Innovative Internet Community Systems ; Vol. 3908 ; 5th International Workshop, IICS 2005, Paris, France, June 20-22, 2005. Revised Papers
Traditionally, there are topics discussed in three main aspects. All of them must be considered in a united manner in order to investigate and understand the emergence and evolution of communities in the Internet: knowledge about networking, content and text processing as well as theory. The goal of the I2CS workshop is to bring researchers from both industry and academic fields together to discuss current progress and future developments in these areas and to eliminate the gap between theory and application. At this point, we want to express immense gratitude to all the authors of the submitted papers and to the members of the international Program Committee for their contribution to the success of the event and a program of high quality. In a peer-to-peer review process, 17 papers were selected out of 27 submissions.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed postproceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Innovative Internet Community Systems, IICS 2004, held in Guadalajara, Mexico, in June 2004. The 25 revised full papers presented together with 2 invited papers have been carefully reviewed. They focus mainly on system-oriented problems, text processing, and theoretical foundations of distributed and Internet systems. They also deal with speed and quality-of-service problems of Internet protocols, aspects of cooperation and collaboration in Internet systems, as well as agent and text-processing-based methods. In addition, 9 papers stem from two mini-workshops, one on computational epidemiology and the other on optimization of urban traffic systems.
Innovative Endocrinology of Cancer
Deals with developments in such topics as mechanisms of hormonal carcinogenesis, epidemiology and risk factors, hormone production by tumor tissue and hormonal sensitivity of the latter, genesis, dichotomy and endocrinology of cancer in females, and pharmacogenomics and proteomics in oncoendocrinology.
Infectious disease : A very short introduction
Provides a conceptual framework for thinking about disease. Ecology and evolution provide the keys to answering the ‘where’ / ‘why’ / ‘how’ / and ‘what’ questions about any particular infectious disease: where did it come from? How is it transmitted from one person to another / and why are some individuals more susceptible than others? What biochemical / ecological / and evolutionary strategies can be used to combat the disease? Is it more effective to block transmission at the population level / or to block infection at the individual level? Through a series of case studies / Benjamin Bolker and Marta L. Wayne introduce the major ideas of infectious disease in a clear and thoughtful way / emphasizing the general principles of infection / the management of outbreaks / and the evolutionary and ecological approaches that are now central to much research about infectious disease.
In vivo Models of HIV Disease and Control
An AIDS vaccine is still elusive and HIV treatment continues to develop multidrug resistance at alarming rates. Because of the similarities between HIV and immune deficiency infections in a variety of animals, it is only natural that scientists use these animals as models to study pathogenesis, treatment, vaccine development and many other aspects of HIV. Part of the series Infectious Agents and Pathogenesis, this volume reviews the immune deficiency virus in a variety of hosts. Pathogenesis, vaccine and drug development, epidemiology, and the natural history of the monkey, mouse, cat, cow, horse, and other animal viruses are detailed and compared to HIV. Also included are chapters on the history and future of animal models, as well as a chapter on ethical and safety considerations in using animal models for AIDS studies.

There are now almost a dozen oral interferon-free direct-acting antivirals available for the treatment of hepatitis C virus infection. Despite advances in the treatment of HCV, therapeutic gaps remain that are yet to be fully explored.
