Measuring Methane Production from Ruminants

The world’s livestock sector is amidst a major transformation, fuelled by high demand for meat and milk, which is likely to double over the next two decades in developing countries. The challenge is to enhance animal productivity without adversely affecting the environment. A key to this is reducing methane emissions from ruminants. The major limitation to ruminant production in many tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Latin America, where a large proportion of the global ruminant population is located, is poor nutrition. The productivity of animals is restricted by the low nitrogen and high fibre content of the native grasses and crop residues, which form the basis of the diets in these regions. Animals on these types of diets emit more methane than animals fed better quality temperate forages. These methane emissions represent a loss of digestible energy to the animal (up to 15%) as well as a threat to the environment. The challenge is to devise nutritional strategies and identify dietary components, particularly from locally available plant resources, that reduce methane emissions.

Mathematics of Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Flows

Large eddy simulation (LES) is a method of scientific computation seeking to predict the dynamics of organized structures in turbulent flows by approximating local, spatial averages of the flow. This book focuses on the mathematical foundations of LES and its models and provides a connection between the powerful tools of applied mathematics, partial differential equations and LES. Thus, it is concerned with fundamental aspects not treated so deeply in the other books in the field, aspects such as well-posedness of the models, their energy balance and the connection to the Leray theory of weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations.

Isodual theory of antimatter : With applications to antigravity, grand unification and cosmology

Antimatter, already conjectured by A. Schuster in 1898, was actually predicted by P.A.M. Dirac in the late 19-twenties in the negative-energy solutions of the Dirac equation. Its existence was subsequently confirmed via the Wilson chamber and became an established part of theoretical physics. Dirac soon discovered that particles with negative energy do not behave in a physically conventional manner, and he therefore developed his "hole theory". This restricted the study of antimatter to the sole level of second quantization. As a result antimatter created a scientific imbalance, because matter was treated at all levels of study, while antimatter was treated only at the level of second quantization. In search of a new mathematics for the resolution of this imbalance the author conceived what we know today as Santilli’s isodual mathematics, which permitted the construction of isodual classical mechanics, isodual quantization and isodual quantum mechanics. The scope of this monograph is to show that our classical, quantum and cosmological knowledge of antimatter is at its beginning with much yet to be discovered, and that a commitment to antimatter by experimentalists will be invaluable to antimatter science.

Intumescent Coating and Fire Protection of Steel Structures

Introduced are the features and applications of intumescent coatings for protecting steel structures against fire. The constant effective thermal conductivity is defined and employed to simplify the quantification for the thermo-resistance of intumescent coatings. An experimental investigation into the hydrothermal aging effects on insulative properties of intumescent coatings is presented, as well as the influence of topcoat on insulation and aging of intumescent coatings. Also described is a practical method for calculating the temperature of the protected steel structures with intumescent coatings in order to evaluate the fire safety of a structure.

Introduction to Structural Analysis

Covers the principles of structural analysis without any requirement of prior knowledge of structures or equations. Beginning with basic principles of equilibrium of forces and moments, all other subsequent theories of structural analysis have been discussed logically. Divided into two major parts, this book discusses the basics of mechanics and principles of degrees of freedom upon which the entire paradigm rests, followed by analysis of determinate and indeterminate structures. The energy method of structural analysis is also included.

Interphases and Mesophases in Polymer Crystallization I

Polyethylene forms a two-dimensional hexagonal phase, stable at 3 GPa depending on molecular length, which in recent years has been claimed to intervene in crystallization prior to the formation of the usual orthorhombic phase even at atmospheric pressure. This claim is evaluated and shown to be without substance. There is very little evidence that the theoretical possibility of thin lamellae being more stable in the hexagonal phase than the orthorhombic at atmospheric pressure, if the former has sufficiently low fold surface free energy, does occur in practice. But the existence of single crystals of the orthorhombic phase unambiguously shows that they did not have a hexagonal precursor; that would have made them threefold twins. The overwhelming mass of evidence is that orthorhombic and hexagonal phases crystallize independently in accordance with the phase diagram and kinetic competition during growth, as has been understood since the hexagonal phase was discovered.
