Dr. Maher AlKoutayni
Associate Professor and researcher in Clinical Biochemistry, holding a Doctorate of State in Pharmaceutical Sciences specializing in "Metabolic Biochemistry" from the University of Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France; a Third Cycle Doctorate (PhD) in Biochemistry; a Master's degree in Biology and Toxicology; and a Specialization Certificate in Clinical Biochemistry (CES) from the same university, after obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy from the University of Damascus.
With over four decades of academic and research experience, he has held several leadership positions at the Arab International University, including Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, and Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology. He is currently the Head of the Department of Basic and Support Sciences and a member of the University Discipline Committee.
He has extensive experience in medical laboratory management, having directed a private medical laboratory in Damascus for more than 35 years. He has also lectured at the University of Damascus and for international organizations such as UNRWA, and provided consulting services to several Syrian pharmaceutical laboratories. His research interests include mitochondrial membrane proteins, clinical biomarkers, nutritional deficiency diseases, and parasitic diseases.
On the research front, he has published numerous scientific studies in local and international journals, covering diverse topics such as mitochondrial membrane proteins, quality control in Syrian clinical laboratories, a comparative study of laboratory reagents in the Syrian market, detection of toxoplasmosis among female students, latent iron deficiency in women, and recent research linking alkaline phosphatase and vitamin D. He has also contributed to the Encyclopedia Arabica by writing specialized scientific articles on enzymes, messenger RNA, and genetic markers, as well as topics in the Arab Encyclopedia of Science and Technology.
