PCR-based Detection of Brucella Species in Milk and Dairy Products from Syria Countryside as Surrogate Marker of Risk of Infection to the Urban Population

Brucellosis, also known as Malta or undulant fever, is a chronic, febrile, occupational disease caused by the Brucella bacterium. Brucella is an intracellular parasite that invades the phagocytes and causes a debilitating illness in humans that requires combined and extensive antibiotic treatment. This highly virulent stealth pathogen is transmitted by the consumption of infected, unpasteurized animal-milk products. Infection can also occur by direct contact with infected animal parts through cuts and abrasions on the skin. In animals, this pathogen causes sterility and spontaneous abortions, leading to significant economic losses to livestock production. The disease remains to be one of the most important health disorders spread worldwide and its eradication continues to be a difficult challenge.

Parasites, pussycats and psychosis : The unknown dangers of human toxoplasmosis

Analyzes the evidence linking Toxoplasma gondii to the increasing incidence of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in the United States. Initially establishing that infectious agents are regularly transmitted from animals to humans, lead to human disease, and that infectious agents can cause psychosis, it then examines the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii in detail. Infecting 40 million Americans, Toxoplasma gondii is known to cause congenital infections, eye disease, and encephalitis for individuals who are immunosuppressed.

Parallel Algorithms and Cluster Computing ; Implementations, Algorithms and Applications

Presents major advances in high performance computing as well as major advances due to high performance computing. It contains a collection of papers in which results achieved in the collaboration of scientists from computer science, mathematics, physics, and mechanical engineering are presented. From the science problems to the mathematical algorithms and on to the effective implementation of these algorithms on massively parallel and cluster computers we present state-of-the-art methods and technology as well as exemplary results in these fields. This book shows that problems which seem superficially distinct become intimately connected on a computational level.

Pancreatic Beta Cell in Health and Disease

The beta cells of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans are the only cells in the body that produce and secrete insulin. This metabolic hormone plays a central role in the maintenance of glucose homeostasis, regulating glucose uptake in muscle and adipose tissue as well as carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism in these tissues and the liver. This book provides a comprehensive up-to-date review of the beta cell in health and disease. Chapters address the architecture and pathology of normal and diabetic pancreatic islets, regulation of beta-cell proliferation and death, the potential of stem cells and extra-pancreatic tissues as beta-cell replacement therapies, insulin biosynthesis, regulation of insulin secretion including metabolic control, ion channels, gap junctions, cyclic AMP, incretins, and exocytosis, development of novel imaging techniques, and genetic disorders of the beta cell. A primary aim of the book is to encourage students and young basic and clinical investigators to become actively involved in diabetes research and the search for new approaches to prevent and treat diabetes.

Paediatric Musculoskeletal Disease : With an Emphasis on Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a technique particularly suited to the investigation of disorders in children. It is painless, safe and non-threatening. There are significant strengths and weaknesses of its use in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders. This text describes the methods, findings and potential pitfalls of imaging where US is commonly used as the primary diagnostic method and where it is best as an adjunct to other imaging. The alternative imaging techniques including CT, MRI, scintigraphy and plain radiography are described in detail where appropriate. The reader of this book should obtain a working knowledge of the potential advantages of US whilst understanding when and where other forms of imaging are preferred. The authors have international reputations as researchers, clinicians and teachers in their field.

Oxytocin and related neuropsychiatric disorder

Oxytocin (OT), a hypothalamic neuropeptide involved in regulating the social behaviour of all vertebrates, has been proposed as a treatment for a number of neuropsychiatric disorders characterised by deficits in the social domain. Over the last few decades, advances focused on understanding the social effects of OT and its role in physiological conditions and brain diseases, e first recognized as a regulator of parturition and lactation which has recently gained attention for its ability to modulate social behaviors. here is mounting preclinical evidence that targeting the brain oxytocin system may provide that breakthrough. Substance use disorders are characterised by a viscous cycle of bingeing and intoxication, followed by withdrawal and negative affect, and finally preoccupation and anticipation that triggers relapse and further consumption.

Oxidative Phosphorylation in Health and Disease

Mitochondrial diseases are often hard to diagnose. From the time they were first researched without animal models, patients of mitochondrial diseases were of equal interest to both clinical and basic scientists. With the new research done, this book includes updates on the normal structure, function, and molecular biology of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, information on traditional diagnostical methodologies, and an overview of the diagnostic promise of new technologies. The hypermetabolism of Luft disease, although only seen twice, is also studied. There are critical reviews of symptoms and signs associated with syndromes, as well as updates on the genetic defects of either the mitochondrial or the nuclear genome responsible for many disorders.

Overcoming Insomnia

Nowadays, a high percentage of the population in modern society suffers from various kinds of sleep disturbances, due to the impact of increased physiological and socio-cultural stress factors. One of the most common sleep complaints, which the human being has suffered from since ancient times, is insomnia. Although its literal meaning is a total lack of sleep, in clinical and practical terms insomnia has come to refer to a difficulty in initiating and/or maintaining sleep, or non-restorative, non-refreshing sleep. In a survey conducted in the general population of different countries, the prevalence of insomnia was estimated to be about one third of the adult population.

Orthopedic Rehabilitation, Assessment, and Enablement

Medical practitioners involved in the treatment of diseases, disorders, and injuries of the musculoskeletal system will appreciate the very - portant role of rehabilitation. There are 19 chapters, arranged in a logical sequence. The first ch- ter gives a holistic view of what the rehabilitation process should include and emphasises that the unique feature of a rehabilitation service is thinking about a patient and his problems, not simply doing something to the patient, and the focus should be on trying to help each patient achieve his own goals. Chapters 2 to 8 are about the rehabilitation tools for assessing, inv- tigating and treating patients. Chapters 9 to 17 are about rehabilitation for specific types of musculoskeletal disorders, each of which has its own complex problems, requiring practitioners to gain further in-depth training and experience to give effective treatment.

Orofacial Pain and Headache

Integrate knowledge across these disciplines to improve diagnostic accuracy and clinical management of chronic pain conditions and foster a beneficial collaboration between headache specialists and orofacial pain experts. The first chapters cover the diagnostic process, psychosocial modifying factors, and the anatomy and neurophysiology of the trigeminal nerve, but the bulk of the book is given over to a comprehensive review of the major clinical families of craniofacial pain. In this new edition, the authors place a focus on presenting clinical features and outlining treatment strategies, and the clinical case reports offer insight into the complexity of orofacial pain diagnosis and management.
