Abstract

Public spaces play a vital role in the urban fabric of a nation and the social life of its society. A role that is much needed in countries passing through political, economic, and social transitions such as Egypt. This role coupled with a growing demand for more public spaces, where people can feel a sense of ownership and belonging, necessitates the search for new places that can provide opportunities for social gathering and interaction. The main aim of this paper is to explore the role that hybrid cultural spaces can play in this; and, to identify essential design elements that would enhance social interaction, and place attachment for users. The methodology used involves case study analysis and a survey questionnaire. These will investigate how hybrid cultural spaces in Cairo can provide social and spatial attachment opportunities, and will examine how Egyptians perceive these spaces. Findings show that attachment is based on both physical as well as social qualities of the space, along with the ability to provide a unique sense of place and experience. Thus, users will formulate a sense of attachment to cultural spaces that meet their needs both socially and functionally.
