Talent Development in European Higher Education : Honors programs in the Benelux, Nordic and German-speaking countries

Examines the much-debated question of how to unleash the potential of young people with promising intellectual abilities and motivation. It looks at the increasingly important topic of excellence in education, and the shift in focus towards the provision of programs to support talented students in higher education. It provides a systematic overview of programs for talented students at northern European higher education institutions (HEIs). Starting in the Netherlands, where nearly all HEIs have developed honors programs over the past two decades, the book explores three clusters of countries: the Benelux, the Nordic and the German-speaking countries. For each of these countries, it discusses the local culture towards excellence, the structure of the education system, and the presence of honors programs.

Symbolic Analysis and Reduction of VLSI Circuits

Efficient modeling and reduction of both the passive and active circuits is essential for hierarchical and IP-based reuse design paradigms. Symbolic Analysis and Reducation of VLSI Circuits presents the symbolic approach to the modeling and reduction of both the passive parasitic linear networks and active analog circuits. It reviews classic symbolic analysis methods and presents state-of-art developments for interconnect reduction and the behavioral modeling of active analog circuits. The text includes the most updated discoveries such as Y-Delta transformation and DDD-graph symbolic representation which allow analysis and modeling of much larger circuitry than ever before.

Sustainable Living with Environmental Risks

Modern economic development has accelerated environmental pollution, caused loss of natural habitats, and modified landscapes. These environmental changes have impacted natural systems: water and heat circulation, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity. These changes in natural systems degrade ecosystem services and subsequently increase environmental risks for humans. Environmental risks, therefore, are not only human health risks by pollution, climatic anomalies, and natural disasters, but also degradation of ecosystem services on which most people are relying for their lives. We cannot entirely eliminate the risks, because it is not possible to attain zero impact on the environment, but we need to find a mechanism that minimizes environmental risks for human sustainably. This is the idea of the interdisciplinary framework of “environmental risk management” theory, which advocates harmony between economic development and environmental conservation.

Sustainable leadership practices in promoting a learning organization in the new Syria

Examines the relationship between sustainable leadership practices and organizational learning in private higher education institutions in Syria. Based on the theoretical framework of sustainable leadership, it focuses on five key dimensions : capacity building, diversity, conservation, strategic distribution, and innovation. A quantitative methodology was applied, using a structured questionnaire distributed to faculty members across various faculties, resulting in 40 valid responses. Statistical analyses, including correlation and regression, indicated significant positive relationships between all sustainable leadership dimensions and organizational learning.

Sustainability, Human Well-Being, and the Future of Education

Explores the key dimensions of a future education system designed to enable individuals, schools, and communities to achieve the twin twenty-first century challenges of sustainability and human well-being. For much of the twentieth century, Western education systems prepared students to enter the workforce, contribute to society and succeed in relatively predictable contexts. Today, people are at the controls of the planet—making decisions that are dramatically reshaping social, economic, and environmental systems at a global scale. The chapter authors explore various aspects of learning and education system design through the lenses of sustainability and human well-being to evaluate how our understanding and practice of education must transform.

Sustainability in Manufacturing : Recovery of Resources in Product and Material Cycles

New processes in remanufacturing as cleaning by laser and prototypical realizations of disassembly systems for different products e.g. washing machines, mobile phones or car engines are presented. The paradigm change in manufacturing from how to produce products most efficiently into how to avoid producing products while still maintaining customer satisfaction and corporate profits is addressed. Teaching and learning in a global university environment are identified as powerful means to overcome the barriers of established thinking habits in societal institutions thus coping with the challenge of sustainability.

Surgical Scene Generation for Virtual Reality-Based Training in Medicine

One of the most important elements needed for effective training in Virtual Reality (VR) is the generation of variable scenarios. Without this, trainees quickly become familiar with a scene and the natural variations encountered in real-life situations cannot be reproduced. Generating such models in VR-based applications is difficult, but with the increase in computational power (allowing for larger and more finely-detailed virtual environments) there is an increasing demand for improved methods for model acquisition, enhancement, optimization and adaptation.

Successful Science and Engineering Teaching : Theoretical and Learning Perspectives

Describes how a professor can provide a learning environment that assists students to come to grips with the nature of science and engineering, to understand science and engineering concepts, and to solve problems in science and engineering courses. As such, this book is intended to be useful for any science or engineering professor, who wants to change their course to include more effective teaching methods, to instructors at post-secondary institutions, who are beginning their careers, and as a handbook for TA’s. Since the book is based upon articles that I have had published in Science Educational Research and which are grounded in educational research that I have performed (both quantitative and qualitative) over many years, it will also be of interest to anyone engaged in research into teaching science and engineering at the post-secondary level.

Subsidiarity and Economic Reform in Europe

Subsidiarity in the European Union, as the guiding principle of decision-making "close to the people", is often motivated and discussed from a predominantly political perspective. In this book, twenty-five renowned economic researchers and policy experts draw the demarcation between national and European policies from an economic viewpoint. Insights from economic theory and empirical research are used both to analyse the assignment of policies between the EU and its Member States and to identify appropriate levels of decision-making. Four key areas of the renewed Lisbon strategy are highlighted for their policy relevance: education and innovation, the internal market, corporate taxation, and regional and transport policy.

Studies on Continuing Vocational Training in Germany : An Empirical Assessment

Offers a comprehensive empirical analysis of continuing vocational training in Germany. Specific issues concerning continuing training that are debated in academia as well as in public are discussed. Wage and productivity effects of training are analysed, explicitly accounting for the heterogeneity of training participants. Additionally, different types of training that vary in the degree of firm specificity are considered. Wage and productivity effects of training are compared to examine how the training rent is shared between employer and employee. Finally, evidence is given on whether positive externalities of continuing training exist.
