Understanding the Bigger Energy Picture : DESERTEC and Beyond
This book gives an overview of today’s energy problem in the context of a rising world population, climate change and the shortage of resources. It figures out systemic connections between energy, water and the carbon cycle of today’s economy and sketches a “natural”future energy scenario that is sustainable. Due to the complexity of the matter, this short book cannot be a complete compendium. The proposed solutions and no-goes are meant as a stimulus for further discussion.
Tooling
The latest instalment in the renowned Pamphlet Architecture series features the technologically progressive young firm Aranda/Lasch, illustrating their use of advanced computational methods and algorithmic code in architectural design. Tooling is broken down into seven sections: blending, cracking, flocking, losing, packing, spiralling, and weaving, each corresponding to a pattern generated by computer codes, which in turn creates an organizational template for putting projects together - from building materials to large-scale populations. Graphical queries for the purpose of searching for pictorial information are of growing interest in areas where pictures provide valuable information, including, for instance, design, architecture, and engineering. Sketching graphical queries is a natural way of revealing the visual appearance of objects one has in mind. Björn Gottfried develops computationally effective concepts for dealing with shape, in particular imprecise and incomplete sketched shapes.
