Problems of High Altitude Medicine and Biology

The major characteristic pathological findings of pulmonary vascular remodelling are increased wall thickening of pulmonary vessels and mus- larization of small arteries. In laboratory animals, decreased ambient oxygen concentrations cause similar pathological findings, including pulmonary smooth muscle hypertrophy and proliferation [22,23]. It has been suggested that proliferation of pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMC) is a key component of pulmonary vascular remodelling, and several in vitro studies have also addressed that exposure to hypoxia can stimulate prolife- tion of PASMC [13,4,1]. The proliferation of the PASMC begins when the cells enter into the cell cycle.

Problems in Algebraic Number Theory

The book covers topics ranging from elementary number theory (such as the unique factorization of integers or Fermat's little theorem) to Dirichlet's theorem about primes in arithmetic progressions and his class number formula for quadratic fields, and it treats standard material such as Dedekind domains, integral bases, the decomposition of primes not dividing the index, the class group, the Minkowski bound and Dirichlet's unit theorem .

Problems and Theorems in Classical Set Theory

This is the first comprehensive collection of problems in set theory. Most of classical set theory is covered, classical in the sense that independence methods are not used, but classical also in the sense that most results come from the period between 1920-1970. Many problems are also related to other fields of mathematics such as algebra, combinatorics, topology and real analysis. The authors choose not to concentrate on the axiomatic framework, although some aspects are elaborated (axiom of foundation and the axiom of choice). Rather than using drill exercises, most problems are challenging and require work, wit, and inspiration. The problems are organized in a way that earlier problems help in the solution of later ones. For many problems, the authors trace the origin and provide proper references at the end of the solution.

Problemi di Fisica = Physics Problems

The introduction of three-year degrees has in many cases forced teachers to drastically reduce the number of teaching hours and therefore the extension of the Physics course programs. In this booklet the author has proposed to present briefly but with the greatest possible rigor the course of General Physics I avoiding the demonstrations of physical laws, but giving priority to the applications of these laws and to the carrying out of exercises that are generally neglected. in many courses.

Problematic Soils : Proceedings of the Symposium held at the Nottingham Trent University on 8 November 2001

Problematic soils brings together in one volume a collection of papers presented at the Problematic Soils symposium, organised by East Midlands Geotechnical Group of the Institution of Civil Engineers. The papers discuss the behaviour and characteristics of problematic soils (particularly those found in the UK), and they also offer guidance on possible treatment techniques that could be applied for their successful engineering. The proceedings of this symposium are split into three sections.

Problem Solving with C++

Written for the beginning programmer. The text cultivates strong problem-solving skills and programming techniques as it introduces readers to the C++ programming language. Author Walt Savitch’s approach to programming emphasizes active reading through the use of well-placed examples and self-tests, while flexible coverage means the order of chapters and sections can easily be adapted without sacrificing continuity. Savitch’s clear, concise style is a hallmark feature of the text and is supported by a suite of tried-and-true pedagogical tools. The 10th Edition includes ten new Programming Projects, along with new discussions and revisions.

Problem Solving nelle organizzazioni : Idee, metodi e strumenti da Mosè a Mintzberg : Piccola antologia filosofica per managers e project managers = Problem solving in organizations : Ideas, methods, and tools from Moses to Mintzberg : A Small philosophical anthology for managers and project managers

Shows that many methods for solving organizational problems (both corporate and otherwise) are based on premises drawn, even unknowingly, from philosophy, mathematics, and even from systems thinking clearly evident in philosophers ante litteram. The examples are numerous and span the entire history of human culture.

Problem Solving in Mathematics Education

Reviews four interrelated areas: (i) the relevance of heuristics in problem-solving approaches – why they are important and what research tells us about their use; (ii) the need to characterize and foster creative problem-solving approaches – what type of heuristics helps learners devise and practice creative solutions; (iii) the importance that learners formulate and pursue their own problems; and iv) the role played by the use of both multiple-purpose and ad hoc mathematical action types of technologies in problem-solving contexts – what ways of reasoning learners construct when they rely on the use of digital technologies, and how technology and technology approaches can be reconciled.

Problem Book in Quantum Field Theory

The Problem Book in Quantum Field Theory contains about 200 problems with solutions or hints that help students to improve their understanding and develop skills necessary for pursuing the subject. It deals with the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations, classical field theory, canonical quantization of scalar, Dirac and electromagnetic fields, the processes in the lowest order of perturbation theory, renormalization and regularization. The solutions are presented in a systematic and complete manner. The material covered and the level of exposition make the book appropriate for graduate and undergraduate students in physics, as well as for teachers and researchers. The new edition is a corrected paperback edition for students.

Probiotics for better future

Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. Health benefits have mainly been demonstrated for specific probiotic strains of the following genera: Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Saccharomyces, Enterococcus, Streptoc occus, Pediococcus, Leuconostoc, Bacillus, Escherichia coli. The human microbiota is getting a lot of attention today and research has already demonstrated that alteration of this microbiota may have far-reaching consequences. One of the possible routes for correcting dysbiosis...

Probability Theory : A Comprehensive Course

Probabilistic concepts play an increasingly important role in mathematics, physics, biology, financial engineering and computer science. They help us to understand magnetism, amorphous media, genetic diversity and the perils of random developments on the financial markets, and they guide us in constructing more efficient algorithms. This text is a comprehensive course in modern probability theory and its measure-theoretical foundations.

Probability Models for DNA Sequence Evolution

This is the second edition and is twice the size of the first one. The material on recombination and the stepping stone model have been greatly expanded, there are many results form the last five years, and two new chapters on diffusion processes develop that viewpoint. This book is written for mathematicians and for biologists alike. No previous knowledge of concepts from biology is assumed, and only a basic knowledge of probability, including some familiarity with Markov chains and Poisson processes. The book has been restructured into a large number of subsections and written in a theorem-proof style, to more clearly highlight the main results and allow readers to find the results they need and to skip the proofs if they desire.

Probability in electrical engineering and computer science : An application-driven course

This revised textbook motivates and illustrates the techniques of applied probability by applications in electrical engineering and computer science (EECS). The author presents information processing and communication systems that use algorithms based on probabilistic models and techniques, including web searches, digital links, speech recognition, GPS, route planning, recommendation systems, classification, and estimation. He then explains how these applications work and, along the way, provides the readers with the understanding of the key concepts and methods of applied probability. Python labs enable the readers to experiment and consolidate their understanding. The book includes homework, solutions, and Jupyter notebooks. This edition includes new topics such as Boosting, Multi-armed bandits, statistical tests, social networks, queuing networks, and neural networks. The companion website now has many examples of Python demos and also Python labs used in Berkeley.

Probability and Risk Analysis : An Introduction for Engineers

This book presents notions and ideas from the foundations of a statistical treatment of risks. Bayesian methods are frequently used in that area, hence a reasonable proportion of the presentation is devoted to such approaches. Modern statistical tools, namely Poisson regression, analysis of deviance, extreme-value theory and threshold methods are also used to identify and solve practical problems. The knowledge of such tools facilitates the understanding of the role of probability in risk analysis and proper use of outputs given by software packages.
