonicity. The first part of the book contains invited papers with applications of (generalized) convexity to such diverse fields as algebraic dynamics of the Gamma function values, discrete optimization, Lipschitzian stability of parametric constraint systems, and monotonicity of functions. The second part contains contributions presenting the latest developments in generalized convexity and generalized monotonicity: its connections with discrete and with continuous optimization, multiobjective optimization, fractional programming, nonsmooth Aanalysis, variational inequalities, and its applications to concrete problems such as finding equilibrium prices in mathematical economics, or hydrothermal scheduling.

Fuzzy Probability and Statistics
This book combines material from our previous books FP (Fuzzy Probabilities: New Approach and Applications,Physica-Verlag, 2003) and FS (Fuzzy Statistics, Springer, 2004), plus has about one third new results. From FP we have material on basic fuzzy probability, discrete (fuzzy Poisson,binomial) and continuous (uniform, normal, exponential) fuzzy random variables. From FS we included chapters on fuzzy estimation and fuzzy hypothesis testing related to means, variances, proportions, correlation and regression. New material includes fuzzy estimators for arrival and service rates, and the uniform distribution, with applications in fuzzy queuing theory. Also, new to this book, is three chapters on fuzzy maximum entropy (imprecise side conditions) estimators producing fuzzy distributions and crisp discrete/continuous distributions.
Future Interaction Design
In 1969 Herbert Simon wrote a book, The Science of the Artificial, in which he argued that cognitive science should have its area of application in the design of devices. He proposed the foundation of a science of the artificial related with cognitive science in the sense in which we have traditionally understood the relationship between the engineering disciplines and the basic sciences. Such a science has been called cognitive ergonomics or cognitive engineering (Norman 1986). Simon’s cognitive ergonomics (1969), would be independent of cognitive science, its basic science, although both would be closely related. Cognitive science would contribute knowledge on human cognitive processes, and cognitive ergonomics would contribute concrete problems of design that should be solved in the context of the creation of devices. Norman (1986), the author that coined the term cognitive engineering, conceived it as an applied cognitive science where the knowledge of cognitive science is combined with that of engineering to solve design problems. According to Norman, its objectives would be: (1) to understand the fundamental principles of human actions important for the development of the engineering of design principles, and (2) to build systems that are pleasant in their use.
