Ghrelin more than hunger hormone

Ghrelin is a stomach hormone that acts as an endogenous ligand of orphan G-protein-coupled receptor. Ghrelin is a 28-amino acid peptide existing in two major forms: n-octanoyl-modified ghrelin, which possesses an n-octanoyl modification on serine-3 and des-acyl ghrelin. Fatty acid modification of ghrelin is essential for ghrelin-induced growth hormone release from the pituitary and appetite stimulation. This acyl-modification of ghrelin is catalysed by ghrelin-O- acyl transferase recently identified.

German Mergers & Acquisitions in the USA : Transaction management and success

Mergers and acquisitions in the United States of America are a major strategic means for German companies in their pursuit of becoming global players. The significant volume of such cross-border transactions reflects the firms’ expectations of creating value in the world’s most important consumer market.Bernd Wübben analyzes the success of 87 German mergers and acquisitions in the USA during the period from 1990 to 2004. He begins his assessment with a description of various aspects of the current institutional framework applicable to structuring a cross-border acquisition in the USA. Employing a study of the capital markets’ reaction and a survey of acquirers’ executives.

Geometric Integration Theory

This textbook introduces geometric measure theory through the notion of currents. Currents—continuous linear functionals on spaces of differential forms—are a natural language in which to formulate various types of extremal problems arising in geometry, and can be used to study generalized versions of the Plateau problem and related questions in geometric analysis. Key features of Geometric Integration Theory: * Includes topics on the deformation theorem, the area and coarea formulas, the compactness theorem, the slicing theorem and applications to minimal surfaces * Applies techniques to complex geometry, partial differential equations, harmonic analysis, differential geometry, and many other parts of mathematics

Geometric Data Analysis : From Correspondence Analysis to Structured Data Analysis

Geometric Data Analysis (GDA) is the name suggested by Stanford University to designate the approach to Multivariate Statistics initiated.as Correspondence Analysis, an approach that has become more and more used and appreciated over the years. This book presents the full formalization of GDA in terms of linear algebra - the most original and far-reaching consequential feature of the approach - and shows also how to integrate the standard statistical tools such as Analysis of Variance, including Bayesian methods. Chapter 9, Research Case Studies, is nearly a book in itself; it presents the methodology in action on three extensive applications, one for medicine, one from political science, and one from education (data borrowed from the Stanford computer-based Educational Program for Gifted Youth ). Thus the readership of the book concerns both mathematicians interested in the applications of mathematics, and researchers willing to master an exceptionally powerful approach of statistical data analysis.

Geometric Algebra for Computer Graphics

The first five chapters review the algebras of real numbers, complex numbers, vectors, and quaternions and their associated axioms, together with the geometric conventions employed in analytical geometry. As well as putting geometric algebra into its historical context, John Vince provides chapters on Grassmann’s outer product and Clifford’s geometric product, followed by the application of geometric algebra to reflections, rotations, lines, planes and their intersection. The conformal model is also covered, where a 5D Minkowski space provides an unusual platform for unifying the transforms associated with 3D Euclidean space.

Genetic programming : Theory and practice II

This volume explores the emerging interaction between theory and practice in the cutting-edge, machine learning method of Genetic Programming (GP). The contributions developed from a second workshop at the University of Michigan's Center for the Study of Complex Systems where leading international genetic programming theorists from major universities and active practitioners from leading industries and businesses met to examine how GP theory informs practice and how GP practice impacts GP theory. Chapters include such topics as financial trading rules, industrial statistical model building, population sizing, the roles of structure in problem solving by computer, stock picking, automated design of industrial-strength analog circuits, topological synthesis of robust systems, algorithmic chemistry, supply chain reordering policies, post docking filtering, an evolved antenna for a NASA mission and incident detection on highways.

General ultrasound in the critically ill

General ultrasound in the critically ill describes a bedside tool destined for use by the intensivist and any physician involved in emergencies. It specifically deals with findings of immediate clinical relevance throughout the body. New emergency applications of ultrasound in the abdomen, the vessels, the head and the heart are considered. The major topic, the lung, is extensively discussed. Interventional ultrasound forms part of nearly every chapter. Flow charts simplify daily concerns: acute dyspnea, shock, unexplained fever, etc. The strong points and pitfalls of ultrasound are reviewed. Technical notes are mingled with general considerations. Benefiting from the extensive experience of an intensivist intimately familiar with ultrasound, this book accurately answers most daily problems arising in the critically ill. it offers not only an exhaustive atlas but also a permanent aid to the therapeutic decision. All in all, General ultrasound in the critically ill provides a key for practicing a kind of visual medicine. Since 1990 Daniel Lichtenstein has been an intensivist in a medical ICU which already occupied a pioneering place in echocardiography. He has from the beginning devoted his efforts to the development of general ultrasound. He regularly publishes studies on lung ultrasound, his main topic, in the international literature.

General Relativity

this book is a short and concise exposition of the central ideas of general relativity. Although the original audience was made up of mathematics students, the focus is on the chain of reasoning that leads to the relativistic theory from the analysis of distance and time measurements in the presence of gravity, rather than on the underlying mathematical structure. The geometric ideas - which are central to the understanding of the nature of gravity - are introduced in parallel with the development of the theory, the emphasis being on laying bare how one is led to pseudo-Riemannian geometry through a natural process of reconciliation of special relativity with the equivalence principle.

Gender Innovation and Migration in Switzerland

This book analyses migration and its relation to socio-political transformation in Switzerland. It addresses how migration has made new forms of life possible and shows how this process generated gender innovation in different fields: the changing division of work, the establishment of a nursery infrastructure, access to higher education for women, and the struggle for female suffrage. Seeing society through the lens of migration alters the perspective from which our past and thus our present is told—and our future imagined.

Game Theory and Mutual Misunderstanding : Scientific Dialogues in Five Acts

This book consists of five acts and two interludes, which are all written as dialogues between three main characters and other supporting characters. Each act discusses the epistemological, institutional and methodological foundations of game theory and economics, while using various stories and examples. A featured aspect of those discussions is that many forms of mutual misunderstanding are involved in social situations as well as in those fields themselves. One Japanese traditional comic story called the Konnyaku Mondo is representative and gives hints of how our thought is constrained by incorrect beliefs. Each dialogue critically examines extant theories and common misunderstanding in game theory and economics in order to find possible future developments of those fields.

Galerkin Finite Element Methods for Parabolic Problems

This book provides insight in the mathematics of Galerkin finite element method as applied to parabolic equations. The approach is based on first discretizing in the spatial variables by Galerkin's method, using piecewise polynomial trial functions, and then applying some single step or multistep time stepping method. The concern is stability and error analysis of approximate solutions in various norms, and under various regularity assumptions on the exact solution.
