Within the scientific and informative activities carried out by the Faculty of Architecture at the Arab International University, on Sunday 3/7/2021, a scientific visit was held for the students of the Landscape Course and Coordination of Landscape sites from the university's headquarters in Ghabagheb, in coordination with the Deanship of the College, the University Presidency and the Student Body, and Under the supervision of the work team: Dr. Arwa Sharafuddin, m. Maria Awad, M. Lina Eid, who was accompanied by 85 students.
The route of the visit included the longitudinal space connecting Bab Touma and Bab al-Salam along the Barada River on one side and the northeastern Damascus wall on the other side, including four proposed stops for treatment, starting from Bab Touma Square as a first treatment area and the park opposite the Soufaniah as a second treatment area, then continued eastward towards The Fariis (attributed to historical tanneries for furs and fabrics according to the sources) and to identify the path between the wall and the river, which reaches to 300 m, and the relationship of the void with the discarded homes, workshops and warehouses that formed the third stopping point, up to the fourth stopping point, which is the Bab al-Salam mill yard which is occupied by car garages and timber workshops. The river has a width of 20 meters and emphasizes the importance of redesigning a section in the space with its relationship with the river and a historical building such as the mill, one of its seven main gates.
The tour ended at Bab Al-Salam, directing the students to rethink the location of the region and its potential as an urban, environmental and cultural space on the borders of the old city and between the two branches of Barada.
