An Introduction to Kolmogorov Complexity and Its Applications

Written by two experts in the field, this book is ideal for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and researchers in all fields of science. It is self-contained: it contains the basic requirements from mathematics, probability theory, statistics, information theory, and computer science. Included are history, theory, new developments, a wide range of applications, numerous (new) problem sets, comments, source references, and hints to solutions of problems. This is the only comprehensive treatment of the central ideas of Kolmogorov complexity and their applications.

Agent-oriented information systems III ; 7th International bi-conference workshop, AOIS 2005, Utrecht, The Netherlands, July 26, 2005, and Klagenfurt, Austria, October 27, 2005, Revised Selected Papers

In 2005, two AOIS workshops were held internationally. The first was affiliated with the AAMAS 2005 meeting in July in Utrecht in The Netherlands and chaired by Henderson-Sellers and Winikoff and the second with ER 2005 in November in Klagenfurt in Austria and chaired by Kolp and Bresciani. The best papers from these meetings were identified and authors invited to revise and possibly extend their papers in the light of reviewers’ comments and feedback at the workshop. We have grouped these papers loosely under four headings: Agent behavior, communications and reasoning; Methodologies and ontologies; Agent-oriented software engineering; and Applications.

Affect and Mathematics Education : Fresh Perspectives on Motivation, Engagement, and Identity

Presents the latest trends in research in the area. Following an introduction and a survey chapter providing a concise overview of the state-of-art in the field of mathematics-related affect, the book is divided into three main sections: motivation and values, engagement, and identity in mathematics education. Each section comprises several independent chapters based on original research, as well as a reflective commentary by an expert in the area. Collectively, the chapters present a rich methodological spectrum, from narrative analysis to structural equation modelling.

Advanced Techniques in Diagnostic Microbiology

The book is divided into two sections. The first techniques section covers the principles and characteristics of techniques ranging from rapid antigen testing, to advanced antibody detection, to in vitro nucleic acid amplification techniques, and to nucleic acid microarray and mass spectrometry. Sufficient space is assigned to cover different nucleic acid amplification formats that are currently being used widely in the diagnostic microbiology field. Within each technique, examples are given regarding its application in the diagnostic field. Commercial product information, if available, is introduced with commentary in each chapt

Abord clinique en urologie = Clinical approach in urology

Seduced by the idea of commenting on the clinical experience they have acquired during their career, the authors have deliberately approached their specialty by describing the symptoms that give the chapters their titles. They nevertheless described the differential diagnoses, the diseases involved and the treatments. After a chapter devoted to the examination of the patient, including the detours of the interrogation, back pain or scrotal pain are analyzed. The authors then turned to voiding disorders and their causes. The peculiarities of hematuria, depending on their level of origin, are described and commented on. The semiology of tumor masses is carefully detailed and, conversely, the problem of prostate cancer screening by PSA is dealt with in a separate chapter. Erectile dysfunction and penile diseases are the last chapters. In the line of the “Clinical approach” collection, this manual is easy to consult thanks to a detailed index, easy to understand because it is written in clear language and, moreover, well illustrated (21 diagrams and 2 tables). In this little book, the authors have approached urology from a perspective close to how patients feel.

A Field Guide to Algebra

Focuses on the structure of fields and is intended for a second course in abstract algebra. Besides providing proofs of the transcendance of pi and e, the book includes material on differential Galois groups and a proof of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem. The reader will hear about equations, both polynomial and differential, and about the algebraic structure of their solutions. In explaining these concepts, the author also provides comments on their historical development and leads the reader along many interesting paths. In addition, there are theorems from analysis: as stated before, the transcendence of the numbers pi and e, the fact that the complex numbers form an algebraically closed field, and also Puiseux's theorem that shows how one can parametrize the roots of polynomial equations, the coefficients of which are allowed to vary. There are exercises at the end of each chapter, varying in degree from easy to difficult. To make the book more lively, the author has incorporated pictures from the history of mathematics, including scans of mathematical stamps and pictures of mathematicians.
