The Latin American Theoretical INformatics Symposium (LATIN) is becoming a traditional and high-quality conference on the Theory of Computing. Previous conferences havebeen organized twiceinBrazil: SaoPaulo (1992) and Campinas (1998); twice in Chile: Valpara so (1995) and Valdivia (2006); once in Uruguay: Punta del Este (2000); once in Mexico: Cancun (2002); and once in Argentina: Buenos Aires (2004). This volume contains the proceedings of the 8th Latin American Theore- cal INformatics Symposium (LATIN 2008), which was held in Buzio s, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, April 7 11, 2008.
Laser additive manufacturing: design, materials, processes and applications
Laser-based additive manufacturing (LAM) is a revolutionary advanced digital manufacturing technology developed in recent decades, which is also a key strategic technology for technological innovation and industrial sustainability. This technology unlocks the design and constraints of traditional manufacturing and meets the needs of complex geometry fabrication and high-performance part fabrication. A deeper understanding of the design, materials, processes, structures, properties and applications is desired to produce novel functional devices, as well as defect-free structurally sound and reliable LAM parts.The topics in this Special Issue reprint include macro- and micro-scale additive manufacturing with lasers, such as structure/material design, fabrication, modeling and simulation, in situ characterization of additive manufacturing processes and ex situ materials characterization and performance, with an overview that covers various applications in aerospace, biomedicine, optics and energy.

The 6th International Conference on Large-Scale Scienti?c Computations (LSSC 2007) was held in Sozopol, Bulgaria, June 5–9, 2007. The conference was organized by the Institute for Parallel Processing at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in cooperation with SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Ma- ematics). Partial support was also provided from project BIS-21++ funded by the European Commission in FP6 INCO via grant 016639/2005. The conference was devoted to the 60th anniversary of Richard E. Professor Ewing is internati- ally well known with his contributions in applied mathematics, mathematical modeling, and large-scale scientific computations.

The 5th International Conference on Large-Scale Scientific Computations (LSSC 2005) was held in Sozopol, Bulgaria, June 6–10, 2003. The conference was organized and sponsored by the Institute for Parallel Processing at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Partial support was also provided from project BIS-21++ funded by the European Commission in FP6 INCO via grant 016639/2005. More than 120 participants from all over the world attended the conference representing some of the strongest research groups in the field of advanced largescale scientific computing. This volume contains 80 papers submitted by authors from over 20 countries. The 6th International Conference, LSSC 2007, will be organized in June 2007

The 21stCentury COE program “Framework for Systematization and Application of Large-scale Knowledge - sources (COE-LKR)” conducted by the Tokyo Institute of Technology is one of several early attempts worldwide to address these important issues. Inspired by this project, LKR2008 aimed at bringing together diverse contributions in cognitive science, computer science, education and linguistics to explore design, construction, extension, maintenance, validation and application of knowledge.

Presents the proceedings of the 17 IFIP/IEEE International Workshop on Distributed Systems : Operations and Management (DSOM 2006), which was held rd th in Dublin, Ireland during October 23 to 25 , 2006. In line with its reputation as one of the pre-eminent fora for the discussion and debate of advances of distributed systems management, the 2006 iteration of DSOM brought together an international audience of researchers and practitioners from both industry and academia. th DSOM 2006 was the 17 in a series of annual workshops, and it followed the footsteps of highly successful previous meetings, the most recent of which were held in Barcelona, Spain (DSOM 2005), Davis, USA (DSOM 2004), Heidelberg, Germany (DSOM 2003), Montreal, Canada (DSOM 2002) and Nancy, France (DSOM 2001). The goal of the DSOM workshops is to bring together researchers in the areas of networks, systems and services management, from both industry and academia, to discuss recent advances and foster future growth in these ?elds. In contrast to the larger management symposia, such as Integrated Management (IM) and Network Operations and Management (NOMS), the DSOM workshops are organised as sing- track programmes in order to stimulate interaction among participants.
Languages and Compilers for High Performance Computing ; 17th International Workshop, LCPC 2004, West Lafayette, IN, USA, September 22-24, 2004, Revised Selected Papers
Cetus is a compiler infrastructure for the source-to-source transformation of programs. Since its creation nearly three years ago, it has grown to over 12,000 lines of Java code, been made available publically on the web, and become a basis for several research projects. We discuss our experience using Cetus for a selection of these research projects. The focus of this paper is not the projects themselves, but rather how Cetus made these projects possible, how the needs of these projects influenced the development of Cetus, and the solutions we applied to problems we encountered with the infrastructure. We believe the research community can benefit from such a discussion, as shown by the strong interest in the mini-workshop on compiler research infrastructures where some of this information was first presented.

In 2000 the conference moved out of Australia to be held in Brighton, UK; in 2001 it was in Osaka, Japan; in 2002, Crema near Milan, Italy; in 2003, Oxford, UK; in 2004, Wellington, New Zealand; and in 2005, Melbourne, Australia. The next two conferences are planned to be in Italy and Croatia. Delegate numbers have grown from about 100 in 1997, to a regular figure in excess of 500. The conference attracts delegates from many different countries, in Europe, Australasia, the Pacific Rim, Asia and the Americas, and may truly be said to be ‘International’.
