Patterns of Change : Linguistic Innovations in the Development of Classical Mathematics
Offers a reconstruction of linguistic innovations in the history of mathematics; innovations which changed the ways in which mathematics was done, understood and philosophically interpreted. It argues that there are at least three ways in which the language of mathematics has been changed throughout its history, thus determining the lines of development that mathematics has followed. One of these patterns of change, called a re-coding, generates two developmental lines. The first of them connecting arithmetic, algebra, differential and integral calculus and predicate calculus led to a gradual increase of the power of our calculating tools, turning difficult problems of the past into easy exercises. The second developmental line connecting synthetic geometry, analytic geometry, fractal geometry, and set theory led to a sophistication of the ways we construct geometrical objects, altering our perception of form and increasing our sensitivity to complex visual patterns.

Parameter Setting in Evolutionary Algorithms
One of the main difficulties of applying an evolutionary algorithm (or, as a matter of fact, any heuristic method) to a given problem is to decide on an appropriate set of parameter values. Typically these are specified before the algorithm is run and include population size, selection rate, operator probabilities, not to mention the representation and the operators themselves. This book gives the reader a solid perspective on the different approaches that have been proposed to automate control of these parameters as well as understanding their interactions. The book covers a broad area of evolutionary computation, including genetic algorithms, evolution strategies, genetic programming, estimation of distribution algorithms, and also discusses the issues of specific parameters used in parallel implementations, multi-objective evolutionary algorithms, and practical consideration for real-world applications. It is a recommended read for researchers and practitioners of evolutionary computation and heuristic methods.

Parallel Problem Solving from Nature - PPSN IX ; 9th International Conference, Reykjavik, Iceland, September 9-13, 2006, Proceedings
We received 255 paper submissions this year. After an extensive peer review process involving more than 1000 reviews, the programme committee selected the top 106 papers for inclusion in this volume and, of course, for presentation at the conference. This represents an acceptance rate of 42%. The papers included in this volume cover a wide range of topics, from e- lutionary computation to swarm intelligence and from bio-inspired computing to real-world applications. They represent some of the latest and best research in evolutionary and natural computation. Following the PPSN tradition, all - pers at PPSN IX were presented as posters. There were 7 sessions: each session consisting of around 15 papers. For each session, we covered as wide a range of topics as possible so that participants with di?erent interests could ?nd some relevant papers in every session.

Ossigenoterapia domiciliare a lungo termine in Italia : Il valore aggiunto della telemedicina = Long-term home oxygen therapy in Italy : The added value of telemedicine
The development of new therapeutic strategies and the minimization of direct and indirect costs are fundamental objectives in the management of chronic diseases, especially when they are characterized by a high degree of disability. This volume describes the evolution of intervention strategies in the home management of chronic respiratory failure in Italy from the late 1980s to today: numerous topics are explored, including epidemiology, complications, oxygen delivery systems and interfaces, the patient-caregiver relationship and the various aspects relating to the economic impact of the disease. In particular, the most recent trends in telemedicine are analyzed, considered the strategy of the future in the field of respiratory medicine and especially in the management of patients in home oxygen therapy. The various chapters also report the most recent data on the role of nursing and on the quality of life of chronic respiratory patients at home, also taking into consideration the expectations of individual patients, their families and their doctors. Finally, both the socio-economic impact of the telematic management of these patients and the aspects related to the quality pathways in long-term telemetry home oxygen therapy were taken into consideration.

Optimization with Multivalued Mappings : Theory, Applications and Algorithms
In the field of nondifferentiable nonconvex optimization, one of the most intensely investigated areas is that of optimization problems involving multivalued mappings in constraints or as the objective function. This book focuses on the tremendous development in the field that has taken place since the publication of the most recent volumes on the subject. The new topics studied include the formulation of optimality conditions using different kinds of generalized derivatives for set-valued mappings (such as, for example, the coderivative of Mordukhovich), the opening of new applications (e.g., the calibration of water supply systems), or the elaboration of new solution algorithms (e.g., smoothing methods). The book is divided into three parts. The focus in the first part is on bilevel programming. The chapters in the second part contain investigations of mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints. The third part is on multivalued set-valued optimization. The chapters were written by outstanding experts in the areas of bilevel programming, mathematical programs with equilibrium (or complementarity) constraints (MPEC), and set-valued optimization problems.
Optimization in Economics and Finance : Some Advances in Non-Linear, Dynamic, Multi-Criteria and Stochastic Models
Optimization in Economics and Finance extends and improves the usual optimization techniques, in a form that may be adopted for modeling social choice problems. Problems discussed include: when is an optimum reached; when is it unique; relaxation of the conventional convex (or concave) assumptions on an economic model; associated mathematical concepts such as invex and quasimax; multiobjective optimal control models; and related computational methods and programs. These techniques are applied to economic growth models (including small stochastic perturbations), finance and financial investment models (and the interaction between financial and production variables), modeling sustainability over long time horizons, boundary (transversality) conditions, and models with several conflicting objectives. Although the applications are general and illustrative, the models in this book provide examples of possible models for a society's social choice for an allocation that maximizes welfare and utilization of resources. As well as using existing computer programs for optimization of models, a new computer program, named SCOM, is presented in this book for computing social choice models by optimal control.
Optimization and Control of Bilinear Systems : Theory, Algorithms, and Applications
The purpose of this book is to acquaint the reader with the developments in bilinear systems theory and its applications. Bilinear systems can be used to represent a wide range of physical, chemical, biological, and social systems, as well as manufacturing processes, which cannot be effectively modeled under the assumption of linearity. This book provides a unified approach for the identification and control of nonlinear complex objects that can be transformed into bilinear systems, with a focus on the control of open physical processes functioning in a non-equilibrium mode.
Optimisation in Computational Fluid Dynamics
The numerical optimization of practical applications is an issue of growing importance in research and industry. It allows both the exploration of non-trivial configurations differing widely from all known solutions and the step-by-step improvement of existing designs. The purpose of this book is to introduce the state of the art concerning this issue, referred to in the book as CFD-based Optimization (CFD-O). Many complementary applications are presented, so that interested researchers and engineers will get a clear view of the present possibilities for all problems where the numerical optimization process relies on evaluations obtained through Computational Fluid Dynamics.
Optimisation et contrôle stochastique appliqués à la finance = Optimization and stochastic control applied to finance
The objective and the originality of this book is to present the different aspects and methods used in the resolution of stochastic optimization problems with a view to more specific applications in finance: portfolio management, option hedging, optimal investment. . We have included some recent developments on the subject without seeking a priori the greatest generality. We wanted a gradual exposure of mathematical methods by first presenting the intuitive ideas and then precisely stating the results with full and detailed proofs.
