Robot Adventures in Python and C

In this book the author stresses software as the most important topic in modern robotics. In particular the book concentrates on software for mobile robots, and the author demonstrates how inexpensive solutions can be constructed by mounting Raspberry Pi controllers and cameras onto model cars or other simple mechanical drive systems. He introduces EyeSim-VR, a freely available system that can realistically simulate driving, swimming, diving, and walking robots. The emphasis throughout is on algorithm development and all software assignments can run on real robot hardware, as well as on the simulation system presented.

ReRAM-Based Machine Learning

The transition towards exascale computing has resulted in major transformations in computing paradigms. The need to analyze and respond to such large amounts of data sets has led to the adoption of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods in a wide range of applications. One of the major challenges is the fetching of data from computing memory and writing it back without experiencing a memory-wall bottleneck. To address such concerns, in-memory computing (IMC) and supporting frameworks have been introduced. In-memory computing methods have ultra-low power and high-density embedded storage. Resistive Random-Access Memory (ReRAM) technology seems the most promising IMC solution due to its minimized leakage power, reduced power consumption and smaller hardware footprint, as well as its compatibility with CMOS technology, which is widely used in industry. Introduce ReRAM techniques for performing distributed computing using IMC accelerators, present ReRAM-based IMC architectures that can perform computations of ML and data-intensive applications, as well as strategies to map ML designs onto hardware accelerators.

Representation Learning : Propositionalization and Embeddings

This monograph addresses advances in representation learning, a cutting-edge research area of machine learning. Representation learning refers to modern data transformation techniques that convert data of different modalities and complexity, including texts, graphs, and relations, into compact tabular representations, which effectively capture their semantic properties and relations. The monograph focuses on (i) propositionalization approaches, established in relational learning and inductive logic programming, and (ii) embedding approaches, which have gained popularity with recent advances in deep learning. The authors establish a unifying perspective on representation learning techniques developed in these various areas of modern data science, enabling the reader to understand the common underlying principles and to gain insight using selected examples and sample Python code. The monograph should be of interest to a wide audience, ranging from data scientists, machine learning researchers and students to developers, software engineers and industrial researchers interested in hands-on AI solutions.

Relativity and the Nature of Spacetime

The most important question that is addressed in this book is "what is the nature (the ontological status) of spacetime?" or, equivalently, "what is the dimensionality of the world at the macroscopic level?" The answer to this question is developed via a thorough analysis of relativistic effects and explicitly asking whether the objects involved in those effects are three-dimensional or four-dimensional. This analysis clearly shows that if the world and the physical objects were three-dimensional, none of the kinematic relativistic effects and the experimental evidence supporting them would be possible. The implications of this result for physics, philosophy, and our entire world view are discussed.

Rectal Prolapse : Diagnosis and Clinical Management

The pathophysiology of external rectal prolapse is still uncertain, and its clinical and instrumental diagnostic assessment as well as the appropriate surgical or medical approach need to be clarified. The relative rarity of this pathology prevents randomised, controlled trials from being carried out in a single institution and the opinions of outstanding leaders in this field are therefore particularly important. With this collaborative, multiauthor work, the editors fulfil that requirement by drawing together the experience of highly recognised national and international professionals. The volume contains extensive and valuable information regarding preferred methods of evaluating patients with rectal prolapse: its underlying aetiology and pathophysiology, the different treatment methods (both surgical and nonsurgical), the expected functional results following surgery and the management of complex clinical presentations associated with this condition.

Recent Advances in Palaeodemography : Data, Techniques, Patterns

The written data used by demographers essentially cover the last five centuries. Since Homo Ergaster moved out of Africa around 1.8 million years ago and until the sub-contemporary periods, there is no data allowing us to reconstruct a demographic history that can be interpreted with the traditional tools of demography. If we want to be able to tackle demographic issues over a long evolutionary duration, trying to reconstitute our human demographic history and thinking out and testing macro-demographic theories, we need to draw on sources other than written data and on techniques other than those commonly used by demographers. This necessarily means using information of every kind, from archaeology, physical anthropology, paleontology, primatology or genetics, along with relevant models of interpretation.

Reasoning Web ; Vol. 3564 : 1st International Summer School 2005, Msida, Malta, July 25-29, 2005, Revised Lectures

Contains the tutorial papers of the Summer School “Reasoning Web, ”July 25–29, 2005. The main idea of the Semantic Web is to enrich Web data with meta-data carrying a “meaning” of the data and allowing Web-based systems to reason about data (and meta-data). The meta-data used in Semantic Web applications is usually linked to a conceptualization of the application domain shared by di?erent applications. Such a conceptualization is called an ontology and species classes of objects and relations between them. Ontologies are defined by ontology languages, based on logic and supporting formal reasoning. Just as the current Web is inherently heterogeneous in data formats and data semantics, the Semantic Web will be inherently heterogeneous in its reasoning forms. - deed, any single form of reasoning turns out to be insu?cient in the Semantic Web.

Realising Systems Thinking : Knowledge and Action in Management Science

This book provides a thorough evaluation of the philosophy of systems, ending up with an introduction to multimethodology and its application in real situations. This wide-ranging book deals, in a detailed and scholarly way, with the contribution of a systems approach to a range of disciplines from philosophy and biology to social theory and management. It weaves together material from some of the pre-eminent thinkers of the day — Maturana, Varela, Bateson, Merleau-Ponty, Checkland, Giddens, Habermas, Bhaskar, and Luhmann — to create a coherent path from the most fundamental work on philosophical issues of ontology and epistemology through specific domains of knowledge about the nature of information and meaning, human communication, and social intervention right up to the implications of these theoretical developments for action and intervention in real-world affairs.

Psicologia Clinica : Dialoghi e confronti = Clinical Psychology : Dialogues and Comparisons

Project Management and Risk Management in Complex Projects : Studies in Organizational Semiotics

The goal of this volume is to prove that mixed utterances in young bilinguals can be analyzed in the same way as adult code-switching. Analyzing a rich corpus of spontaneous child data, the author provides detailed empirical evidence for latest minimalist assumptions on the architecture of mind and confirms that code-switching is only constrained by the two grammars of the languages involved.
