Prof. Dr. Mhd Firas Al Hinnawi

He is one of the most prominent specialists in Biomedical Engineering in Syria who has built an academic and professional career spanning over three decades at Damascus University and private Syrian universities. He began his scientific journey in Damascus where he obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering – Mechanical Power from Damascus University then pursued his postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom where he earned a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow to return afterwards and contribute to the establishment and development of this specialization at the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Over the years he taught courses in medical equipment medical safety and telemedicine techniques and supervised dozens of Master’s and Doctoral theses while serving as a jury member for postgraduate defenses in the faculties of Engineering Medicine and Dentistry and played a pivotal role in developing curricula and scientific research in the department. He held several leadership positions including Head of the Biomedical Engineering Department Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and Vice President of Damascus University for Scientific Research and Postgraduate Studies for four years during which he raised the university's ranking by developing and supporting scientific research before assuming the position of Vice President of the Arab International University for Scientific Affairs. Alongside his academic work he possesses extensive experience in engineering studies for hospitals and medical centers inside and outside Syria where he participated in designing and auditing dozens of projects in Syria Lebanon Saudi Arabia and the UAE making him a reference in the fields of medical equipment and high-performance hospital design. He has published a large number of scientific papers in international peer-reviewed and indexed journals with a research career spanning and diversifying between biomedical engineering sterilization telemedicine nanotechnology and artificial intelligence and he contributed to co-authoring the Medical Equipment textbook for fourth-year biomedical engineering students as well as translating and reviewing specialized books in biomedical engineering. In addition to his role in establishing a 3D printing laboratory for prosthetic limbs he founded the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering exhibition for graduation projects and established the International Conference on Biomedical Engineering for several successful sessions. Dr. Al-Hannawi is also known for his specialized lectures and seminars inside and outside Syria particularly on topics of hospital design infection control and modern medical equipment which made him an influential figure in both academic and professional circles.
