Singularities in Gravitational Systems : Applications to Chaotic Transport in the Solar System

Chaos theory plays an important role in modern physics and related sciences, but -, the most important results so far have been obtained in the study of gravitational systems applied to celestial mechanics. The present set of lectures introduces the mathematical methods used in the theory of singularities in gravitational systems, reviews modeling techniques for the simulation of close encounters and presents the state of the art about the study of diffusion of comets, wandering asteroids, meteors and planetary ring particles.

Single Cell Based Models in Biology and Medicine

The aim of this book is to assemble a collection of different mathematical and computational models and techniques that focus on individual cells, cell processes and cell behaviour, that are also suitable to address problems on the multi-cellular or tissue scale. We would like to focus the level of the book equally to students starting their research in the field of mathematical biology and to scientists already modelling multi-cellular processes. Therefore, our intention is to include in this book a detailed description of each model and an extensive review of suitable biological and medical applications.

Simulation-based Algorithms for Markov Decision Processes

Markov decision process (MDP) models are widely used for modeling sequential decision-making problems that arise in engineering, economics, computer science, and the social sciences. It is well-known that many real-world problems modeled by MDPs have huge state and/or action spaces, leading to the notorious curse of dimensionality that makes practical solution of the resulting models intractable. In other cases, the system of interest is complex enough that it is not feasible to specify some of the MDP model parameters explicitly, but simulation samples are readily available (e.g., for random transitions and costs). For these settings, various sampling and population-based numerical algorithms have been developed recently to overcome the difficulties of computing an optimal solution in terms of a policy and/or value function.

Simulation of semiconductor processes and devices 2007 ; 12th International Conference on simulation of semiconductor processes and devices SISPAD 2007 ; TU Wien, Vienna, Austria

The first SISPAD conference took place in Tokyo in 1996 as the successor to three preceding conferences NUPAD, VPAD, and SISDEP. With its longstanding history SISPAD provides a world-wide forum for the presenta tion and discussion of outstanding recent advances and developments in the field of numerical process and device simulation. Driven by the ongoing miniaturization in semiconductor fabrication technology, the variety of topics discussed at this meeting reflects the ever-growing complexity of the subject. Apart from the classic topics like process, device, and interconnect simulation, mesh generation, a broad spec trum of numerical issues, and compact modeling, new simulation approaches like atomistic and first-principles methods have emerged as important fields of research and are currently making their way into standard TCAD suites.

Simulation Approaches in Transportation Analysis : Recent Advances and Challenges

Focuses on the latest advanced research on modeling as well as applications of transport simulation, including simulation of vehicle movements on the road, dynamic simulation of traffic flow on transport networks, and simulation of the movement of people in an urban area. Models from the three continents of Europe, North America, and Asia are discussed in detail. Research issues and future directions of transport simulation development are systematically addressed. It is the first book to thoroughly discuss global developments and the broad issues of transport simulation. The book will be useful for researchers and graduate students to understand the application of simulation in transport analysis and future research needs. Practitioners will find the book useful for practical issues such as the applicability of simulation methods, their reproducibility, and output interpretation.

Simulation : Pragmatic Constructions of Reality

Examines the historical roots and evolution of simulation from an epistemological, institutional and technical perspective. Rich case studies go far beyond documentation of simulation’s capacity for application in many domains, they also explore the "functional" and "structural" debate that continues to traverse simulation thought and action. One here asks if simulation deeply transforms science, or instead constitutes a limited tool that principally extends the repertory of erstwhile practice. Does simulation comprise a novel form of experiment, or rather operate as a mechanism which extends standing forms of experimentation? What are simulation’s relations with models or theory, for example These studies further query to what extent and in what ways simulation may be regarded as a discipline, a special species of instrument, or as transdisciplinary.

Shape Analysis and Structuring

Several techniques have been developed in the literature for processing different aspects of the geometry of shapes, for representing and manipulating a shape at different levels of detail, and for describing a shape at a structural level as a concise, part-based, or iconic model. Such techniques are used in many different contexts, such as industrial design, biomedical applications, entertainment, environmental monitoring, or cultural heritage. This book covers a variety of topics related to preserving and enhancing shape information at a geometric level, and to effectively capturing the structure of a shape by identifying relevant shape components and their mutual relationships.

Service-oriented computing – ICSOC 2005 ; 3rd International Conference, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, December 12-15, 2005, Proceedings

The 2005 edition had the important and ambitious goal of bringing together the different communities working in Web services and service-oriented computing. By attracting excellent contributions from different scientific communities, ICSOC aims at creating a scientific venue where participants can share ideas and compare their approaches to tackling the many still-open common research challenges. The commitment to cross-area fertilization was put into practice by having a very diversified Program Committee and by the presence of several area coordinators, leaders in the respective communities who encouraged and supervised submissions in each area.
