Yeast as tool in cancer research

The collection of articles in this volume explores the use of yeast in pathway analysis and drug discovery. Using yeast in the study of drug targets and metabolism can help to make a science of what has been largely an empirical activity. A science of drug discovery would permit rigorous answers to important questions.

Vortices in the Magnetic Ginzburg-Landau Model

This text presents complete and mathematically rigorous versions of both results either already known by physicists or applied mathematicians, or entirely new. It begins by introducing mathematical tools such as the vortex balls construction and Jacobian estimates. Among the applications presented are: the determination of the vortex densities and vortex locations for energy minimizers in a wide range of regimes of applied fields, the precise expansion of the so-called first critical field in a bounded domain, the existence of branches of solutions with given numbers of vortices, and the derivation of a criticality condition for vortex densities of non-minimizing solutions. Thus, this book retraces in an almost entirely self-contained way many results that are scattered in series of articles, while containing a number of previously unpublished results as well.

Virtual Colonoscopy : A Practical Guide

Virtual colonoscopy, or CT colonography, is a novel and rapidly evolving technique for the detection of tumoral lesions in the colon. It promises to be of great value as a screening tool for both colorectal cancer and its adenomatous precursor. Virtual colonoscopy requires rigorous preparation, colonic distension, and optimization of scanning parameters. Dedicated reading, analysis, and reporting of the data sets are mandatory. With contributions from several leaders in the field, this book addresses all the important issues relating to virtual colonoscopy. There is a particular focus on practical aspects: how to start virtual colonoscopy in your department, the regular preparation, the importance of fecal tagging, how to reduce the preparation, how to obtain optimal colonic distension, and the correct scanning parameters. Imaging characteristics and pitfalls are considered in detail, with an extensive pictorial review of difficult lesions, and the importance of computer-aided diagnosis is discussed.

Variational and Potential Methods for a Class of Linear Hyperbolic Evolutionary Processes

The book presents variational methods combined with boundary integral equation techniques in application to a model of dynamic bending of plates with transverse shear deformation. The emphasis is on the rigorous mathematical investigation of the model, which covers a complete study of the well-posedness of a number of initial-boundary value problems, their reduction to time-dependent boundary integral equations by means of suitable potential representations, and the solution of the latter in Sobolev spaces.

Valuing Agroforestry Systems : Methods and Applications

Offers practical means for strengthening the economics and policy dimension of the agroforestry discipline. The applied economic methodologies encompass a wide variety of case studies including enterprise/farm budget models through Faustmann models, Policy Analysis Matrix, production function approach, risk assessment models, dynamic programming, linear programming, meta-modeling, contingent valuation, attribute-based choice experiments, econometric modeling, and institutional economic analysis. It is our belief that these methodologies help agroforestry students and professionals conduct rigorous assessment of economic and policy aspects of agroforestry systems and to produce less biased and more credible information. Furthermore, the economic and policy issues explored in the book – profitability, environmental benefits, risk reduction, household constraints, rural development, and institutional arrangements – are central to further agroforestry adoption in both tropical and temperate regions

Universities and Science in the Early Modern Period

The authors of this volume offer a fresh assessment of how this course of study affected generations of natural philosophers, from the Iberian Peninsula to Scandinavia, from Italy to Scotland, even as it was increasingly modified to accommodate the new science. The fresh evidence gathered here emphasizes just how rigorously science was pursued by academics, notwithstanding institutional constraints. Individually, each paper illustrates the nexus of complexities specific locales made on the reception and transmission of scientific ideas; collectively, the papers offer a comparative framework that should prove invaluable in our evaluating the profound changes undergone by early modern universities during the era of Scientific Revolution.

Understanding Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics : Foundations, Applications, Frontiers

Our time is characterized by an explosion of information and by an accel- ation of knowledge. A book cannot compete with the huge amount of data available on the Web. However, to assimilate all this information, it is n- essary to structure our knowledge in a useful conceptual framework. The purpose of the present work is to provide such a structure for students and researchers interested by the current state of the art of non-equilibrium th- modynamics. The main features of the book are a concise and critical pres- tation of the basic ideas, illustrated by a series of examples, selected not only for their pedagogical value but also for the perspectives o?ered by recent technological advances. This book is aimed at students and researchers in physics, chemistry, engineering, material sciences, and biology. We have been guided by two apparently antagonistic objectives: gener- ity and simplicity. To make the book accessible to a large audience of n- specialists, we have decided about a simpli?ed but rigorous presentation. Emphasis is put on the underlying physical background without sacri?cing mathematical rigour, the several formalisms being illustrated by a list of - amplesandproblems.

Topics in Hyposonic Flow Theory

Hyposonic fluid flows, characterized by a low Mach number, are mainly linked with geophysical and environmental fluid flows. In addition they are relevant to engineers because of their connection with aerodynamics. The book brings together insights derived from mathematically rigorous results and combines them with a number of realistic fluid flow situations. Asymptotic analytic solutions for the low-Mach number cases are developed to provide both insights into the underlying physics as well as benchmarks for numerical computations.

Topics in Applied Macrodynamic Theory

This book presents topics in applied dynamic macrotheory for closed and open economies. The authors give an advanced treatment of macroeconomic topics such as the Phillips curve, forward and backward looking behavior, open economy macrodynamics, structural macroeconometric model building as well as the empirics of Keynesian oriented macro models. They start from the closed economy and consider open economies for fixed and flexible exchange rate systems with free international capital flows later on. The dynamics of open economies in the context of interacting two country models are treated as well. The macrofounded approach extends and integrates non-market-clearing traditions in macrodynamics. It is compared to New Keynesian approaches which are generally rigorously microfounded, but often neglect to study macroeconomic feedback mechanisms (that may be stabilizing or destabilizing).

Thermo-Dynamics of Plates and Shells

This monograph is devoted to the investigation of nonlinear dynamics of plates and shells embedded in a temperature field. Numerical approaches and rigorous mathematical proofs of solution existence in certain classes of differential equations with various dimensions are applied. Both closed shell-type constructions and sectorial shells are studied. The considered problems are approximated by 2D and 3D constructions taking into account various types of nonlinearities (geometrical and/or physical with coupled deformation and temperature fields), and are subjected to an action of stationary and non-stationary thermal loads.

Theoretical Aspects of Computing - ICTAC 2005; Second International Colloquium, Hanoi, Vietnam, October 17-21, 2005, Proceedings

International Colloquium on Theoretical Aspects of Computing. ICTAC was founded by the International Institute for Software Technology of the United Nations University (UNU-IIST) to serve as a forum for practiti- ers, lecturers and researchers from academia, industry and government who are interested in theoretical aspects of computing and rigorous approaches to so- ware engineering. The colloquium is aimed particularly, but not exclusively, at participants from developing countries. We believe that this will help developing countries to strengthen their research, teaching and development in computer science and engineering, improve the links between developing countries and developed countries, and establish collaboration in research and education. By providing a venue for the discussion of common problems and their solutions, and for the exchangeof experiences and ideas, this colloquium supports research and development in computer science and software technology. ICTAC is attracting more and more attention from more and more countries.
