Speaker Classification II : Selected Papers

Constitutes a state-of-the-art survey for the field of speaker classification. It approaches the following questions: What characteristics of the speaker become manifest in his or her voice and speaking behavior? Which of them can be inferred from analyzing the acoustic realizations? What can this information be used for? Which methods are the most suitable for diversified problems in this area of research? How should the quality of the results be evaluated?

Spanish Economic Growth, 1850–2015

This text offers a comprehensive and nuanced view of the economic development of Spain since 1850. It provides a new set of historical GDP estimates for Spain from the demand and supply sides, and presents a reconstruction of production and expenditure series for the century prior to the introduction of modern national accounts. The author splices available national accounts sets over the period 1958–2015 through interpolation, as an alternative to conventional retropolation. The resulting national accounts series are linked to the historical estimates providing yearly series for GDP and its components since 1850.

Space Exploration 2008

Provides a yearly update on recent space launches, missions and results, to be published every September. The annual will cover space exploration from a variety of angles, looking back at past missions, reviewing those currently under way and detailing those planned for the future, and encompassing both manned and unmanned spaceflight. The invited contributions, authored by leading figures in astronomy and space exploration and which make up the bulk of the annual each year, will cover a variety of topics and are written to appeal to a wide readership. One feature introduced in the first volume ‘Solar System Log’ featuring the very latest in the exploration of the planets, their moons and small Solar System bodies, will be retained for Space Exploration 2008, and will comprise seven chapters. In addition, there will be a special additional section entitled, ‘Return to the Moon’ containing three chapters.

South-North Migration of EU Citizens in Times of Crisis

Identifies the scale and nature of this new Southern European emigration and examines these migrants’ socio-economic integration in Northern European destination countries. This is achieved through an analysis of the most recent data on flows and profiles of this new labour force using sending-country and receiving-country databases. Second, it looks at the politics and policies of immigration, both from the perspective of the sending- and receiving-countries.

Solidarity in Europe : Citizens' Responses in Times of Crisis

Provides evidence-based knowledge on European solidarity and citizen responses in times of crisis. Does the crisis of European integration translate into a crisis of European solidarity, and if yes, what are the manifestations at the level of individual citizens? How strongly is solidarity rooted at the individual level, both in terms of attitudes and practices? And which driving factors and mechanisms contribute to the reproduction and/or corrosion of solidarity in times of crisis? Using findings from the EU Horizon 2020 funded research project “European paths to transnational solidarity at times of crisis: Conditions, forms, role-models and policy responses” (TransSOL), the books addresses these questions and provides cross-national comparisons of eight European countries – Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, and the UK. It will appeal to students, scholars and policymakers interested in the Eurocrisis, politics and sociology.

Sol-Gel Methods for Materials Processing ; Focusing on Materials for Pollution Control, Water Purification, and Soil Remediation

In this volume several contributions from invited speakers and participants at the NATO advanced research workshop on "Sol-gel approaches to materials for pollution control, water purification and soil remediation", which has been held in Kiev, Ukraine on October 2007, are reported. The book offers a wide and updated overview of the most advanced sol-gel methods for materials processing and at the same time presents several case studies concerning possible solutions for environmental issues.

Solder Joint Technology : Materials, Properties, and Reliability

Solder joints are ubiquitous in electronic consumer products. The European Union has a directive to ban the use of Pb-based solders in these products on July 1st, 2006. There is an urgent need for an increase in the research and development of Pb-free solders in electronic manufacturing. For example, spontaneous Sn whisker growth and electromigration induced failure in solder joints are serious issues. These reliability issues are quite complicated due to the combined effect of electrical, mechanical, chemical, and thermal forces on solder joints. To improve solder joint reliability, the science of solder joint behavior under various driving forces must be understood. In this book, the advanced materials reliability issues related to copper-tin reaction and electromigration in solder joints are emphasized and methods to prevent these reliability problems are discussed.

Solar Desalination for the 21st Century : A Review of Modern Technologies and Researches on Desalination Coupled to Renewable Energies

The countries affected by water scarcity are found in the African, Asian, European and American continents, and also are on the southern and eastern coasts of the Mediterranean Sea. Severe drought usually generates a general malaise in populations which are already affected by a number of social and poverty problems, which often lead to significant and uncontrolled emigration towards richer countries, especially if one takes into account the increasing economic and lifestyle gap between north and south Mediterranean countries.

Soils of Volcanic Regions in Europe

Soils of volcanic areas often exhibit unique properties differentiating them from other soils on Earth. This publication compiles information gained by an EU research network over six years of research on European volcanic soils. The book gives comprehensive coverage of soils in volcanic regions within Europe, dealing with most aspects of modern day soil science. New methodology is introduced and the synthesis of the research casts a new light on soils with andic soil properties. It covers a range of issues such as mineralogy, chemistry, physics, biology, soil genesis, classification, land use and pollution.

Software Quality — ECSQ 2002 ; Quality Connection - 7th European Conference on Software Quality, Helsinki, Finland, June 9-13, 2002. Proceedings

We have selected two themes for this conference . Our ?rst theme, “production of attractive and reliable software at Internet speed” sums up the dilemma many software organisations face. In order to be competitive, software should contain advanced features and run reliably – yet it should be developed quickly and cost e?ectively for the right market window. Finding the right balance between these objectives is a critical question that will determine business success in the years to come. Our second theme, “production of software with a dynamic partnership n- work” highlights the current trend of using partnerships and subcontractors as integral players in the software development process. Partnerships sometimes need to be created quickly to respond to a market opportunity, yet the costs and speed of cooperation must be competitive.

Software Product Lines : Research Issues in Engineering and Management

Between July 1999 and June 2005 a group of European companies, research institutes, and universities executed the EUREKA-ITEA projects ESAPS, CAFÉ, and FAMILIES on the topic of product line engineering. The projects originated from the need of the industry to improve software engineering performance by organizing product development in product lines. The results obtained within the projects have been implemented in several large industries (e.g., automotive, e-business, medical systems, and mobile phones). They involve a radical shift in software construction and production. The most important research results of the projects are collected in this book.
