Dr. Maher AlKoutayni
He is an Associate Professor and researcher in Clinical Biochemistry, holding a Doctorate of State in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a specialization in “Metabolic Biochemistry” from University of Strasbourg (formerly Louis Pasteur University, Strasbourg – France). He also earned a third-cycle PhD in Biochemistry and a master’s degree in Biology and Toxicology from the same university, following his bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from University of Damascus.
With more than four decades of academic and research experience, he has held several leadership positions at Arab International University, including Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Vice Dean for Scientific Affairs, and Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology. He currently serves as Head of the Department of Basic and Supporting Sciences and as a member of the University Council.
He also possesses extensive experience in medical laboratory management, having directed a private medical laboratory in Damascus for more than 35 years. In addition, he worked as a lecturer at the University of Damascus and with international organizations such as United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). He has also provided consultancy services to several Syrian pharmaceutical manufacturers. His research interests include mitochondrial membrane proteins, clinical biomarkers, nutritional deficiency disorders, and parasitic diseases.
On the research front, he has published numerous scientific studies in both local and international journals, covering diverse topics ranging from mitochondrial membrane proteins to the quality of clinical laboratories in Syria, the detection of toxoplasmosis among female students, latent iron deficiency in women, and more recent studies investigating the relationship between alkaline phosphatase and vitamin D. He also contributed to the Arab Encyclopedia by authoring specialized scientific articles on enzymes, messenger RNA, and genetic markers, as well as topics featured in the Arab Encyclopedia for Science and Technology.
