Modern cryptography ; Vol.1 : A classical introduction to informational and mathematical principle

This book systematically explores the statistical characteristics of cryptographic systems, the computational complexity theory of cryptographic algorithms and the mathematical principles behind various encryption and decryption algorithms. The theory stems from technology. Based on Shannon's information theory, this book systematically introduces the information theory, statistical characteristics and computational complexity theory of public key cryptography, focusing on the three main algorithms of public key cryptography, RSA, discrete logarithm and elliptic curve cryptosystem.

Information and self-organization : A macroscopic approach to complex systems

This book presents the concepts needed to deal with self-organizing complex systems from a unifying point of view that uses macroscopic data. The various meanings of the concept "information" are discussed and a general formulation of the maximum information (entropy) principle is used. With the aid of results from synergetics, adequate objective constraints for a large class of self-organizing systems are formulated and examples are given from physics, life and computer science. The relationship to chaos theory is examined and it is further shown that, based on possibly scarce and noisy data, unbiased guesses about processes of complex systems can be made and the underlying deterministic and random forces determined. This allows for probabilistic predictions of processes, with applications to numerous fields in science, technology, medicine and economics. The extensions of the third edition are essentially devoted to an introduction to the meaning of information in the quantum context. Indeed, quantum information science and technology is presently one of the most active fields of research at the interface of physics, technology and information sciences and has already established itself as one of the major future technologies for processing and communicating information on any scale.

Information and Complexity in Statistical Modeling

The main theme in this book is to teach modeling based on the principle that the objective is to extract the information from data that can be learned with suggested classes of probability models. The intuitive and fundamental concepts of complexity, learnable information, and noise are formalized, which provides a firm information theoretic foundation for statistical modeling.

Codes et turbocodes = Codes and turbo codes

Devoted to one of the essential functions of modern telecommunications systems: channel coding, or error-correcting coding. At the crossroads of information theory, mathematics, and electronics, channel coding has undergone numerous developments since the foundational work of Claude Shannon. Algebraic codes, convolutional codes, and concatenated codes decoded iteratively form the core of the book, which also includes a presentation of digital modulations, to which channel coding is closely linked, forming the heart of the physical layer of telecommunications systems. The most important theoretical aspects are presented, and the construction of the codes is detailed and justified. Decoding algorithms are developed and, where possible, accompanied by simulation results that demonstrate their error-correcting capabilities and applications.

List decoding of error-correcting codes : Winning thesis of the 2002 ACM doctoral dissertation competition

Presents some spectacular new results in the area of decoding algorithms for error-correcting codes. Specifically, it shows how the notion of “list-decoding” can be applied to recover from far more errors, for a wide variety of err- correcting codes, than achievable before. A brief bit of background : error-correcting codes are combinatorial str- tures that show how to represent (or “encode”) information so that it is - silient to a moderate number of errors. Speci?cally, an error-correcting code takes a short binary string, called the message, and shows how to transform it into a longer binary string, called the codeword, so that if a small number of bits of the codewordare ?ipped, the resulting string does not look like any other codeword. The maximum number of errorsthat the code is guaranteed to detect, denoted d, is a central parameter in its design. A basic property of such a code is that if the number of errors that occur is known to be smaller than d/2, the message is determined uniquely. This poses a computational problem, called the decoding problem : compute the message from a corrupted codeword, when the number of errors is less than d/2.
