Resource Management in Satellite Networks : Optimization and Cross-Layer Design

Resource Management in Satellite Networks: Optimization and Cross-Layer Design addresses the emergent research area of cross-layer air interface design for satellite systems. A detailed analysis of cross-layer methods is presented along with new analytical and simulation results demonstrating that these techniques can assures high QoS levels for differentiated traffic classes. The research presented integrates the expertise of a wide range of researchers, and addresses all aspects of system design (e.g., propagation issues, resource management techniques, link design, QoS, transport protocols, etc.). Of particular importance is the inclusion of research applicable to both fixed and mobile satellite systems.

Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks : Theory and Algorithms

The main objective of this book is to provide tools for better understa- ing the fundamental tradeoffs and interdependencies in wireless networks, with the goalof designing resourceallocation strategies that exploit these - terdependencies to achieve signi?cant performance gains. The book consists of three largely independent parts: theory, applications and appendices. The first part ends with some bibliographical comments and the second part starts with a short introduction to the problem of resource allocation in wireless networks. Below we brie?y summarize the content of each part.

Resilience of Cities to Terrorist and other Threats : Learning from 9/11 and further Research Issues

Cities tend to become more crowded, the high rise buildings taller, the traffic nodes more complex. The volume of hazardous cargo passing increases with the growth of economy and the expansion of technology. As we have seen in the recent past, cities can become too easily a focus of terror. To counter these trends measures have to be taken. This book presents an overview of threats and measures based on a NATO advanced research workshop meant to make an inventory of items on which, for making progress research will be worthwhile to perform. The spectrum of subjects is broad. It covers various types of hazard threats, the mechanisms of collapse of structures including the doubts about why the WTC buildings collapsed following the impact of aircraft and the ensuing fires. New materials will offer improvements for protection, progress will be described in analyzing the robustness of structures against loading of various nature, and what can be gained by well performed risk control and planning of emergency response, taking trade-offs into account and requiring the new approach of scenario analysis. The book also contains an excellent report about the people flow along evacuation routes. It finally considers warning and communication systems and ways to motivate people to protect themselves.

Resilience : A new paradigm of nuclear safety : From accident mitigation to resilient society facing extreme situations

This book summarizes presentations and discussions from the two-day international workshop held at UC Berkeley in March 2015, and derives questions to be addressed in multi-disciplinary research toward a new paradigm of nuclear safety. The consequences of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident in March 2011 have fuelled the debate on nuclear safety: while there were no casualties due to radiation, there was substantial damage to local communities. The lack of common understanding of the basics of environmental and radiological sciences has made it difficult for stakeholders to develop effective strategies to accelerate recovery, and this is compounded by a lack of effective decision-making due to the eroded public trust in the government and operators. Recognizing that making a society resilient and achieving higher levels of saf

Residual Stress Measurement and the Slitting Method

Residual Stress Measurement and the Slitting Method provides complete coverage of the slitting method with new results in analysis, computation and estimation. It discusses different roles of residual stresses from the fracture mechanics perspective. Covering both near-surface and through-thickness residual stress measurements, the book serves as a reference tool for graduate students, researchers and practicing engineers. The authors include discussions on the general expressions for residual stresses acting on the site of a slit, the analysis based on fracture mechanics solutions and finite element computations, the estimations using continuous and piecewise functions with and without least squares fit, examples of residual stress measurement and error analysis, the measurement of stress intensity factors, and many more timely topics.

Researching Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship is a phenomenon of tremendous societal importance. It is also an elusive phenomenon, which makes researching it fun, fascinating—and frustrating at times. In Researching Entrepreneurship one of the most highly recognized entrepreneurship scholars shares in a personal and readable way his rich experience and ideas on how entrepreneurship can or should be researched. Numerous real examples accompany the treatment of problems and solutions concerning design, sampling, operationalization and analysis. Suggestions for further improvements are also provided.

Research on teaching and learning probability

This book summarizes the vast amount of research related to teaching and learning probability that has been conducted for more than 50 years in a variety of disciplines. It begins with a synthesis of the most important probability interpretations throughout history: intuitive, classical, frequentist, subjective, logical propensity and axiomatic views. It discusses their possible applications, philosophical problems, as well as their potential and the level of interest they enjoy at different educational levels. Next, the book describes the main features of probabilistic thinking and reasoning, including the contrast to classical logic, probability language features, the role of intuitions, as well as paradoxes and the relevance of modeling. It presents an analysis of the differences between conditioning and causation, the variability expression in data as a sum of random and causal variations, as well as those of probabilistic versus statistical thinking.

Research Methods in Urban and Regional Planning

Urban and regional planners develop and evaluate plans for communities—the places we live, work, interact, and entertain on a daily basis. Their responsibilities require skills of retrieving, analyzing and presenting data.In specific, this book describes methods used in four areas: demographic analysis, economic analysis, land use analysis, and transportation analysis. Many people have been helpful and supportive throughout this endeavor. Up front are our families who understood and supported us during the period. Andrea Yang, Rainer’s wife and also a planner, edited various chapters. David Edelman and Wolfgang Preiser provided suggestions for the content of this book and excellent insights and guidance.
