Laser Resonators and Beam Propagation : Fundamentals, Advanced Concepts, Applications

Optical Resonators provides a detailed discussion of the properties of optical resonators for lasers from basic theory to recent research. In addition to describing the fundamental theories of resonators such as geometrical optics, diffraction, and polarisation the characteristics of all important resonator schemes and their calculation are presented. Experimental examples, practical problems and a collection of measurement techniques support the comprehensive treatment of the subject. Optical Resonators is the only book currently available that provides a comprehensive overview of the the subject. Combined with the structure of the text and the autonomous nature of the chapters this work will be as suitable for those new to the field as it will be invaluable to specialists conducting research. This second edition has been enlarged by new sections on Q-switching and resonators with internal phase/amplitude control. In addition, the whole book has been brought up-to-date.

Laser in restorative dentistry

The application of lasers in restorative dentistry has revolutionized dental treatments, offering enhanced precision, reduced discomfort, and improved clinical outcomes. Lasers have become a valuable tool in procedures such as cavity preparation, caries removal, tooth whitening, and composite resin curing. Their ability to selectively target diseased tissue while preserving healthy structures minimizes trauma and promotes faster healing. Moreover, lasers offer a less invasive alternative to traditional mechanical methods, often eliminating the need for anesthesia. This technology's versatility allows for its use in both hard and soft tissue treatments, including gingival recontouring and managing peri-implant diseases. As laser technology continues to advance, its integration into restorative dental practices offers significant potential for improved patient care, greater procedural efficiency, and long-term durability of restorations. Future developments in laser applications are expected to expand their role, making them an indispensable asset in modern dentistry.

Comparison of scalpel and lasers technique in the treatment of gingival melanin pigmentation

Gingival hyperpigmentation is a common esthetical concern in patients with gummy smile or excessive gingival display. Laser ablation has been recognized recently as the most effective, pleasant and reliable technique. It has the advantage of easy handling, short treatment time, hemostasis, decontamination, and sterilization effect. The objective of this study is to evaluate and compare scalpel and lasers techniques for gingival depigmentation and to evaluate their effect on re pigmentation.

Biophotonics

More profound understanding of the nature of light and light-matter interactions in biology has enabled many applications in the biology and medical fields. So a new discipline is born, namely biophotonics. The aim of this book is to review the current state-of-the-art of the field by means of authoritative chapters written by the world leaders of the respective fields. Biosensors, biochips, optical tomography, optical microsurgery, photodynamics therapy, bioactivation of gene, photobiology of skin, and nanobiophotonics are each introduced and recent advances presented. This book will be useful not only to physicians, biologists, physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and engineers but also to graduate students who are interested in these rapidly developing fields.

Atoms, molecules and photons : An introduction to atomic- molecular- and quantum physics

This introduction to Atomic and Molecular Physics explains how our present model of atoms and molecules has been developed over the last two centuries both by many experimental discoveries and, from the theoretical side, by the introduction of quantum physics to the adequate description of micro-particles. It illustrates the wave model of particles by many examples and shows the limits of classical description. The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with atoms and molecules and its potential for spectroscopy is outlined in more detail and in particular lasers as modern spectroscopic tools are discussed more thoroughly. Many examples and problems with solutions are offered to encourage readers to actively engage in experimentation.

Applied Charged Particle Optics

Authored by a pioneer of the field, this overview of charged particle optics provides a solid introduction to the field for all physicists wishing to design their own apparatus or better understand the instruments with which they work. Applied Charged Particle Optics begins by introducing electrostatic lenses and fields used for acceleration, focussing and deflection of ions or electrons. Subsequent chapters give detailed descriptions of electrostatic deflection elements, uniform and non-uniform magnetic sector fields, image aberrations, and, finally, fringe field confinement. A chapter on applications is added.

Aerosol Optics : Light Absorption and Scattering by Particles in the Atmosphere

Provides a comprehensive review of available techniques for the remote sensing of aerosols. Although mostly satellite remote sensing is considered, ground-based techniques are also discussed.describes techniques for the determination of the column concentration of aerosol particles and their optical sizing using spaceborne optical instrumentation. The majority of the techniques described in this book use a so-called "library method". This method relies upon the precalculated top-of-atmosphere reflectances (TOAR) for vaious atmospheric aerosol types. The comparison of measured and calculated TOARS allows one to characterize the optically-equivalent aerosol state.
