Urological Emergencies in Clinical Practice
A user-friendly pocketbook, this is easy to refer to in an emergency situation. Each chapter is clearly marked, separated and organized into sections with heading of Signs, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Management placed in a numbered fashion similar to an objective structured clinical examination. Some sections also have useful hints and tips. Covering the basics of treatment rather than going into depth, these small but very important aspects of care are usually not mentioned in "big" reference textbooks, yet form an important aspect in everyday life.
Urban Transportation Planning in the United States : History, Policy, and Practice
The book focuses in-depth at the most significant event in transportation planning--the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1962; creating a federal mandate for a comprehensive urban transportation planning process carried out cooperatively by states and local governments with federal funding, this act was crucial in the spread of urban transportation. Claiming that urban transportation planning is more sophisticated, costly, and complex than its highway and transit planning predecessors, the book demonstrates how urban transportation planning evolved in response to changes in such factors as environment, energy, development patterns, intergovernmental coordination, and federal transit programs. It further illustrates how broader concerns for global climate change and sustainable development have braided the purview of transportation planning. This fully updated, revised, and expanded edition highlights the dynamics of transportation planning post-9/11, covers the impact of recent legislation, emphasizes such timely issues as security, oil dependence, performance measurement, and public-private sector collaboration.
Urban schools : Designing for high density
When space is tight how can a city provide the best education experience for children? Is a multi-storey school really a poor option? Can high-quality play opportunities be provided without playgrounds? This book explores the design of schools in urban settings, the increased challenges in meeting the typical expectations of school design, and what the successful new typology of a school in a city might be. A practical guide as well as a theoretical exploration of ideas, this book outlines successful international contemporary and historical case studies, providing much-needed guidance for architects and others working in education design in dense urban environments
Urban Modernity in the Contemporary Gulf : Obsolescence and Opportunities
Offers a timely and engaging discussion on architectural production in the modernization era in the Arabian Peninsula. Focusing on the 20th century as a starting point, the book explores the display of transnational architectural practices resulting in different notions of locality, cosmopolitanism, and modernity. Contextually, with an eye on the present, the book reflects on the initiatives that recently re-engaged with the once ville moderne which, meanwhile, lost its pivotal function and meaning. A city within a bigger city, the urban fabric produced during the modernization era has the potential to narrate the social growth, East–West dynamics, and citizens’ memories of the recent past.

Written by an international group of contributors, all experts in their field, to provide a text for specialists and trainees, this book gives a current and concise summary of all key topics within the specialty and concentrates on recent developments.
Upon What Does the Turtle Stand? : Rethinking Education for the Digital Age
Brings together the reflections of independent researchers from around the world. Sixteen authors from fourteen countries present their views on the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in education, offering valuable insights through the examination of current issues relevant to the future of education. What will education be in tomorrow’s world? How can ICT be used without rendering education a purely technical process? How can we succeed the renovation of educational subjects without transforming them into technical objects? The introductory chapter of this publication guides us into the essays through a classification organized by the editors to illustrate different attitudes to technologies: The ‘Globalizers’ see the integration of ICT and education as a means of enhancing the competitiveness of their society in a global economy / The ‘Reformists’ see it as a means of bringing about significant change in didactics in the various disciplines, and even in the ‘basics’ of education / The ‘Humanists’ consider technologies as possible catalysts for changing the aims and values of education from learni- oriented to humanistic
Unsaturated Soils : Numerical and Theoretical Approaches ; Proceedings of the International Conference "From Experimental Evidence towards Numerical Modeling of Unsaturated Soils", Weimar, Germany, September 18-19, 2003
Includes the Proceedings of the International Conference ISSMGE uniting researchers and practitioners in geotechnical engineering on a single platform and discussing the problems associated with unsaturated soils. The objectives of the International Conference were: (a) to promote unsaturated soil mechanics for practical application, (b) to exchange experiences in experimental unsaturated soil mechanics and numerical modelling, (c) to discuss application of unsaturated soil mechanics to a variety of problems. The conference was additionally a status report in the frame of the DFG research group "Mechanics of Unsaturated Soils".

University and school collaborations during a pandemic : Sustaining educational opportunity and reinventing education
Based on twenty case studies of universities worldwide, and on a survey administered to leaders in 101 universities, this open access book shows that, amidst the significant challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, universities found ways to engage with schools to support them in sustaining educational opportunity. In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate.
Universality of Nonclassical Nonlinearity : Applications to Non-Destructive Evaluations and Ultrasonics
Comes as a result of the research work developed in the framework of two international projects: the European Science Foundation supported program NATEMIS (Nonlinear Acoustic Techniques for Micro-Scale Damage Diagnostics) and a Los Alamos-based international network. The main topics of both the programs and the book cover the phenomenology, theory and applications of Nonclassical Nonlinearity (NCNL). NCNL techniques have been found in recent years to be extremely powerful (up to 1000 times more than the corresponding linear techniques) in a wide range of applications, including Material Characterization, Ultrasonics, Geophysics and Maintenance and Restoration of artifacts. These techniques are being adopted as the main inspection and research tool in another European program: AERONEWS (Health monitoring of aircraft by nonlinear elastic wave propagation).

United Nations Peace Operations in a Changing Global Order
This volume explores how UN peace operations are adapting to four trends in the changing global order: the rebalancing of relations between states of the global North and the global South; the rise of regional organisations as providers of peace; the rise of violent extremism and fundamentalist non-state actors; and increasing demands from non-state actors for greater emphasis on human security. It identifies emerging conflict and peace trends (robustness of responses, rise of non-state threats, cross-state conflicts) and puts them in the context of tectonic shifts in the global order (rise of emerging powers, North–South rebalancing, emergence of regional organisations as providers of peace). The volume stimulates a discussion between practitioners and academics, offering an analysis of how the international community collectively makes sense of the changing global order and its implications for UN peace operations.
Unique Environmentalism : A Comparative Perspective
This book explains and demonstrates how the Norwegian case of environmentalism is unique. The two connected anomalies of an inclusive and state friendly society and a strong orientation and commitment to local communities make the case stand apart from mainstream international definitions of environmentalism. The authors study a specific political culture with a rather unique combination of state structure and civil society of which organized environmentalism is an important part. The political culture influences organizational form and organizational ideology as well as the way these organistions are linked to and interact with the goverment.
