Dr. Affef Rahmeh
Professor at the Faculty of Civil Engineering – Arab International University
A professor in Structural Engineering and Soil Mechanics, he boasts an academic and professional career spanning over four decades in civil engineering, scientific research, and university education. He earned a Ph.D. and a Diploma of Advanced Studies (Diplôme d'Études Approfondies) in Structural and Soil Mechanics from École Centrale Paris, along with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Damascus University. He is one of the leading researchers specializing in granular media behavior, numerical modeling, material plasticity, and the development of concrete mixtures.
He has held several prestigious academic positions, most notably as a professor in the Department of Structural Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Damascus University (1995–2023), and as a professor at the Arab International University since 2023, in addition to serving as a faculty member at Amman Arab University between 2015 and 2019. He has taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses, including: Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Structural Engineering, Concrete Technology, Theory of Elasticity and Plasticity, Structural Dynamics, and Seismic Engineering.
He has supervised numerous Master's and Ph.D. theses, and his research has focused on pioneering topics such as enhancing concrete properties using recycled materials (like steel fibers from damaged tires and ground glass), and the mathematical modeling of granular material behavior under high stresses. He has a substantial number of research papers published in renowned peer-reviewed journals in both Arabic and English and serves as a scientific reviewer for international journals such as ACI (American Concrete Institute). His name is associated with several global research identifiers, most notably Google Scholar, ORCID, ResearchGate, and ScholarGPS. He has actively participated in dozens of international conferences and seminars in France, Europe, and the Arab world.
He possesses extensive professional experience as a consulting and peer-review engineer in structural engineering and soil mechanics with the Syrian Engineers Syndicate and has collaborated with several national companies in preparing studies, designing, and executing structural projects.
