The Professoriate : Profile of a Profession

What does it mean to be an academic in the twenty first century? Clearly, there is no one answer to this question, as the diversity evident in the following chapters reveals. Elite research universities often tend to join with others of their kind, so that a professor from an elite US institution may well undertake a Japanese sabbatical (if at all) at the University of Tokyo, a UK semester at Oxford or Cambridge, or an Australian semester at the University of Sydney, or perhaps Melbourne. At each, they can expect to have at their disposal well-stocked libraries, replete with requisite books, journals and databases, (many now available electronically), as well as highly regarded specialist peers in their research areas, with whom they can discuss their work in detail.

The Private Sphere : An Emotional Territory And Its Agent

The non-interference perspective is common when theorizing about the protection of the private life of individuals and their families. However, this accepted way of looking at things, leads our thoughts astray. It fails to do justice to the interests both in being left in peace but at the same time participating in a community together with other people. New methods of communications interception, video and even satellite surveillance allow insight and an entry into personal matters, but they can also be used to satisfy people's need for protection, safety and security in public places. A theory about the respect for the individual's right to a private sphere and its protection ought therefore to incorporate both these interests.

The Practice and Theory of School Improvement : International Handbook of Educational Change

This set of four volumes on Educational Change brings together evidence and insights on educational change issues from leading writers and researchers in the field from across the world. Many of these writers, whose chapters have been specially written for these books, have been investigating, helping initiate and implementing educational change, for most or all of their lengthy careers. Others are working on the cutting edge of theory and practice in educational change, taking the field in new or even more challenging directions. And some are more skeptical about the literature of educational change and the assumptions on which it rests. They help us to approach projects of understanding or initiating educational change more deeply, reflectively and realistically. Educational change and reform have rarely had so much prominence within public policy, in so many different places.

The Power of Technology for Learning

In today’s dynamic global business environment where knowledge is a main asset and learning becomes the most important process, Business Education needs to employ the right practices to develop future leaders. Businesses require graduates that become true experts. But can business schools indeed create learning experiences that address the needs of the global marketplace? Can they teach students to build learning organizations? The articles in this volume detail successful approaches developed by business educators and researchers. The approaches have been implemented to solve real problems and to provide students with the ethical and analytical abilities they will need to both compete and contribute to the betterment of others. The thematic part of this volume focuses on the potential of interactive on-line activities to promote business and economics education. The Power of Optical/IR Interferometry : Recent Scientific Results and 2nd Generation Instrumentation ; Proceedings of the ESO Workshop held in Garching, Germany, 4-8 April 2005

Long-baseline interferometry has been traditionally regarded as a very technical method with a limited number of applications. At the turn of the millennium, with the introduction of large community-oriented facilities such as the VLTI, we are seeing a transformation into a major astronomical technique, with a corresponding dramatic increase in the number of publications. This book marks this transition, by providing a wide and deep insight into a large number of diverse and compelling results recently obtained by long-baseline interferometers. It also provides an insight into concepts which form the basis of future instruments and further developments in this technique.

The power of communicating the family firm status : The positive effect of family firms as a brand on consumer buying behavior and consumer happiness

Margarete Rosina investigates whether it makes sense for family firms to communicate their family firm status to consumers. To do so, she conducts two experimental studies using a sample of 349 consumers. Using a branding perspective, the first study looks at whether consumers perceive family firm brands as more authentic and why and how this influences their buying behavior. The second study applies a consumer happiness perspective and investigates whether family firms signal prosocial behaviors related to “doing good”, namely being a good employer and socially responsible, and whether this, in turn, leads to higher levels of consumer happiness when buying from family firms.

The Polycystic Ovary Syndrome : Current Concepts on Pathogenesis and Clinical Care

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the single most common endocrinologic abnormality of women, affecting approximately 1 in 10-to 15 women of reproductive age. It is also the most frequent cause of oligo-ovulatory infertility. PCOS patients demonstrate androgenic symptoms including hirsutism, alopecia, and acne. Furthermore, patients with PCOS are at significant risk for developing diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and possibly cardiovascular disease. It is estimated that the healthcare cost exceeds four billion dollars annually in the United States alone, not even accounting for the significant negative effect this disorder has on quality of life.

The Pollen Tube : A Cellular and Molecular Perspective

The enormous amount of data now available about the pollen tube clearly reflects its qualities as a biological model that go much beyond that of a carrier of sperm cells essential for plant reproduction. The diversity of techniques and methodologies currently used to study pollen and pollen tube growth is reflected in this book written by biochemists, cell biologists, molecular biologists and geneticists. Their different perspectives demonstrate that pollen tubes are excellent models for plant cell research, particularly suitable for investigations on cell tip growth and polarization, signal transduction, channel and ion flux activity, gene expression, cytoskeleton and wall structure, membrane dynamics and even cell–cell communication.

The Politics of Adoption : International Perspectives on Law, Policy & Practice

Adoption has always had a political dimension. Its potential use to achieve political ends has been evident throughout history and in many different cultures. In Roman 1 times an emperor would adopt a successful general to continue his rule. In Ireland under the Brehon Laws the reciprocal placements of children between clans was 2 an accepted means of cementing mutual allegiances. In Japan the adoption of non-relatives was traditionally seen as a means of allying with the fortunes of 3 the ruling family. The willingness of governments to use adoption as a political strategy was apparent, for example, in Australia where it was used to further 4 the assimilation of indigenous people.
