Violence in Europe : Historical and Contemporary Perspectives
Taking the sociocultural long view, Violence in Europe analyzes the prevalence and role of violence—from street crime to terrorist attacks, homicide to genocide—in the evolution of human and national behavior. The editors and 14 colleagues in history, anthropology, sociology, and psychology focus on Northern and Western Europe, examining centuries of violent phenomena, from the cultural logic of the Middle Ages to today’s soccer riots and security alerts. The contributors’ examination of social constructions (honor codes, class and gender roles) and public ambivalence (acceptance, abhorrence, fascination) regarding violence sheds needed light on current dynamics in law enforcement, political systems, and what many have termed "the civilization of violence."

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Cryptographers’ Track at the RSA Conference 2006,held in San Jose, CA, USA, February 13-17, 2005. The RSA R Conference, with over 15,000attendees, as well as over 225 sponsors and exhibitors, is the largest computer security event of the year. The Cr- tographers’ Track is one of the many parallel tracks. These proceedings contain the papers presented during the sixth edition. The tradition indeed started in 2001, and is by now well established: the Cryptographers’ Track at the RSA Conference is among the major events in cryptography. There were 72 submitted contributions, of which 22 were selected for p- sentation. They cover all aspects of cryptography (symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, constructions and attacks, new trends).

Thermo-Dynamics of Plates and Shells
This monograph is devoted to the investigation of nonlinear dynamics of plates and shells embedded in a temperature field. Numerical approaches and rigorous mathematical proofs of solution existence in certain classes of differential equations with various dimensions are applied. Both closed shell-type constructions and sectorial shells are studied. The considered problems are approximated by 2D and 3D constructions taking into account various types of nonlinearities (geometrical and/or physical with coupled deformation and temperature fields), and are subjected to an action of stationary and non-stationary thermal loads.

Remnant Raising and Vso Clausal Architecture : A Case Study of San Lucas Quiavini Zapotec
San Lucas Quiaviní Zapotec, an endangered and little-examined indigenous language of Mexico, shows a range of syntactic and morphological phenomena incompatible with standard Minimalist accounts of verb movement: verbs and clearly phrasal constituents behave identically in a number of syntactic constructions, and the ordering of verbal morphemes is problematic for standard assumptions of verbal head movement.This work proposes a VP-remnant raising account for these phenomena, motivated by Kayne’s (1992) Antisymmetry program. This work also examines consequences of phrasal remnant movement for negation constructions, question formation; and the interpretation of tense, aspect, and mood.

Placing the Public in Public Health in Post-War Britain, 1948–2012
Explores the question of who or what ‘the public’ is within ‘public health’ in post-war Britain. Drawing on historical research on the place of the public in public health in Britain from the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948, the book presents a new perspective on the relationship between state and citizen. Focusing on health education, health surveys, heart disease and the development of vaccination policy and practice, the book establishes that ‘the public’ was not one thing but many. It considers how public health policy makers and practitioners imagined the public or publics. These publics were not mere constructions; they had agency and the ability to ‘speak back’ to public health. The nature of publicness changed during the latter half of the twentieth century, and this book argues that the relationship between the public and public health offers a powerful lens through which to examine such shifts.
