The species of intestinal parasites and their prevalence in children of elementary educational level in rural of Tartos-Syria

381 stool samples were collected from children in elementary educational level in rural of Tartos - Syria, and were examined .That was done in February of 2011. The aim of this study is to find out the species of intestinal parasites spread in this area. We found that 120 samples contain parasite, which equals to 31.62%. And 27 samples contain human pathogenic parasite (22.50%). The pathogenic parasites, according to their prevalence percentage, were: Giardia lamblia 5.24%, Chilomastix mesnili 0.52, Enterobius vermicularis 1.31%. While the nonpathogenic parasite samples were 93 (77.50%). The prevalence of these parasites, according to their species, was as follows: Blastocystis hominis 21.78%, Entamoeba coli 2.09%, Iodamoeba butschilii 0.52%. It is worthy to mention that no case of Ascaris lumbricoides and Entamoeba histolytica has been diagnosed in our study.
