Service Science, Management and Engineering : Education for the 21st Century

Increasingly, academic and industrial leaders are recognizing that college graduates need new skills to address business and technical issues in a service business environment. Because services depend critically on people working together and with technology to provide value for others, these new skills include the ability to integrate across traditional disciplinary areas to obtain globally effective solutions. Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME) is one such approach to properly focusing education and research on services, and to preparing tomorrow’s graduates to work in an expanding services economy.

Service Availability ; 4th International Service Availability Symposium, ISAS 2007, Durham, NH, USA, May 21-22, 2007, Proceedings

Program Chairs’ Message th The 4 International Service Availability Symposium (ISAS 2007) continued with the tradition of its predecessors by bringing together researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry to address the problems of service availability. The unique characteristic of a strong academic and industrial partnership was vividly - flected in this year’s event, from the Organizing Committee to the contributions and the participants. Recognizing the value of broadening the scope of ISAS 2007, we included new topic areas that cover model-driven design and human factors. We received a total of 25 submissions, each of which was thoroughly reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee. Due to the limited time allocated for the symposium, many worthwhile manuscripts unfortunately did not make it into the final program.

Sensors data processing using machine learning

Collects research focusing on data processing using machine learning and deep learning. We invited investigators to contribute both original and review articles, covering the research and development in the areas of data processing using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL). These areas include solutions that are designed for smart devices. In this reprint, leading experts in the field share their insights, research findings, and visions for the future. Together, we embark on a journey to unlock the potential of effective data processing that involves transforming data from a given format into a more usable and desirable form, rendering them more meaningful and informative. Machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), and artificial intelligence (AI) have proven to be effective methods for this purpose. Through the utilization of machine learning algorithms, mathematical modeling, or various statistical techniques, the entire process can be automated.

Sensors : Advancements in Modeling, Design Issues, Fabrication and Practical Applications

Sensors are the most important component in any system and engineers in any field need to understand the fundamentals of how these components work, how to select them properly and how to integrate them into an overall system. This book has outlined the fundamentals, analytical concepts, modelling and design issues, technical details and practical applications of different types of sensors, electromagnetic, capacitive, ultrasonic, vision, Terahertz, displacement, fibre-optic and so on. The book addresses the identification, modeling, selection, operation and integration of a wide variety of sensors, demonstrates the concepts of different sensors technology through simulation, design and real implementations, discusses the design and fabrication of high performance modern sensors technology, presents a selection of cutting-edge applications.

Semiparametric Modeling of Implied Volatility

Fills a gap in the financial literature by bringing together both recent advances in the theory of implied volatility and refined semiparametric estimation strategies and dimension reduction methods for functional surfaces. The book introduces Nadaraya-Watson, local polynomial and least squares kernel smoothing, and dimension reduction methods such as common principle components, functional principle components models and dynamic semiparametric factor models. Throughout, most methods are illustrated with empirical investigations, simulations and pictures.

Semi-Markov Risk Models for Finance, Insurance and Reliability

This book presents applications of semi-Markov processes in finance, insurance and reliability, using real-life problems as examples. After a presentation of the main probabilistic tools necessary for understanding of the book, the authors show how to apply semi-Markov processes in finance, starting from the axiomatic definition and continuing eventually to the most advanced financial tools, particularly in insurance and in risk-and-ruin theories. Also considered are reliability problems that interact with credit risk theory in finance.

Semantic Web Services, Processes and Applications

Semantic Web Services, Processes and Applications brings contributions from researchers who study, explore and understand the semantic enabling of all phases of semantic Web processes. This encompasses design, annotation, discovery, choreography and composition. Also this book presents fundamental capabilities and techniques associated with ontological modeling or services, annotation, matching and mapping, and reasoning. This is complemented by discussion of applications in e-Government and bioinformatics. Semantic Web Services, Processes and Applications is structured for research scientists and graduate-level students in computer science, as well as practitioners in industry.

Semantic Web and Peer-to-Peer : Decentralized Management and Exchange of Knowledge and Information

Staab and Stuckenschmidt structured the selected contributions into four parts: Part I, "Data Storage and Access", prepares the semantic foundation, i.e. data modelling and querying in a flexible and yet scalable manner. These foundations allow for dealing with the organization of information at the individual peers. Part II, "Querying the Network", considers the routing of queries, as well as continuous queries and personalized queries under the conditions of the permanently changing topological structure of a peer-to-peer network. Part III, "Semantic Integration", deals with the mapping of heterogeneous data representations. Finally Part IV, "Methodology and Systems", reports experiences from case studies and sample applications. The overall result is a state-of-the-art description of the potential of Semantic Web and peer-to-peer technologies for information sharing and knowledge management when applied jointly.

Semantic Web and Education

The first section of Semantic Web and Education surveys the basic aspects and features of the Semantic Web. After this basic review, the book turns its focus to its primary topic of how Semantic Web developments can be used to build attractive and more successful education applications. Self-healing construction materials : Fundamentals, monitoring and large scale applications

Provides a thorough overview of all techniques for producing self-healing construction materials. Construction materials (cement-based, bituminous, metals, and alloys) are prone to cracking, which with the progress of time can lead to compromising of the structural integrity of critical infrastructure. Self-healing materials form a new class of materials that have inbuilt engineered properties to counteract damage and repair it before it becomes critical. The methods for monitoring, modeling, and assessing self-healing are also reviewed. The final section of the book discusses the future outlook and potential extension of self-healing concepts to other materials (e.g., heritage structures and soils).

Selected Topics in Cancer Modeling : Genesis, Evolution, Immune Competition, and Therapy

A major challenge in the modeling and simulation of tumor growth is the mathematical description of living matter, which is far more complex than a mathematical description of inert matter. One critical piece of this challenge is creating multiscale models that take into account subcellular, cellular, and macroscopic levels of cancer. The complexity of these different levels requires the development of new mathematical methods and ideas, which are examined in this work. Written by first-rate researchers in the field of mathematical biology, this collection of selected chapters offers a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art mathematical methods and tools for modeling and analyzing cancer phenomena.
